1. I considering purchasing a Grant Fidelity DAC-11. Can anyone provide their experience with this DAC?
2. Stuarth, Thank you very much for answering note. You help is greatly appreciated. Greg
3. Joseph, I am thinking of getting th new 2011 Mac Mini and the Wyred Dac-2 and Pure Music. I think you were thinking of the same system in your note above. Did you get the system you were considering? If so how do you like the setup? Does it sound better than a good cd player? Li have a few questions if you do not mind me asking. - what file format are you using to oblation the best quality sound? - are you using a HHS or ssd external drive - what other lessons learned can you share? Thanks for considering corresponding with. I am newto this and trying to learn how to build s system. Thanks Greg
4. I am a novice to computer audio. I need help from members of the Computer Audiophile to learn how to set-up a good basic music server. I am hoping to build the server for around $3,000. Currently, I am considering building a music server from the following: - New Mac Mini 2.3ghz (upgrade RAM to 8gb) - Wyred-4-Sound DAC2 - Pure Music Software I have the following questions: (1) Do you have any other recommendations to the hardware and software I am considering above? (2) What file format should I convert my CD's to obtain the highest sound quality and what software program should I use to convert the files? (3) How is the best way to store your music files to obtain the highest sound resolution? I see on the C.A.S.H list has 3 categories of storage. First, was "Disk Storage", second "HDD" and third "SSD". Which storage method would you recommend? Also, what is the best way/source to back-up your files? (4) If I use the DAC2, what input should I use for the best sound and what would be the recommend brand of cable to use? (5) Since the new Mac Mini does not have a optical drive. What external optical drive would you recommend? (6) Are there any other things I should be considering in building my music server? Thank you very much in considering to help me as a novice learning and building my first music server. Your help is greatly appreciated.
5. Leigh, Thanks for the detailed information. I appreciated you commenting that you are using ProTools 9 software. Have you tried the Audirvana or Pure Music software? How do they compare to ProTools 9? I appreciated the information regarding Apogee Duet. I checked with Apogee and they advised that Duet 2 would not work with my Mac G5 since it will only work with the Intel processor. They recommended the Apogee Mini DAC. Are you familiar with this DAC? They indicated that the Apogee Duet 2 sounded better than the original Duet and the Mini Dac would be close to the sound of the Duet 2. Again, thanks for your thoughts. PS- I was impressed with your system you described in one of your responses.
6. Leigh thank you very much for your comments. They were extremely helpful. I was thinking about going with FireWire before I read your comments. Now I am really considering the Apogee Duet. question- It appears that the Apogee Duet only has an 1/8" headphone jack out. I assume you use the 1/8" jack out and then have RCA jacks going to your preamp Left and Rigt in. Is that correct?
7. Just purchased a Mac Computer and want to know how to obtain the best audio sound for the buck. Do you get the best sound using USB, FireWire or Optical out from the computer to the DAC? My DAC has a coaxial in and optical in. If USB or FireWire out is recommended what converter would you recommend (like pay no more than $500 for interface)? I am new to the world of computer audio and your help is greatly appreciated.
8. I am just wanting to get my feet wet in setting up a music server. To start out I just purchased a Apple G5 Computer (as recommend by the site). I currently have a Lite DAC with a optical and coaxial interface. I have 3 questions: (1) To get the best sound should I use the optical out or FireWire out on the Apple G5? (2) If the recommendation is to go with the fireWire output, what would be the best recommendation for a interface to go from the FireWire to SPDIF? If possible I would like to get an interface for $300 or less (would be willing to find something used on ebay or Audiogon) (3) Is the new Mac Mini that much better than the Apple G5 in establishing a music server. Thanks for your help as I am trying to learn about creating a music server.
9. Chris (and other members)

Thank you for the article regarding the music server for a song. I am new to the idea of a music server. First, thought was to go with USB port out of the computer. However, I understand that you will get better sound quality with a digital sound card. Your suggested music server used a Lynx studio sound card. The Lynx sound card is a little be more than what I want to spend to try out a music server. In doing additional investigations I found an M-Audio 192 sound card. I understand this card has a digital coxial out and also analog out. I was also advised this card had a built in DAC. What do you thinjk of the M-Audio 192? Does unit have a good DAC that comes on the card or do you still need an add on DAC? Any other suggestions regardng a digital sound card in the M-Audio 192 price range? Also, what is your recommendation on a reasonable priced tube DAC?

Thanks for trying to help be learn more about building a music server.

CBMAN
