  1. Which media player will you be wanting to use for playback eventually? If it is—as you mentioned—Windows Media Player then I would go ahead and use that to rip to your CDs to WMP Lossless. I recently tested WMP rips and found that the files were identical to files created by EAC and verified by AccurateRip database. If you later go on to use a Transporter—it sounds fantastic by the way—all three lossless file formats by it, so just use whichever interface you are most comfortable with.
  2. I'm borrowing an M Audio Transit. It's £50 and sounds really quite good. I'm impressed and recommend it.
  3. AIFF uses more hard drive space for zero sonic improvement. A lossless file will sound the same and take up about two thirds of the space, saving you money on hard drives.
  4. You could read up on Ethernet over mains products.
  5. You could look at Mac Mini too.
  6. Lossless is lossless. Ripping to AIFF is simply a waste of space and money. If you ever need to convert Apple Lossless in the future to something else it can be done easily with free software.
  7. It's nice to see the spec. updated but it's probably more than is required for a simple iTunes machine, like how many of us would use it.
  8. I heard some at Bristol. I forget the model. Very good though. I liked, and they fed them from Linn DS players.
  9. Chaps, I'm down the bottom, in the middle. Wimborne Minster is the closest town.
  10. Computer Audiophiles, This weekend a senior employee of a British audio company told me that he could hear differences between NAS drives. I'm sure this claim would be laughed at by IT professionals and engineers, but those in the subjective camp of audiophilia may give credence to it. With audio systems moving closer towards computer systems, will claims like these simply die out, or will the companies just become even more marginalised? Regards, Darren
  11. You could certainly wire up some actives in an AV system. Simply use the pre-outs from the receiver. I reckon it would be fantastic, especially if you had active all around!
  12. JC, My Firewire FreeAgent Pro seems to work fine again now after some software downloads, so I took the replacement back to the store for a refund. I do not have an Airport Extreme, but if I router breaks I'd consider one. Thanks
