  1. After the 2.0.1 update aries would not recognise usb output to Geek Pulse xfi. It worked before. Hmmm. I have sent an email to Auralic. Fortunately it works with my other dac a W4S mPre. Everything seems to work faster.
  2. Great thoughts Superdad, you've summed up my feelings on Geek Source'ing' very well and you've done it in a very balanced way. I too am very positive towards LH Geek having ordered the Geek Out and Pulse but annoyances have started to creep in such as the overwhelming and complex myriad of options on the Pulse. Normally I would jump to order the Geek Source but this and delays have put me off...for now at least.
  3. Thanks for sharing this. Has anyone heard/tested the reclocker from Empirical audio? I'm particularly interested in whether it makes a notable sound improvement to a Sonos.
  4. Personally I think there is a market for a jitter reducer but don't stop at apple tv, would like to have one for Sonos, Squeezebox..
  5. I have recently purchased a new Rega Dac and connected it to a Sonos via optical. I am SO impressed with the sound. However, I recently connected a MacBook again via optical to the dac to play some HD tracks (24/96) I downloaded for free to trial via iTunes and Audirvana plus. I first played 'normal' (16/44) tracks and mp3's with no problem. Then played HD tracks and got a bad case of pops and crackles (yes like playing vinyl) with background static noise. This interference then remained when I stopped playing and remained when I went back to playing my 'normal' tracks. What's going on? Is it the mac, software? I did not turn off anything on the mac for my trial (Time machine etc). I know it's not the cable because I tried 3 of them. I doubt it's the dac as Sonos plays fine through it. I doubt it's the tracks I downloaded as I played them ok on a wd live just to check.
  6. You guys have raised an interesting question for me that I've wondered about for a while. I have many albums that I have loved of a genre most people call alternative or punk. Groups like Nirvana, Jesus and Mary Chain, White Stripes, Smashing Pumpkins, Ramones, My Bloddy Valentine, Velvet Underground etc. I listened to them on LP and cassette in 80's 90's on LoFi equipment, poor quality car stereos and boom boxes (remember them?)and they sounded great! Their sound often comprised guitar feedback, fuzzy sounds and a wall of sound! I am not sure these groups ever intended their albums to be released in Hi Res....am I wrong? Does anyone like me who listened to those records when they were released still get a buzz when listening now in Hi Res on audiophile equipment?? Or is the magic broken?

    iTunes 10

Chris I'm new to NAS drives but when I upgraded to 10 it no longer displayed my songs stored on the NAS drive (QNAP TS219p). My understanding is that many NAS drives use Firefly iTunes Server to stream the music from the NAS onto iTunes. In iTunes 10 it displayed the NAS under the Shared folder but when I clicked on it, no songs were displayed. Many report the same problem. Link may explain issue better than me http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12196479

    iTunes 10

Many forums reporting that iTunes 10 appears to be no longer compatible with firefly media server. I upgraded to iTunes 10 and all music on my NAS drive was no longer available. Suggest anyone with music on NAS do not upgrade until this is sorted. I have already rolled back to iTunes 9.2. Anyone know of solution?
  9. You're right I don't stream flac, I stream AIFF to AE. I'm now thinking I'll leave it as is with mac running in background. Maybe upgrade my dac. I'll leave Sonos until I see whether I start to get annoyed with this set up after a while.
  10. Audio_newb I see why you ask the question. I actually ripped my cd's in 3 formats Flac, WMA and AIFF to give me flexibility and have a back up. I mentioned flac earlier as it was my plan to play flac files from NAS drive primarily. Currently my music is all over the place. I have mp3's and apple lossless music downloaded from net on my mac and pc, CD's ripped to NAS which I can stream via mac or pc to AE. I'm just trying to tidy it all up and store music in one location (NAS).
  11. The reason i want to be able to listen to music without having to turn on a mac is one of convenience more than anything. I'd love to be able to listen all my music in each listening room without running to start up the mac first. I just thought of another potential solution/question on the Apple TV. Could I put all my music onto a usb drive, plug it into the Apple TV and have that connected to hifi AND control it with an iTouch??
  12. The mac mini was an option I also considered very hard. However at the time the price of getting it working is almost the same as a Sonos. So I discounted it as an option determined I surely don't need to buy another piece of hardware. Now I'm starting to think I can't avoid it be it Sonos or Mini. What has me leaning towards the Sonos is the fact for a similar price I can have it working without taxing my existing network. I'm aware of the shortcomings of a Sonos - drm for one, being tied to one solution for the future is another. Am I missing another apple based solution??
  13. Appreciate the comments audio_newb. Unfortunately Apple Tv wouldn't hold all my collection as I have approx 300+gb worth of music in flac. I have been considering the Sonos very seriously but felt I should be able to do it with what I have already (mac/NAS/Airport Express/iTouch/DAC). I kept thinking surely I can do this without having the mac on. Anyway your thoughts have confirmed what I thought might be the case. I'll reconsider the Sonos option I guess.
  14. I was afraid you'd say that...If I replace the Airport Express with an Apple TV, would that do it? Or can I not get around having the mac on?
