  1. Audio_ELF, Driver modules are built into the Linux kernel for the most part. The system is different than a windows system. The driver module is fine and is up to date. I think you may have misunderstood my post. I am not unsatisfied with my Realtek HD. I just wanted something better, so some of the guys on head-fi recommended an external dac as explained above. I got the Dac and noticed absolutely no difference between the onboard soundcard vs the $250 Dac. I tried both USB and Toslink, both sounded exactly the same to me. I am now looking for something else, which is why I am here.
  2. Thanks for getting back Chris. The unit being external does in fact limit EMI, which is great. Though I'm sure there are also $70 or cheaper units which do the same thing. The Onboard Realtel does suffer from EMI like I mentioned, but its only noticeable when nothing is playing. If there is an actual signal coming in it mostly goes away. I usually use Rhythmbox to play my music. When I select my device I choose Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output. I am using Alsa on the Realtek ALC888 chip. I even installed windows XP to test things out. Installed foobar, and Asio4ALL + foobar plugin. I really couldnt tell the difference between the Realtek Output vs the ASIO output. Also other than the small amounts of EMI from the onboard, I cant say I could hear the difference between Dac and the onboard.
  3. tl;dr: I bought a recommended external dac and am disapointed and need something new. Hello everybody, I am/was a member over on Head-fi and was recommended the Audio-GD Fun in their computer audio section. I hadn't heard of this resource before, but it was recommended to me by a kind member. Some folks there are very helpful and outgoing, while other's are flat out assholes. I was told the members here tend to have better advice centered on computer audio which is what I want. My Audigy 2 ZS died and all I wanted was something better than it and better than my onboard Realtek HD. The Realtek sounds better than the Audigy, but suffers from EMI hissing and stuff. So naturally I wanted something better. I first started to look at the X-Fi's as I have used creative before, but I mainly use Gnu/Linux and in my research the support is not all too great. I then moved onto the Azunetech's, but the same problem persisted. Then I moved my research into the Envy24 series like the Prodigy HD2, but that chipset was a bit old and I was unsure how it would sound for non pure audio. I then moved onto the Asus Xonar's which seemed to have decent Gnu/Linux support. I was ready to buy the Xonar STX when it was made clear to me that, no matter how good the internal pci/pci-e sound card they will all be subject to EMI, so an external Dac is the only real choice. A relative on mine bought the Ibasso D2 Boa for his Ipod and the difference was drastic. So I thought, these external Dac/Amp's must be semi decent, or else nobody would buy them. I ended up deciding on the Audio-GD Fun Basic. It seemed to meet all of my needs and didn't have any known hiss like the maverick tubemagic on low impedance cans (I use the Audio technica ATH-A700). I waited about 3 weeks for the unit and was pretty excited, surly because of its rave reviews on the site and other sites like VR-Zone. I got the unit, set it up via Toslink out on my motherboard Abit IP 35 Pro with Realtek HD. Plugged it in and started to listen. At first I thought it sounded good. The static that existed on the onboard was not there, but that was expected. Once I got past that, the sound quality really didn't differ all to much from my Realtek HD. I kept trying it and have let the unit burn in for around 2.5 days so far and the unit really sounds no better. I also get ear pain when I listen through it, I guess the treble is to high. I tried the soft setting but it really doesn't change much. Now it seems most repliers on head-fi except a few honorable ones are going back and saying External Dacs suck and going on about how I wanted my money while learning a life lesson. What should I do now. I still just want a music source that is better than what I currently have for listening to flac rips. I tend to be pragmatic, I don't see a reason to spend $200 on a sound card if it wont give 4x the listing experience of the $50 one. But I do like to get the most for my money. I mainly listen to flac rips, tv shows and the occasional movie. I don't play games. I use Audio Technica ATH-A700 headphones.
