  1. As my beloved Weiss dac and it's Firewire prime connection scheme is slowly fading into a non supported discontinued sunset replacement time is near. Obviously the Weiss dac 501 would be the top contender and since I live 10 minutes from the Grammy winning weiss headquarters in Uster Switzerland the decision is clear. BUT.... the 8000 bucks starting price is a little 🤑 for my bank account. I am looking for a usb dac, usb dac/streamer solution in the 4000 range that would make do.....Thanx. Jim Mac mini, weiss dac 202, gryphon tabu integrated,Eventus Phobos Speakers
  2. Has anyone found any sonic advantages with solid state drives. I wouldn't be using this for storage as my collection is a bit large. Running i tunes with puremusic using memory play on the ssd would be how I would implement it. Music is stored on a WD external drive using usb, output is through fire wire to a Weiss Dac 2.
  3. No, but i just did and to no avail though. Tried every plug in configuration I could think of. And all settings on the dac'c output level screw. Me thinks the amps, being a bit exotic, don't like having digitally dithered volume control put into them. All that said the sound out of the speakers is sublime. Me thinks I'll be buying a pre amp very soon, but that's a new thread
  4. upon plugging my weiss dac 2 directly into my new Orpheus monoblocks using the weiss digital level controls I get a rather loud buzz from the amps themselves. The sound out of the speakers is perfect and the buzz does not change with level adjustments or by adjusting the tiny screw in back of the unit. If I use a pre amp there is then no buzz. Any way around this??? with the goal being avoiding buying a pre amp. Thanks Jim mac-firewire-weiss dac 2-Orpheus three amps-evett and shaw presaro speakers.
  5. I have been tweeking the bench mark for about a year now and here are the results: First: I use pure silver XLR interconnects (self made) Second: Attenuation jumpers set to zero db for xlr output (the XLR output is much better than the RCA) Third: upgrade the fuse Fourth: Replaced the cheapo power cord with a good power cord (mine is self made again) Fifth: Use Pure Music software in memory mode including upsampling (this software runs terribly, crashes all the time uses up all 4 GB ram on my mac BUT it sounds better than amarra and costs shall we say somewhat less) Sixth: Use a M2Tech interface BNC option with a good but not to expensive BNC cord Seventh: Mac users go to Audio Midi Setup_Properties For: M2 Tech Highface_Audio Output_Format_set this to 192000.0 Hz then the Pure Music will upsample to this level. This you should experiment with I myself get good results with redbook cd rips and I don't upsample on 96 khz plus music files Warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Realize that the upgrades here work as a package, a night and day audible difference with the individual tweeks should not be expected (exception is with zero db setting on XLR output). Having done all of them I am definitely enjoying my system more than ever before. And don't forget: Results May Vary Depending On System!!!!!! Footnote: I have recently auditioned a Weiss Dac2 comparing it with this benchmark set up conclusions are coming soon.
