    Audio MYTHS

i read the audiocritic 10 myths with interest. from personal experience i have found that cables do change with use. i have experienced it with both interconnects and speaker cables. when i recently changed my speaker cables i continuously had something playing including white noise, pink noise, etc., for a number of days. periodically i would put on "spanish harlem" by Rebecca Pidgeon recorded at Chesky Studios. the audio changed. the first day it sounded good, the second the quality got worse, the third day was a vast improvement over the first day. nothing else changed in my listening room. even the temperature remained constant although humidity levels might have changed. did my ears change?! my amplifier sounds "better" (more detailed, more separation, etc) after an hour of playing. it has no moving parts that need to get worn in. the article states that only moving parts need wearing in. although i do not listen to cds anymore, when i did and played the same track twice it would sound different. only slightly but still different. i thought about this on a molecular level. the laser is disrupting the molecular surface of the cd when it reads. those molecules need to "settle" again. this requires a period of time. this was the only reason that i could logically come up with. different hard drives sound different in my experience yet surely it is only an image of binary code? the digital domain is still in its infancy. jitter might well be only one of a number of effects on the audio quality. i think that power supply is very important. when i upgraded the power supply on my pc, the audio changed. once again, only slightly but a change all the same. i must admit to have gone through a stage of constant tweaking of my system! one can become anally retentive about the whole thing! i am a firm believer in garbage in, garbage out. that has everything to do with the original engineer and his/her ears as well as the mastering engineer.
  2. i must say that i am impressed by the prompt replies that i am getting on this site! because my listening room is also my recording room i am tending towards my desktop pc being out of the room and running a longer firewire to my RME 800. my only problem will be connecting the monitor so that it is accessible to view comfortably. i keep designing and redesigning the layout of my room. i have the basics; acoustic panels, bass traps and a fairly good equpiment setup. recording ability adds a whole other dimension to just sitting in my carefully positioned listening chair, closing my eyes and enjoying music! i'll share some 24bit recordings on this site when i am happy with the engineering! once again, thanks for the suggestions. Bob, i was looking at the WD 'Green' series today online as i need to add another hdd. after being a fan of seagate for a number of years, myself and friends have noticed a drop-off in the quality of their products and so i am looking for an alternative. Dynobot, thanks for giving me something else to investigate! the digital domain opens up whole new possibilities but also new problems. i find it fascinating!
  3. anyone got any suggestions, preferences or experiences in regards to as quiet as possible CPU cooling systems. the array of products seems to be huge! also, suggestions on best power supplies for a desktop and quietest HDD of 1Tb would be appreciated. thanks!
  4. i have a small home recording studio and am also passionate about listening to music (more dynamic range in recordings and less compression please!). i am planning to buy an RME Fireface 800 to link with my pc. the outputs for the 800 are: Output DA: 8 x 1/4" TRS, servo-balanced, DC-coupled signal path. 1 x 1/4" TRS unbalanced Output Digital: 2 x ADAT optical or SPDIF optical, SPDIF coaxial (AES/EBU compatible) i have an audio analogue integrated amplifier maestro settanta (first generation) which only has stereo RCA inputs. i like this amplifier a lot. it drives my B&W speakers very well and gives a very neutral listening experience. it was also a bit of an investment and i cannot afford to change it. my question. how can i connect my amplifier to the 800? can i use 1/4inch TS to RCA, therefore unbalanced, and not lose audio quality? is there another option? also, can anyone recommend good interconnects that are not going to cost me the earth (i'm a gardener so wish that i could pay with earth!). 24bit recordings are the future. so is less compression in the recording or mastering studio in my humble opinion. that is why i love listening to Chesky Records productions. the CD is dead, long live the hard drive!
