  1. What I do before recording is play a section of the loudest peak on the record to set levels. Of course, you should keep an eye on it just in case. After spending more time with the Duet and finally acquiring a much better phono-stage, the PS Audio GCPH I went back to recording via the XLR option. The GCPH offers gain adjustments so I can raise the max 10DB if needed. I can't say which input is better as I've tried both with great results, but I think the XLR is more solid and what the Duet and Sweetwater techies recommended when I first purchased this wonderful device.
  2. Well, I'm happy for now, as I am able to record with gain control in the input instrument and it sounds wonderful, much better than my Transit.
  3. Well, I see four sets of sliders and none of them or the mixer were mentioned in the Apogee tutorial in regards to recording from a tape or records. I played with it a bit in Garageband and Amadeus with the XLR input and the software at least is not responding or ignoring whenever I raise or lower the sliders. Not to say that nothing is happening to the actual recording. This is all so confusing. I purchased this device for simplicity. My M-audio Transit was easy. But I guess if you want better sound, the situation get a tad more complicated. You appear to have owned the device longer than I. How do you record, and what interconnects?
  4. This is strictly from the control. I have no use for the mixer at this point.
  5. That's weird. Here are my options in the drop down box in the input section of Maestro: XLR Line +4dBu XLR Line -10dBV XLR Mic Instrument Does yours differ?
  6. Actually, I was told to use the XLR Line in not Mic in, but it's good to know the quality is the same using instrument in as that is the only way to adjust gain. I was going to wait for that new Furutech GT40 USB DAC with phono stage that was announced in Jan but who knows when that will ever be released. I e-mailed them regarding release date but no answer.
  7. Maestro has two input settings, one for like a receiver, and an instrument in. Only in instrument in can you adjust gain. All gain is grayed when you select input XLR -10DBV.
  8. Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 2.16 Core Duo and 2 gig RAM. I just bought an Apogee Duet to mainly make digital copies of my vinyl records. Several sources told me the best way to connect and do this is via RCA to XLR cable, so I got that too. So I connected my Music Hall pre-amp which is connected to my MH 5.1 turntable to my MacBook's firewire 400 with the XLR cable. However, I quickly discovered that you cannot set recording levels(gain) through hardware or software using the Duets input XLR line -10dBV. I tried this with Amadeus Pro (my favorite)and the latest version of Garageband. One record was recorded too loud(clipping) and the other a tad too low. In addition, I could not record 24/96 in Garageband, only in Amadeus Pro. I'm pretty positive all my Snow Lep settings are correct for sound and MIDI. I then changed cords and just did the rca 1/4 and changed Duet setting to instrument input and I was then able to adjust gain. I haven't quite yet listened to compare but is the instrument input way inferior to XLR sound-wise, because there seems to be a bit of a trade-off here. No gain control or supposedly better connection. Hope that makes sense. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
