  1. Greetings, I need some help trying to get songs into my iTunes library. I currently have my music library ripped to the flac format. I am batch converting those files to the ALAC format for use in iTunes both on Windows and Mac machines. I am replicating the FLAC format file/folder structure in the ALAC format. I then use the iTunes import folder function to get them into the library. Unfortunately every time I run the iTunes folder import function on the root folder that contains the ALAC files I get duplicates in my iTunes library. Of course i could wait until the end of the batch conversion, but the same problem will exist when i rip another CD to FLAC and convert to ALAC. Will you please advise what is the best way to get this done and not get any duplicates in my iTunes library? Thanks DS
  2. Greetings, How long can a USB cable be when connecting to a USB asynch DAC before degradation kicks in? Does it matter? Thanks Darrin
  3. Greetings, I am contemplating a NAS based music server. I have read through the CAPS article and many posts on the site. Does the output from a sound card digital line out to a DAC produce better quality sound than an asynchronous USB DAC? Why would you go through the additional expense and work of using a sound card when you can output via USB to a DAC? If I got a Mac Mini and ran VMware to get a Win7 JRiver MC would I negate the hardware advantages of buying a MAC? Thanks for your input Darrin
  4. Man, I feel your pain! FWIW, as I type I am ripping my library (3000+ CDs) using DBP and I am currently trialing JRM as my library/player software. Like you I decided to have a look at JRM based on Chris' recommendation. I use to use iTunes (drove me crazy!) and Media Monkey (love the performance and the user control, hate the interface) Of the 1500 CDs I have ripped over the last couple of weeks (yes, I am a highly focused person; with no life!) JRM has never been a problem. My current configuration has me ripping to .flac format to a particular folder and JRM auto imports to this folder. All my tagging info is saved in each file as I rip them in DBP. JRM simply imports this info. If JRM can retrieve tagging info I haven't found that feature yet! (I find JRM documentation a little lacking, but then maybe I haven't looked hard enough) JRM seemed to work with little or no configuration other than pointing it to the library folder. A couple of points/Qs -What format are you ripping to? -At what point do you notice the error? (Consider downloading freeware:'MP3Tag' and confirm all your tags are as you expect coming out of DBP) - Are you manually adding tag information? How do you do this? -Is JRM pointing to the root directory of your music folder(s) -I see you are organizing your file according to composer, genre etc. This may be better achieved w/in JRM once you learn how to best use tagging, indexing and searching. Creating complex directory structures SOMETIMES makes it a little harder to recover when things go awry (and they will). Probably not a whole lot of help... I am not an expert. If you try and give a little more detail around the problem and what you are doing others will be able to better assist. I am confident that both these programs are capable of doing what you want its just a matter of experimenting with them to achieve the desired response. Good luck with your quest! Darrin
  5. Chris, thx for the help. I am not sure my set up is exactly as you describe. My server has the media only. I have not installed itunes on the server. I was going install itunes on each client computer and accept the default location of the "iTunes Media Folder" on the local machine. Then uncheck the option to copy files to local machine iTunes media folder when adding to library. Then I would go to "Add to Library" on each client/local machine and add all the music folders that are on the server. Is this the best way to do it? I assume that the "media folder" is the place that houses the iTunes database and the "Library" is the place that house the actual song files. DS
  6. Hi, I am trying to setup itunes to work with my HP Media Server (HPMS). All my music is on the HPMS (600GB approx.) I want to be able to access the songs on all my various desktops, laptops, netbooks, itouch (both WIN & MAC) both wired and wirelessly throughout the house as well as use the Genius mixer/playlist maker from each of the devices. I do not want to copy the entire library on each of the computers My challenge is to figure out how to setup up itunes. What do I do wiht the library setting. Right now each computer 'sees' the HPMS in the 'shared' section of itunes not in the library. With this setup I can't use the Genius feature of itunes. How do I setup itunes in the devices so that the music is in the library and not in the "shared' section? All help appreciated! Darrin
