  1. I come to the same conclusion between these two s/w players as you. I find the presentation with Amarra to just sound more organic and lifelike. Percussion instruments have a more tactile feel to them. There's an almost omni-directional, "share the air" of the performance quality that I don't get with PM, even though PM does sound "clear" and is an improvement over naked iTunes. Still, Amarra-mini (mignon) does have a few bugs to work out, e.g., no remote control function while in Playlist mode, limit on the number of songs that can be loaded into Playlist, the songs have to bit of the same bit-rate, etc. Interestingly I can use Force Quit to shut down iTunes while playing a song in Playlist mode, but as soon as the next songs comes up in the Playlist iTunes also re-opens (in the background).
  2. "It's Diana Krall singing Tom Waits's classic "Temptation" from her "Girl In The Other Room" album." Thanks for the artist and album info. Holly Cole does a slower, breathier cover, as well as other Waits songs, on her Temptation album- Jersey Girl being a highlight for me. BTW, I have a dedicated playlist that is only original songs and their covers. I'm especially keen on different versions of Miles Davis' So What and All Blues. happy listening, Chris

Here are some jitter measurements showing how a switch mode power supply (SMPS) effects the digital output, compared to battery power... http://stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/cambridge_audio_azur_dacmagic_da_converter/index3.html Many SMPSs operate around the 70 kHz range, and if poorly implemented, don't do a good job of filtering out that freq. on the DC output. BTW, I'm still finding Amarra-mini to sound better than Pure Music. PM, while sounding "accurate", just doesn't bring the organic, natural, 3-dimensional quality to the music that Amarra does (on my system). When using Amarra my speakers take on an almost omni-directional quality, which they were decidely designed not to be to avoid room intercaction issues. Music that was engineered for "audio acrobats" e.g., William Orbit, becomes untethered from the speaker plane and flies around the room. It's an amazing effect that even my non-audio friends are blown away by. Just my 2 pesos.

Just noticed there's a 1.1 version out, compared to the 1.02 version I downloaded just the other day.
  5. Hey neighbo(u)rs- Here are jitter measurements from three reviews that can provide a little insight into how a battery-powered source (i.e., laptop) can help fight the war on jitter... Scroll down to the jitter measurements of each page. http://stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/cambridge_audio_azur_dacmagic_da_converter/index3.html http://stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/wavelength_cosecant_v3_usb_digitalanalog_converter/index5.html http://stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/ayre_acoustics_qb-9_usb_dac/index6.html Switch-mode power supplies, typical of most for laptops, are the worst culprit; but even 120 hz (and/or other 60 hz multiples) can creep into jitter as well using non-SMPSs, unless carefully designed. I use these... http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103979 ...when having to listen to the laptop in non-battery-powered mode. Chris
  6. MBP service manual, dated 20 Feb 2006 http://www.scribd.com/doc/8237/Macbook-Pro I used it for installing an SSD, and while I was at it, removing that pesky little auto-sleep magnet. My late 2007 MBP internals are slightly different than the manual's, esp. re: the magnet, but close enough to figure out. Closed flat, running SSD quiet, and powered by battery makes the MBP a sexy little solid state server. BTW, these older MBPs can take up to 6gb (2+4) of RAM, but you give up a percentage point or two in the Memory and Stream scores using Geekbench 2.1, due, I believe, to the loss of the dual channel memory functionality, which requires two RAM sticks of the same size. I don't know what Amarra values more, a 2gb greater RAM pool (over 4gb) or a point or two of Stream performance. Anybody have an idea? Chris PS Thanks for the contributions to this site. What a resource!
  7. Since Amarra bypasses coreaudio, shouldn't we only renice Amarra and iTunes? Thanks
  8. fotographer1- The A2's have a remarkably clean treble, especially for the price... http://www.stereophile.com/budgetcomponents/1207ae/index4.html Read the rest of the review to get the complete skinny. I have the A5s, and they, combined w/ my MBP, are my hotel system when car-traveling. The A2s are even more portable, if that's a factor for you. Echo Audio is my goto place here in Portland for buying and selling gear. My amp and speakers below came from there. The owner, Kurt, is a true gent. http://echohifi.com/ happy listening, Chris
  9. Computer AND Audiophile- two obsessions coming together to create a "dangerous synergy" in the pursuit of the next best thing.
