  1. You have a connector on the end of the Power Supply that shipped with the Duet2... I just matched them up... Phil
  2. The Duet 2 does sound better with the external linear supply... But I think I'm going to change the output caps from the Black Gates to the Sanyo Oscon caps... should be way better. Organic poly caps are better for most things digital. We shall see.
  3. The tech guy at Apogee said "When the Duet sees the external PS it uses it rather than the bus powered one" It is my guess that is only partially true. My belief is that they still use the Ground leg of the DC power supply when the Duet "sees" the external PS. But at this time I am not sure... I will be able to test for this... One fine day..
  4. You are very right... Thoss guys build some of the best stuff on the planet. I have some high voltage PS from them... Built like a brick shi house. Got it from Jon... Just check the ripple at the output... I hate that when the AC ripple gets in the DC...
  5. I use a Sorensen SRL 40-6 power supply for my mac mini... It's big, it's heavy (45 lbs) it's a very fine lab grade PS. WAF... VERY LOW But it is Very cool. I would not use an old beater PS... I like to get kinda new used stuff... Go to Jon Beau web site: http://www.users.qwest.net/~jbau/tstequip.htm Jon was the Builder of the Old Spica speaker systems. Good values good prices.
  6. The Apogee Duet 2 is 5 volts DC @ about 1.5 amps Call or eMail Ron at Welborn Labs.... He will give you the info... My PS gives up to 2 amps (plenty) his will deliver 3.5 or so at load. (no I will not sell them) Buy his... (His site is kinda confusing) But his stuff is good.
  7. http://www.welbornelabs.com/psreghc.htm Look at this...This guy has balls. Spend you money on good stuff.
  8. It's 99 bucks... Its MIGHT be better than the wall wart that comes with the Duet 2. That said... To me, it looks like a cheap POS made in China. Very Minimal cap filtering. Not a great grade of filter caps. Not the best and or quietest voltage regulators... maybe that part costs 25 cents Example: Linear Technology makes GREAT regulators... Very Low noise guys about 5 bucks per part. ETC Etc... One CAN build great audio electronics but to do so requires great parts... Cheap parts ... yeah you get what you pay for. But you will not know until you buy it and try it. Retails for $99 Est. cost to build 20 bucks or less. Who will repair it? How many years of service will you get from it. I have a Colins Transmitter that was made in 1950 that is still killer. OR Check out this link: http://www.welbornelabs.com/psdac.htm
  9. Mine will move a bit to the left and right. It will also move up and down but to a lesser extent. The contacts are what is important... they are gold plated. Mine seem to make good contact... But you do bring up a good point.... Are these USB connectors really the "Best" solution for music transfer ???? Maybe BNC might be better? One BNC for the DC and One BNC for the data??? Might be a better idea. To do it, the shield would need to be isolated from the chassis... I dont know... Try it and let as know
  10. In a word my cable is much better, 28 ga. silver with cotton jacket is simply better. Better wire... fewer connections... better dielectrics... BUT mine is worse when it comes to handling... Apogee's is way better. Mine is delicate and requires careful handling. Power supply is a work in progress... I'm working on a Low Noise AC Amp to measure the noise of the various configurations. So what I am using now will not be what winds up in the final design. The Box is solid aluminum... To big! The finished box will be the same size as the Duet 2
  11. My DAC are very very good. Are they better than commercial/ pro gear? In a word... yep. Cheap that are not... Thousands and thousands in parts. Labor??? In commercial audio price is very important. For an example... Let us say you want to hit the $5000 retail price point... This means that you Can NOT spend More than about $1000. dollars for labor AND parts! So if you want to go with that lovely handcrafted Intact Audio Transformer (about $1500. ) that is simply out of the question. Its 5 to one folks. The retail guys get a huge cut... 40 percent or so... and they need that to just stay in the game. Today the economics rule the HIFI industry with an iron hand... its no ones fault, It is just is to expensive to hand build anymore. And for digital hand building is out of the question... small parts and they are getting smaller. The pathways are tiny...(good thing). But if you need the quality... ??? The DAC we have today are truly a wonder... even the cheapest ones are good and getting better. Started electronics at age 8 and nine some 57 years ago. I do not have to make a living selling them...time is not a question and cost is not part of the picture. I can cut and try until the cows come home or it sounds good. The chip set in the Duet2 is the same as in the new Symphony... kinda. They sound similar but unless you are willing to let the Duet play with the same or better power supply you won't get that sound. I got to learn and study with the Greats in electronics, computer and radio. I was and is great fun! So I might be able to build the worlds best DAC... so what. If the music is recorded on a shitty DAC what good is it? Hey, for me, its about the fun.
  12. For the last 7 or 8 years I have had this DAC quest. I have built at least 10 varieties with different power supply configurations. I have modded at least a dozen of dacs built by others. Apogee Lynx Lavery Weiss Focusrite Digidesign Cranesong Audio Note etc etc... each of them have a quality and a downfall. Some are cheap some are expensive. I like DACs. A good DAC can make your day. It's like a good cartridge. I currently have Apogee duet2, Apogee Ensamble, Apogee Symphony, Lynx Aurora, Focusrite, Wavelenght Brick, Ultra Fi, ... and thee homemade DACs. Love them all.
