  1. So work with the minimum number (210,000). Unless that's not enough deaths or you don't believe Mr. Lieber at all. Chris
  2. That sounds about right, if memory serves. Way back when I used to use and drive, I remember having to push myself (and the pedal) to get up to speed--and stay there, because it always felt like I was going way faster than the speedometer indicated. Chris
  3. WOW! What a thread. Priaptor said "Personally I rather people express their opinions, biased or not..., " Yes! Just to know where they stand. We in the U.S. threaten non pc types with job loss, impeachment etc. and thus scare them from revealing themselves. I'd much rather deal with a bigot out in the open than the closeted variety. And speaking of New Mexico. I lived in Santa Fe and Madrid--where David Bowie Fell to Earth, for a few years quite some time ago; At the time Madrid was a mining ghost town (almost). It had one house with electricity which a family of three and I inhabited. The rest of the town was inhabited by gay hippies who kind of ran it from the shacks that had withstood the towns ghosthood. The town also had a small general store and wonderful old bar run by folks from Santa Fe. Any thread that starts with cables and soon veers OT is a good thread in my book. Thank you Chris for letting it live. Chris
  4. Improved Search. How about Like and Absolutely Love this post. It's likely that half or more of the posts will be liked. It would be cool if really special posts could have their own special highlight. It would also be interesting if a drop down box or something similar listed the "likers." And to Sam Lord, another way around the "lost post." Use the copy function at pertinent points during your labors. I've done it and its saved me several times. Chris
  5. She may have turned a corner toward becoming an artist but in the process, in my mind (that is my listening mind) she lost something (naturalness, freshness?) which I miss more than I like her later "more artistic self." Chris
  6. Joni Mitchell Song to a Seagull and Blue. Early Joni, my favorite albums of hers. Chris
  7. Off topic but sooooo interesting. Yup. I was compelled to stop early. It's all that was available from Spotify; but I would have stopped anyway. It wasn't that interesting. Exactly the way I feel about Adele in particular; Taylor Swift, she just (picture finger down throat). Me too re pop/rock/blues what have you. BTW, this off topic topic wouldn't exist if you hadn't reacted so violently to the Bruckner. (So it's obvious folks, blame Boris75) Chris
  8. I listened to the first movement. All I can say is that it sounds much better (and larger) than I expected after reading this trashing. It's interesting if you know the Bruckner No. 2, and if you don't, you might find it more than just interesting. As to Taylor Swift, I'd rather listen to a solo flute version of the Symphony, and Adele, make it a violin and clarinet duo version. Chris
  9. Ditto. And that's not to say much for JRiver's useability, because it's complicated as hell. But still, just doing the basics is simpler. Chris
  10. I just tried sort of a down and dirty test of hi frequency hearing that matters (at least for me). The setup. I can still hear fairly well to 12 khz. I used Jriver, AT 900 headphones and some hi frequency test bands to determine my hearing capability. I then used JRiver's built-in PQ and a hi freq shelf filter (-15 db) at various frequencies. I found that using the shelf filter at about 6 khz made only a slight difference when it came to classical music and the music remained highly listenable. However when I listened to jazz (Keith Jarrett, Changes, a particularly well recorded album in the percussion) the difference was quite noticeable in the percussion even with the filter set at 8 khz, when comparing. However when not comparing everything else sounded very good, the front edge was still there on the bass for instance. A more complete well recorded album (Patricia Barber, Distortion of Love) sounded great; there was edge and air and the only really noticeable shortfall was again (as expected) in the percussion (cymbals in particular). Not a big problem in my mind if you're not comparing. BTW, there are other recording/equipment defects that matter more to me, i.e. glare and grain and grunge. The Three Gs. Chris
  11. Derekc, what a helpful and encouraging response. Thanks for coming out of the wood work, so to speak. I'm also interested in the subject although I'm not yet in need of hearing aids. I was hoping and had a bit of an inkling that something like your experience was a possibility and am so glad that you confirmed it. Chris
  12. Steel Rail and/or Drayman's Porter, Berkshire Brewing. I suggest and. Chris
  13. Bach Harpsichord Concertos, Murray Perahia (played on the piano). Some wonderfully played concerti, all the usual plus the Brandenburg #5, a concerto for flute, violin and piano and the Italian concerto. Good Sq too. Chris
  14. Mozart, The Weber Sisters, Sabine Devielhe A lovely and at times wondrous, in terms of hitting those highest of high notes precisely (and in Hell doing it with great dynamic control) performance of Mozart Arias. Some simple and not often recorded and some.... Und am ende findet man eine versteckte Leckerei. Chris
