  1. Well, I could do a small test with one of the tracks from the CD compared to one from the download, but I am not sure my ears are that good at spotting any differences :-)
  2. Well, it will never be one since they recorded the music 44.1/24. I got this info and a temporary link to a download 44.1/24 directly from Bernhard Schuler, the piano player from Triosence, as a courtesy. Mihnea
  3. I am also a new owner of a Synology 412+ NAS stuffed with 3 4TB Seagate NAS drives configured in RAID5 (actually it's a proprietary Synology type of RAID called SHR, which allows for easy RAID extensions). Since this NAS comes with 2 gigabit Ethernet ports capable of teaming, I went for a switch capable of that. I chose Cisco SG200-08p which has been working very well since. It also features 4 PoE (powered) Ethernet ports which are good if you want to use an IP camera for surveillance or something (the Synology comes with a very nice surveillance package). For router/wifi I have a small Apple Airport Express 3rd generation (it's an older model), but it does the job. Well, except for the wifi which is a bit slow compared to my even older TimeCapsule - my MacBook accessing the music library from the NAS through wifi gets dropouts, so I will draw an Ethernet cable to the MacBook and keep the wifi for iPad, smatphones and such. I also don't recommend going for Cat6 cables since you won't get any speed advantage, but you will end up with a cable more difficult to bend and thicker. If you don't have extended runs of cable in parallel with power lines, you don't need to worry about shielding the cable either.
  4. Thanks for sharing this! I will definitely give it a shot. Mihnea
  5. I tried to access the iTunes music library on the NAS from my MacBook over wifi, but I get dropouts. Strange this didn't happen when wifi was provided by my old TimeCapsule but it does happen with a 3rd generation Airport Express. I will draw an Ethernet cable to my MacBook anyway, wifi was just an interim. The biggest annoyance with the music library sitting on a NAS is when waking up your Mac and noticing your shared music folder on the NAS is missing This seems to be an OSX issue starting with Mountain Lion. I am still trying to find a reasonable workaround, although it seems the best one (using a free software called SleepWatcher) involves lots of command line and scripting Mac OS X: Automatically connect to a network drive when your computer starts up or wakes from sleep | Blue Piccadilly
  6. Make sure your minipro drive is formatted as ext3 or ext4, since Synology's backup software cannot write on HFS+ (Apple's own filesystem). I had to reformat my USB drive with ext4 to be able to use it as a backup drive (actually Synology did the formatting).
  7. Now that I saw this mentioned here I can also say that I have heard several times white noise at annoyingly high volume being played when the music stopped playing in A+. I didn't look for a cause since this usually happened late at night and I jumped to grab the remote and shut down the pre/power amp at once! Looking back to this I also remember that high res music was being played and the playlist came to an end before white noise could be heard. It never happened while pressing the pause or stop buttons in A+. I have a M2Tech Evo USB-SPDIF convertor fed thorough USB from my MacBook, which in turn feeds the Chord DAC through SPDIF.
  8. Ditto for Anat Fort Trio, thank you Musicophile for this recommendation! Mihnea
  9. Robert, thanks a lot for this thorough recommendation. Several items are already downloading :-) Mihnea
  10. Yes, this was exactly my issue when I first installed my new hifi gear in this room: a lack of bass in my chosen listening position! And booming bass near the rear wall (and not only). Those were addressed with tube traps. Another downside of the concrete walls is the reflections in the mids and highs, which is extremely annoying. This also calls for acoustic panels for treating first reflections.
  11. Hi Barry, That's exactly what I did to find and mark those first reflections on the side walls. I am using acoustic panels from GIK, which are not too wide at all, but I found that using only one pair of panels to address the first reflections closer to the speakers and leave the second reflection points untreated (the first reflection caused by the left speaker on the right wall and right speaker of the left wall) produces a more lively and enjoyable sound. Again, it might be due to the fact that I use smaller speakers and also due to my couch being placed along the right wall, with its backrest acting like an absorbent for mids and highs. My room is not even due to furniture placement and also due to how I installed my 2 columns of tube traps in only 2 out of the 4 corners, one in front-right corner and one in the rear-left corner. And they also absorb some of the mids and highs, making the whole business even more uneven :-). But overall I am happy with the result.
  12. In my experience in a small room with all walls made of reinforced concrete is that treating the first reflections on the side walls made sense, but only those produced by the speaker nearer to that wall. In other words, I installed only 2 acoustic panels, one on each side wall. And one on the rear wall behind the listing position. Adding the second set of panels on the side walls seemed to over damp the sound, so I took them off. It could be that my speakers are small bookshelf speakers on stands that they do not require acoustic treatment for the second reflection point.
  13. From what I've read on tube traps they recommend pulling the tubes several inches away from corners when listening to classical music in order to increase a bit the reverberations, which seem to favor this type of music. I haven't tried this myself since I have no space for moving my tube traps, but would be interested to know if others have fiddled with them and noticed any improvements. Mihnea
