  1. Brillant! Thanks Wam - sorted. I was using an old version of Audivarna. The new version is awesome. A great piece of software.
  2. Hi, hope this is a question more than a rant... Encouraged my sister to buy the Bluesound Vault2i coupled with audioengine HD6 speakers - she wanted simplicity and a CD ripper built in. First a bit of ranting; 1) the OS is ok but has the same 'can't find album artwork' limitations iTunes always had so there's lots of black squares in her new library. 2) does not show bitrate, file type/quality 3) the USB inputs are limited to memory sticks 4) external drives must be network connected so plopping files on to the vaults drive is almost as tedious as slipping CD's into its slot... 5) hi res .iso / SACD can't be played/imported. Q1 - best conversions software and file type? FLAC? 6) I can beam files via bluetooth direct to the HD6's (which are pretty awesome) or over the network to the vault. Q2 - which is better sound quality (higher bitrate/file size?) 7) Best hi rez streaming sites? 8) How can I get Audirvana to play nice with all these things? Audivarna does everything. I really need to move out of my sisters and get my own place... Thanks
  3. Thanks Jcn3, will check the Vault out. Throw in a couple of active wireless speakers and if the app controller is good I think this could be the solution. She's already electing me to do the ripping - a task I've done too many times for my own macmini 'system' ..😐
  4. Hi, My older sis wants a new system that will do pretty much what the NAIM Uniti star does but a little bit cheaper. She has a stack of CD;s she wants to rip in to this 'new system' and is pretty much a technophobe and doesn't want to deal with seperate bits. What are the options? Thanks
  5. You know those moments when you're humming a song in your head or out loud and go for the iremote thing and fire up your Hifi to listen. You haven't been feeling particularly awesome, may have been partying a little too hard, you're dopamine and serotonin supplies maybe depleted, you find yourself weeping at the odd 'Friends' rerun scene and glad you're all alone or perhaps hoping there really is camera's hidden everywhere in the black or silver or green electronic components so 'they' know you're really actually quite nice and normalish. You know valves sound better warm, you've read it a thousand times and your ears have proven this without a doubt but you always turn off that valve DAC thingy when you're not using it because you've got the other DAC for the cable TV and the less coloured lights the better. My word, I've left the valve DAC on for 2 days and whacked a song on and it was instant magic. I love electricity. Sent from my iPhone using Computer Audiophile
  6. Thank you John, Tried some combos as you suggested and a new USB cable. Working ! Now the freaky session of listening if it's making a difference ensues... Cheers, Nic
  7. Hello, Having problem with MIDI recognising the Hiface since adding the Uptone Regen to the scene. Macmini > Uptone Regen > HiFace > SPDIF > DAC - not working Previously (before Regen) Macmini > HiFace > SPDIF > DAC - all good. Am I getting the Regen thing all wrong? I can't connect the Regen after the HiFace as there are no SPDIF outputs. I did read on this forum that the Regen is much like a USB hub but for some reason it's blocking OS X MIDI from recognising the HiFace. Thank you very much for all answers ! Cheers, Nic
  8. Hello, posting for a buddy looking for speakers to suit his new NAIM UnitiQute 2. Room size is about 5m X 10m. He like Classic and Hard Rock. Appreciate if anyone has coupled speakers with the NAIM and can advise. thanks, Nic
  9. 1965 Lambretta SX 200 (225) racing kit. It's lovely and noisy and sexy and fast and sweet and perfect.
  10. me again, in my ever patient yet lusty drive for the sound that makes me happy I continue to lash out funds here and there, not always a step forward but sometimes a frustrating stale mate that once again forces me to reach out to the other wierdos here that must know more than me ! Those familiar with my earlier pleads for assistance and knowledge might recall my position of a bluray device playing a CD versus ripping the CD to my macmini (this time AIFF) and the resulting aural differences. I took a flight to Bangkok and found a very nice man that sold me an hiface and a pricy Korean SPDIF (whatever that is) cable thing. I got home, listened to some stuff, put the new things on the macmini and listened again - lovely. Not amazingly incredible but somehow this little hiface thing allowed the existing files to be fed from the macmini to the DAC in such a way that more separation and 'liveliness' was more evident. Hooray. All good for a month or so . . . . . . . . . The Aperture library is filling up and so is the LaCie 250GB drive I bought when I was much thinner, so I lash out again and get me a 3TB (the most scariest sounding piece of computer stuff I have ever bought) LaCie firewire 800 hard drive to keep me semi comfortable in an electronically domesticated sought of way for at least 6 months or until they start selling 10,000 mega pixel dictaphones. This blue eyed monster came with it's own firewire cable and I'm blaming all my current unhappiness on this little black skinny thing. Adele - I'm maturing, belatedly but nonetheless it's happening. Rihanna's trembling everything got me through a few months of late night drunkenness and mid afternoon drunkenness for a few months and then Adele came around, sitting on her funny chair, rattling glasses and stuff and she made me stop doing whatever I was doing which was probably eating or drinking or just swinging from the fridge door handle and I moved on even before California King Bed made MTV. Adele 21, if this is her age I pray to the Lord she doesn't drink and stuff and end up all Amy Winehouseish - Adele has me for the moment but she aint no Nina Simone yet. OK - so is it this cheapo firewire cable that came with the LaCie the problem or must I continue to exercise and insert the actual CD plastic thing in to the DVD player for sound that comes close to not feeling like a blunt bread knife skewing in to my ear holes? thank you very much for your advice - you owe me a couple of hundred dollars easily !
  11. have changed the sampling rate output to match the actual file sample rates (still confused how the macmini midi can output 44.1K to 96K and the dacmagic identifies these files as 96K) ??? my files are stored on an external firewire 800 drive. bottlerocket - am playing the CD with a SONY BDP S360 bluray DVD machine. Rihanna's LOUD CD - my god that chick has a voice, I could almost smell her breath. Incredible and slightly spooky. thanks Paul - testing Amara right now - to be honest I can not discern any difference but have not gone through a lot of my music with this player yet, let's see. Will checkout the hiface next week and hopefully this will make the difference I'm looking for. cheers, Nic
  12. yes - and that's another question I have. I think most of my files are 44.100Khz but I have the OSX midi audio built in output set at 96K - 2 channel 32 bit - this is the highest setting available. If I go through from 32 up to 96 I can safely say 96 sounds best. So how can I be feeding my dacmagic 96K files when the original 44.1K ALLC is only available ? thanks Nic
  13. Hello, I recently bought a macmini because I thought the optical out would provide a better sound than my old powerbook to airport express. It didn't. Even though I am now feeding the dacmagic 96K Hz. Just for fun I ran the optical cable from my bluray player to the dacmagic - the sound is perfect, precise, clean - lovely. I used the same CD in the DVD player that I have ripped in Apple Lossless and with a press of a button could clearly hear the difference. The DVD player is providing an excellent optical signal to the dacmagic and the sound is, well, magic!!! Why would this be? Great - I have all my music in itunes mostly Apple Lossless and I'm about to purchase the hiface in a last ditch effort to get a good signal to my dacmagic. I have proven there's nothing wrong with the optical input on the dacmagic and I have been told by a few audiophile shop dudes optical isn't as good as the USB connection - so I'm confused. Am I wasting my money on the hiface? Are all my Apple Lossless files actually not as good as the CD being played in a bluray DVD machine? thanks in advance for the good advice ! cheers, Nic
