1. Many thanks & given the feedback I`m getting I`ll be researching more on best rip methodologies/equipment and doing that. Cheers, CB13
 2. Thank you very much for your comments and I now see the complete logic in the computer CD-R given it`s ability to check "it`s own work" and be happy before proceeding.... like it ! Cheers. CB13
 3. Hi ~ `newboy` to the whole computeraudiophile line here & trying to shuffle off the mortal coil of hi-end audio... Question ~ can I rip CD`s from a traditional CD transport only unit to a PC (or a music server)? I don`t yet have any worthwhile computeraudio kit and was wondering if I should keep the (good) transport to perhaps send the digital signal out to a.n.other unit appropriately kitted out to take said signal & rip to a drive of some kind in as high a quality as possible.... or sell the transport ? Thank you.
 4. Hi James ~ thanks for the info, I`ll be looking into your pointer.

Cheers, Alex
 5. Hi Daniel ~ once I get something up and running I will certainly do so !

Alex
 6. Hi ~ really enjoyed this article. As an old school high end audiophile with a squillion CDs, and reading the writing on the wall for physical formats, I`m jumping ship to computer audio, and am a total newby here, so please forgive the simplicity with which I dive in here.

Now, me. Computerphile ? - no. Really interested in the details of computers, OS`s and all that kinda stuff - `fraid not. Closest to plug `n` play as possible... yes please !

My needs are simple; replay that will equal or surpass my Oracle CD2500 (pro upgraded/ modified to be truely at the top of redbook playback). I need to rip a current CD collection as well as can be done today, store it, and replay it to the highest quality possible today that will do justice to the rest of the high end system. I`m a stereo man through & through, so no interest in X.1 replay.

The server needs to be silent and sit atop my rack, so needs to be `quite pretty ` too. After reading the Win 7 & JRiver article there, that looks like the way to go. As I need to playback new (to see if they`re worth ripping as the download selection is too limiting at the moment) & rip CDs an optical drive is needed (I`ve been told that a good blu-ray drive is best for ripping... can someone explain this (simply) to me, if indeed its true please?. If it is, which is best and compatible with the parts I`m listing in this posting.

I like the Origen cases, and reckon I`d opt for a mid or full size case. Lynx 16 seems de-rigeur so in it goes.
SSD memory looks like a good idea too, over hard drives, so I`d need a few slots and as the spec improves would upgrade these to hold the required capacity of rips/downloads.

...and here`s where I call upon yourself and others in the computeraudiophile community for help, as I`m now well out of steam in terms of knowledge. I`m so `unable` that I`d get someone to actually put the server together and configure.

Another question ~ as many of you will also be (ex)`conventional`high end audiophiles you`ll be familiar with the concept of overspec`d very high quality power supplies and what a genuine difference thay can make to sound quality, including digital kit.... does this still apply in music server land? ...and how about vibration isolation and EMF/RFI, etc shielding ?

I`m willing to spend decent money to get the best, and reckon that the CAPS server in the review might act as a good `base `platform from which to build so, is what I`m looking to do one step beyond? or is it indeed madness.....

Anyway, I`d be delighted to receive feedback , advice, suggestions and so on ...and, as while I`m listing certain things above as what I`d get, this is ENTIRELY FLEXIBLE as the ultimate, ultimate, goal here is the best sound possible (and futureproofing/upgradeability as far as possible).

Very many thanks in advance of your help & advice.
