  1. I see no sign of the UltraHD version being available on Qobuz or any other download site. There seems to be a Proprius "2014 Remaster," but, since it's available in both 24/88 and Redbook, I doubt very much it's the FIM version.
  2. I'm going to make it a little more confusing. I've got the West German Target ripped to hard drive -- unfortunately, the disc itself is in storage, so I can't check the matrix, but I have checked it against the Japan Target that you mention as being one of many from the digital master. Both of them have identical DR figures that differ from both the tape-sourced and digital-sourced CDs you give above. I.G.Y. 3.7/15 Green Flower Street 7.1/16 Ruby Baby 8.4/14 Maxine 6.6/15 New Frontier 6.1/15 The Nightfly 4.1/17 The Goodbye Look 6.4/16 Walk Between Raindrops 5.1/18 Not too sure what to make of this one.
  3. I'm puzzled. You make several comments about extracting the mono and stereo mixes from the Pet Sounds DVD-Audio, and I've never been able to do that successfully. Although there are 24/192 stereo and mono versions on the DVD-Audio side, as can be determined by actually playing the disc, they must be using a unique form of copy-protection, as DVD Audio Extractor seems unable to find them. It only shows two titles on that side of the disc, both of which are the surround mix in 24/96 (apparently, they are in two titles because there were two different video accompaniments for playback). If you extract either in "stereo" mode, you got a stereo folddown of the surround version, which is completely different in instrument placement from the Wilson/Linett stereo mix. The only way I can find to extract stereo and mono mixes from this disc is using the DVD-Video side. In which case, you can find both the stereo and mono mixes in LPCM format (Title 2 is the stereo tracks, while Title 7 is the mono), but only in 24/96 instead of the 24/192 versions somehow hidden beyond DVD Audio Extractor's reach on the DVD-Audio side.
  4. Unfortunately, IMO, "Audiophile Style" makes me immediately think of the old "Audio-Video Interiors" magazine -- as if this forum is really about cool-looking high-end audio in which visual design is prioritized over audio quality.
  5. Thanks! Just pulled the trigger on a 103D. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  6. Well, did a check of the nearest two big-box stores (Best Buy and Fry's). Not only did neither have any BDP-80FDs in stock, they weren't carrying any Pioneer players at all. I know you can still order them from BB online, but I get the feeling they're getting rid of old stock and won't be getting any new ones. Actually, at the moment, I'm thinking of going with a used 103D instead, as I've been using an earlier-generation Oppo quite happily for a number of years. I do have one question: has anyone tried SACD rips with an Oppo 10x that has been modded to be region-free? Does that hack keep it from working, or is SACD ripping unaffected? (Unfortunately, I have a few out-of-region DVDs I want to still be able to play.)
  7. Unless, of course, the people who discovered the backdoor (which I assume are the same people who developed the software) find a similar backdoor in other chips.
  8. Well, after having just plowed through all 66 pages of this thread, I want to make sure I haven't missed something: Is there a single still-in-production, available-new-through-standard-retail-channels player with which this will work? Because (and, again, I'll grant that I might have missed the key bit of information here), it sounds to me like the only players for which this will work are now no longer being made. Which means that, while this is undeniably a big step forward, developments over the seven months since this began have made this alarmingly similar to the position when the PS3 was the only game in town: to begin with, you need to find an out-of-production device and hope the one you get is working properly and doesn't wear out too soon... (And, right now, I'm regretting having opted to go for the tried-and-true 93 over the just-in 103 when I bought my Oppo player. Ironically, if I recall correctly, it was because my video display didn't support HDMI, and the 103 didn't include the 93's component output. So, of course, within a year, I had upgraded to a display that did have HDMI, and I've been using it exclusively since...) At any rate, I already have all my SACDs ripped via PS3, so I find myself debating whether I feel "lucky" enough to hope that it, treated gingerly enough, will last long enough to rip any SACDs I will buy in the future, before the format itself gets replaced in toto by DSD downloads. On the one hand, if I decide to buy a "new" player as a hedge against the PS3 going belly-up, I may spending a lot of money for a second-hand unit that I may wind up never needing. On the other hand, if my PS3 does die sometime in the future, there may no longer be any suitable players available on the used market for love nor money. Who said audiophilia was a relaxing, stress-reducing hobby?
  9. Unfortunately, not very surprising. It's sad how many performers from the "classic era" of good sound are quite happy to make "modern-sounding" compressed-to-death albums now.
  10. Understood. I guess where I'm coming from is that, given that the MFSL costs about twice the price of the download, and requires the hassle of doing a PS3 rip to get on my server, the only rationale for going that direction is if the SACD was clearly better. Given that a) they're both "very good," b) they're "very similar," and c) the download lacks the MoFi's distortion on the first track, I can't really see any reason to go with the SACD, unless it's some sort of audiophile "peer pressure" that holds MoFi to be more "respectable" than HDtracks. ;-) Now, if the SACD had come with a multichannel of the famous unreleased quad mix, it might be a different story...
  11. Yes, I remember that issue coming up at the time. Overall, since the two are "very similar," and the HDtracks lacks the distortion found on the SACD, I read that as meaning that the HDtracks is the preferred version. Would you agree that's the case?
  12. What I'm sure you didn't realize is that this article gets reposted here (and at other music/audio boards) at least a couple of times a year, with the exact same discussion following each time.
  13. To resurrect this thread -- has anyone been able to compare the 24/96 download to the MoFi SACD? Any preference one way or another?
  14. I haven't contacted them yet since I just downloaded the files a few hours before posting the issue, and had just come up with the fix myself.
