One iTunes library, multiple devices and sample rates

Hello ... Currently I have one iTunes lib full of uncompressed AIFF files for playback on my main system. It's about 700GB. For my iPod I copy all the files using the iTunes facility to automatically do the conversion to 128 Kbps. If I want to have a higher sample rate for my iPod, what would be the best way to manage the creation and maintenance of the duplicate files? All advice welcome! David
