  1. Sounds like a good plan. Your i7 machine can act as a NAS at the back end, and a (headless) NUC up front to connect to the DAC. You will want a wireless network so you can control playback remotely using a phone or tablet though? Just to clarify my post, the Haswell system as described by Chris would work fine. My comments were on the new Broadwell NUCs and are not necessarily show-stoppers. The fanless case may not be necessary for example.
  2. These are now on the market but three things holding me back: 1. No fanless cases available yet (plenty for haswell) 2. No SATA connectors, cannot add a second drive or that trick SOtM card 3. Uses a new generation SSD (mSATA replacement), not that widely available just yet in all capacities.
  3. Not sure if this has wifi capability out of the box. It's assumed you will be using a wired LAN. If you did want to switch between audio-optimised and General use mode, something like Fidelizer could be the way to go. Recently reviewed here Fidelizer Pro 6.5 | AudioStream I have used the freeware version with no problems and may pony up for the 'pro' version.
  4. Thanks for that, I was looking at the iFi iUSB but this Aqvox unit may be better value.
  5. Maroubra does not have a CD drive due to its tiny size but you could use a USB connected portable CD/DVD drive for ripping. That may not be a good idea however as ideally the music server does not have an Internet connection which you'd need for pulling down metadata for the disc in the drive. Likewise not a good choice for everyday computing, as for best sound you will disable firewall, windows update service and avoid using antivirus software. All a gamble if connected to the net.
  6. Tom, One of the good features of that DM2800 board is the onboard passively cooled CPU. Some of those other options you mention will require heat pipes or similar for passive cooling and a picoPSU if you want fanless power. Those NUC designs for CAPS v4 seem a better option to me, but the next generation NUCs are not far away . . . Last visited the Loire valley via bicycle in 1989, tres bon. Keep us posted on your build! Stuart
  7. Jamie, if you do wish to use the SOtM PCI card in a music server there are some newer mainboards which do support the old 'legacy' PCI cards. For example: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - CPU Onboard - GA-J1900N-D3V (rev. 1.x) Quad core Celeron, but only 10W with passively cooled CPU. Posts on the Jplay forum suggest other people have used this platform successfully as a music server. Given that it uses a standard ATX power connector, you could use that picoPSU of yours to power it, too.
  8. Chris, will you be posting any tips on tweaking Win 8 by disabling un-necessary services and suchlike? This was covered in some detail back with the CAPS v2 article, but that info was specifically for windows 7 and may no longer apply to the newer O/S. Thanks.
  9. OK, it hooks up direct to USB, where the previous SOtM cards used the PCI slot to connect to the mainboard. A clever little package, and it gets round one of the main drawbacks of the NUC platform which is the lack of expandability. I like.
  10. Knock us out with your NUC Chris.
  11. I am using the server without the SOtM card at present partly because the Streacom case I'm using now does not allow for a PCI card. This is an interim measure until I build a new server possibly with a Celeron J1900. Incidentally I also have the Intel main board Chris used in the CAPS v1 build and this has no problems booting with the card in the slot, powered from the boards 'internal' power. This indicates the card is not the problem. After reading reviews of renderers such as the Auralic Aries the idea of a server/NAS outside of music room feeding an optimised streaming device attached to the DAC appeals to me. Sorry, off topic there!
  12. Hi Jamie I also have a CAPS v2 with Jetway m-board which I'm still using, and this has exactly the same problem you describe. PC would not boot when the SOtM card was powered from the internal PC power. I'm told this is due to the Jetway boards inability to provide that initial surge of current that is needed to power all connected devices at boot. Solution: power the USB card with 12v from an external source. This can be the same power source that runs the PC split into two via a Y connector, though you'll want to disconnect power to the USB card when PC shuts down. And you will need a hole in the case to get the power in. Messy. I think CAPS v3 used a better choice of board! Hope that helps. Stuart
  13. Good question. I would expect that the main reason for having JRMC on the server in this context is for tag editing, as the Pipeline is really acting as the media server and the Cortez just hosts the music library. I expect Chris will elaborate more when he unveils the two NUC based servers he mentioned in the CAPS4 introductory article. These NUC options are what I'm interested in, as the two offerings so far are technological overkill to a simple problem in my humble opinion.
  14. I copied your 24-bit hi-rez example - worked a treat, now displaying in JRemote. Thanks for sharing this, Ted. Stuart
  15. Awaiting the new setups with interest. I'm happy with my CAPS V2 server (with linear PS) and skipped on V3, but four may be the lucky number. Like others here I am interested in Linux developments especially now that JRMC can run on this platform.
