  1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't get Airfoil to work reliably. After messing around for a couple of weeks with both MediaMonkey/RSO and iTunes, I eventually decided to use the latter. The whole setup-- iTunes outputting to the Airport Express and controlled by Remote from my iTouch-- just works.
  2. I have settled, for the time being, on using MediaMonkey streaming (wired) to an Airport Express feeding into my amp (an external DAC is warming up in the bullpen, but not in the game just yet). For the past week, I have been playing around using this setup with Eric Mille's Remote Speakers plugin. Just as I was about to pull the trigger on registering this plugin, I was made aware of a product called Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba which is supposed to accomplish the same thing. I have not even downloaded this yet, but before I distrupt my setup, can anyone tell me if there is any sound quality differences between these two options?
  3. Is a Mac mini with 2 GB sufficient to run a dedicated music server? I would have a hard time believing the answer would not be "yes".
  4. Most CD's I've purchased arrive in pretty decent condition. I've had to attempt cleaning on maybe 4 or 5 out of hundreds. My understanding is that if I rip using something like EAC and it reports a successful rip with no errors, that means it's extracted all the bits that are there to be extracted and cleaning would serve no further purpose. Am I correct in this assumption? If you know how to use ebay searches, you can limit the price. I usually set a ceiling of $3 on any CD I'm looking to buy and will pay no more than $3 for shipping ($6 total). Most CD's I end up buying are for $1 or less-- depending, of course, on how badly I want that particular disc and how in demand it is (most CD's I'm buying are not particularly in demand).
  5. Yes I'm sure. I do not have a wireless router, and I have an ethernet cable running across the floor and down the hall way (temporarily for testing purposes, but still much to the consternation of my wife) from the PC in the office to the Airport Express in the living room near the audio system. I'm thinking I still need RSO. It was the only way I could find to direct MM output to the AE-- whether it be connected wired or wireless I don't think matters.
  6. I haven't bought a new CD in 10 years. Ebay is your friend. 49 out of 50 CD's I've bought have been just fine. As you said, the CD either gets imported or it doesn't. The couple lemons I've gotten have been no big deal-- most people will simply refund your money on such a small purchase-- any that don't are no big deal because you're only shelling out a couple of bucks at most (OK, $5 at most including shipping). I have not had any problem with pirated material on Ebay purchases. Every disc I've bought has been legit.
  7. I was able to get MM talking to AE over a wired connection just fine, but only after installing Remote Speaker. I'm just trying to confirm that I do, in fact, need Remote Speaker in this case (using AE wired as opposed to wireless).
  8. You said if I ever want to go wireless from MM -> AE I would need Remote Speaker Output, but I need this even if I go wired from MM -> AE (as I outlined in my original post), correct? The only way I could get MM to output to the AE was to install this plug-in.
  9. Thanks everyone for your replies. I've ordered the Airport Express to start out and will hopefully get it before the end of the week. Since I first posted, I've read that iTunes might not be the best option for a PC user. I also learned that there is an iTouch-based remote option for Media Monkey (which I already have installed). I downloaded and installed iTunes over the weekend, so I have only had a day or two playing with it, whereas I've had MM installed for quite some time and really like it's features. Are we talking differences in sound quality between the two?
  10. Hello, newbie here... love this forum. After spending many weeks browsing this and other similar forums looking for possible solutions to getting audio from my PC to my home audio system, I have come up with the following idea: I would like to have the audio files stored on my main PC which will be located in a home office. My audio system is located in the living room. I currently have a wired-only router with DSL internet. I would like to avoid wireless as I don't have a wireless network presently and I like the security and dependability of wired-- but I also like the possibility of having a wireless remote to control things. So my (perhaps half-baked) plan is to use iTunes on the PC playing Apple lossless format. Purchase an Apple Airport Express which I will locate near the home audio system and connect via ethernet cable to my router (running cable through the crawlspace is no problem). Purchase an iPod Touch to provide remote control operation of iTunes. I will try connecting the Airport Express to my amp via the mini-jack at first, but would also like to have the option to use an extenal DAC via the USB port on the AE in the future. Is all this going to work, or have I missed some critical detail that would prevent it from working? And a question: is an 8 GB iPod Touch adequate to run the iTunes remote software?
