OK - need a little help with a first world problem: I have fallen out of love with DSD. Initially liked the unique "analog-like" and less hifi sound of DSD256 upsampling with ASDM5 or 7 EC2. Now - after DSP calibrating my speakers - PCM upsampling to 384 with poly-sinc-mp rules the day, whereas DSD upsampling (Gauss long) sounds "boring" and a little sluggish. Other settings? Comments apply exclusively to rebook. Mac mini M1 - optical Rendu - Topping D90 (original AKM) - Ars Sonum tube integrated - Merlin VSM speakers.
  2. Interesting. The uncorrected measurements of the Wilsons look really good - professional setup? Are these measurements averages across multiple locations closely spaced around the position or do they include off axis measurements?
  3. Hi Miska, Long time satisfied HQplayer user here. I have two questions: 1. Is there an easy way to confirm which convolution filter is actually running during playback- other than clicking into the sub-menu of the client? Especially when using Roon to HQplayer it would be nice for the regular player to indicate whether and which convolution filter is running. 2. Any special filter recs for a topping D90 DAC (AKM4499) for someone who - no matter how many times I try Gauss, Sinc, and other new filters - keeps coming back to poly-sinc-short-minimum phase for rebook (upsampled to 384). Thanks!
  4. Nice review - and nice recommendation on that Esa-Pekka Salonen album. Great sounding. Did you get a chance to specifically evaluate the preamp section of this unit?
  5. They (Wilson) are inching - glacially - towards a semblance of visual symbiosis with human habitats. As soon as they enclose those time-aligned drivers in a single 3D printed sheet of tastefully decorated X-material, I will audition them again. I agree with your assessment of the Wilson sound, which has grabbed my attention going all the back to the Watt / Puppy.
  6. Does anyone know if the Spring 3 with preamp module includes a remote for the analog attenuation?
  7. Nice album. Thanks for the review. As a far less accomplished drummer who also looks like an average dad at a little league game I am honored to be in such company. | "After listening a few times to the album via Qobuz streaming, I purchased the 24 bit / 96 kHz download." Uh-oh. So with a notch hi-fi system circa 2022, the local file STILL sounds better than the equivalent file streamed from Quboz / Tidal? This remains my experience as well - a small but perceivable difference - though I am open to the possibility of expectation bias. Wish there was some way to measure this difference- more difficult to cure a problem that cannot be objectively characterized.
  8. Wow 1991 !!. Just started grad (medical) school that year. Any year with Achtung Baby will be always be special. Wanted to add Live's debut album (not great, but throwing copper was coming), Frazier Chorus Ray, and - if cover albums are allowed - a fantastic tribute to Leonard Cohen - "I'm Your Fan" - his songs sung by REM, Ian McCulloch, Pixes, John Cale, and more.
  9. Just looking at your room correction as have been spending time on this recently. Is that corrected curve consistent by listening position? I am finding substantial measured differences in treble response depending on whether listening in "relaxed" mode - slumped a bit back in the couch - versus sitting up and forward. Also, is there enough bass with this strict bass curve? I needed extra "Harman Curve" bass but do not have nearly the smooth bass response as you. Yours is with no subs? That's impressive.
  10. I have this working on my macmni M1. Spotify outputs to Black Hole and HQ player picks up that stream. However, the switch between other sources (Roon) and the Black Hole stream (Spotify) in HQ player is not seamless. Have to click on the input stream of HQ player a few times, open the HQ player client, close the client... some HQ player crashes... But it does eventually work and once connected works fine (until you want to switch again).
  11. | And why would you do that? Just out of curiosity. Well.. pre-Audirvana studio I was having fun deciding among the many filters, algorithms, and EQ options of HQ player using two diametrically different headphones (Senn 650 and HiFiman 560). But the user interface of HQ player and I remained a poor match even after putting effort into the relationship - both the iPad remote and client remain opaque to me in real-world use. So I rented Roon as a trial but thought it would be nice to marry the interface of Audirvana 3.5, which I previously paid for, with HQ player. Was able to figure out how to route Spotify and internet streaming to HQ player but not Audirvana. Was hoping the new release of Audirvana would include an HQ player output just so I can use the SQ settings I like and the software I purchased, but see that they have gone in an entirely new direction.
  12. Too bad - literally just splurged for HQ player two weeks ago. Though unlikely to have added yet another subscription service to my life. Would assume that the new Audirvana - like the old - cannot link its audio output to HQ player within the same computer?
  13. The timeless conflict between frequency response and sensitivity... and time response. Harbeth goes all in on the former. Agree with suggestion for more current though underlying issue remains relatively low sensitivity and a relatively large room.

Miska helped me with this one - had to select the 44/2 channel option from the URL menu on the main page and then it started working. It works with black hole the same way - and the latter is free. But as far as I can tell, neither will work if the source has different sampling frequencies. So OK for Spotify, internet radio streams, etc.. but not if you want to use a different front end - like Audirvana - to play your own content. Have been diving into the HQ player filters - very interesting. Want to next investigate which - if any - can help streaming Spotify sound better.

Hi, I have tried a number of things to figure this out but cannot seem to solve. Am trying out HQ player desktop on Macmini M1. It sounds fantastic and works fine with Roon. I would like to have the flexibility of sending it Spotify or even Youtube videos. I tried Black Hole and Amoeba Loopback apps but cannot get this to work. The Loopback app menu shows that it is receiving audio from Spotify (at 44k.1 kHz). In HQ player preferences under Input Device Settings I set the Backend to CoreAudio and then choose either Loopback or Black Hole from the device list (whichever I'm trying), then click OK, but no sound. Of note, when I go back to the HQ player preferences menu the input device setting has been reset to "default." Thanks!!!
