  1. Thank you for your response. I did not connect to this thread by how I was searching so this will be very helpful. Thanks also for the recommendation for Acoustic Sounds and the Teac. I will check them out.
  2. Hi All, My current DAC is almost six years old and it is time for an upgrade. I want to get a DSD DAC. I am not sure how to get DSD content onto my music storage hard drive to play with my CAPS 2 computer. I have a basic Samsung external DVD/CD connected to the CAPS via USB and I am thinking this would not be sufficient to rip a DSD disk. The last post I saw discussing this was several years old. Any ideas? Thank you in advance for any suggestions. And....I had pretty much decided on the Mytek 192 DSD, but my Scottish blood wants to cheap out for some Schiit. Comments welcome here too. Duncan My System: CAPS 2+; Sever 2012 R2; Audiophile Optimizer 1.23; MF VDAC; Audio Research CD1; Alexandria Oracle vinyl forever!); Audio Research SP9 MIII preamp; Counterpoint NP100 amp; Golden Ear Trident 2 speakers; Nordost Blue Heaven cables & interconnects.
  3. Hi Optimist, Thank you for this feedback. The lack of HDMI in CAPS2 remains an issue without an easy solution for my needs. The MacMini is very nice indeed and even more tempting after your positive comments.
  4. Thank you, Kiwi, I am still considering all of my options. Duncan
  5. Hi Eloise, Thank you so much for your informative response. The netbook and VDAC actually sound surprisingly good. I want to make a change because the screen size of the Netbook is too small. Also there is no HDMI on the netbook and I want to also play HD movies. I have been a Windows user for many years and I really would prefer not to make a change. I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about upgrading my music server but did not get any feedback suggesting CAPS2. I have not been on CA much for the last two years and did not know that Chris had published these specs. This is what I would prefer to do. I forwarded the CAPS2 article to my local computer store and they will build something along these guidelines. My tech said that some of the items in the specs are outdated and I also want HD video so we will make some modifications. Building it myself is not something I would choose to do. Upgrading the V-DAC is something I will do in a few months. Thank you again for your advice. Best, Duncan
  6. Hi All, From my initial research it appears this can work but want to know if anyone has knowledge/experience with this. I would like to HDMI out to the HDTV and use it as the monitor and for HD video. Then use optical cable to send audio signal to the MF VDAC and preamp. Is there a better way to do this? i5 v i7 processor? Minimum RAM? BootCamp v Parallels Is there a clear advantage to one of these? Thunderbolt Will this still work effectively when either booting through BootCamp or in the virtual machine of Parallels? Filenames I have 600G of classical music. Almost 30% of the collection has filenames too long for Windows to import onto my hard drive – had to use Ubuntu. Does Mac OS have the same restrictions? As always, any input or coaching is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Duncan My System: Counterpoint NP100; Audio Research SP9 MIII; Audio Research CD1; Alexandria Oracle; Dell Netbook; MF VDAC; Nordost Blue Heaven cables & interconnects; Spica TC-50s, Kinergetic subs: very oldies, but very goodies.
  7. Hey Earthenware, not sure if you are still monitoring this thread. I checked out the Mac Mini and I am intrigued with how it might work with my system. I am planning to continue with JRMC17 through Windows 7, and I am wondering if this will work in the mini. Or is buying a Mac to run Windows just a really bad idea? If anyone else has input, please jump in. Thank you, Duncan
  8. Thank you so much for such a comprehensive response. Your points about the possible disadvantages of a gamer pc are well taken. I upgraded the power supply on one of my desktops and the fan noise has bothered me ever since - not excited about more noise or a light show. I will share your comments with the guy at the local computer store and consider what is available. I might also have them build something.
  9. Thank you for your response. I will look into it.
  10. Hi All, I have been using a Dell netbook as my music server with surprisingly good results, but the screen is way too small and there is no HDMI output so I will not be able to play a newly added video library. I am not a technophile so I definitely do not want to build anything myself - much prefer to get something directly from Dell or another manufacturer. I've been a PC guy since 1982 so really not interested in switching to Apple. Should I get a gamer level computer with i7, 8+megs of RAM, high-end video card, etc. ? Or do I need substantially less? What would be the optimal system configuration? Thank you in advance for any advice. Duncan

    Frustrated

I have been using J River off and on for about a year with mixed results. The music sounds great but I am constantly dealing with issues: I received an outstanding collection of classical music (about 500G) and when I tried to import many of the files didn't get into the library. The person that gave me the collection is German so the language may be an issue. He also had a very elaborate file structure. I was only able to play some of the titles and not others - not sure why. This lead to my using JR sporadically with long breaks. When I would go back and try to start using it again there would be an update and I would have to re-import my files -- some would play beautifully and some not at all. I just did this again over the weekend and updated to the latest version. Now I cannot play anything. I get the error message in the attachment. I tried a few things but was unable to resolve the issue. The lack of a written manual makes it more difficult (for me) to solve these problems. Any advice would be greatly appreciateed. Thank you, Duncan
  13. Hi Chris, Thank you for responding so quickly. After posting I was shaving and the light went on. I logged in directly to the mini server and everything was fine. The controlling computer was is in fact defaulting to its own very limited sound. I just logged back to the forum to remove my post when I saw your response. You were right - it was an easy one. Are you recommending MC15 yet? Should I go back to 14? Thank you again so much. Duncan
  14. I recently purchased a Dell mini to function as my music server. It came with Windows 7 Starter which I originally configured according to Chris's recommendation in the Medica Center 14 article. I followed all of the screen shots in the article when configuring Windows and Media Center and everything worked well. I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional because I wanted to be able to use Remote Desktop. The more robust OS is working just fine in the mini. I also went back to J River and installed MC 15 because 14 was no longer available. When I went to configure Windows it no longer recognizes either the default Realtek controller or my USB DAC. I can see both in the device manager but not in the sound section of control panel. The only device is something called Remote Audio. All of the configuration tabs at the bottom are greyed out. The properties tab is useless. I am not able to follow Chris' configuration recommendations because they are simply not available. I have attached a screen shot. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Duncan
