  1. Couldn't find any info on this unit's ability to up convert files say from PCM to DSD256 with HQPlayer? For $19K, a nice box with two computers and software, the processing capabilities ought to be pretty powerful.
  2. Have no idea what I'm looking at when it comes to board layout. With respect to "musicality" descriptions, ASR isn't the place for it. Attached link is to a traditional review of the lower powered, earlier Purifi circuit that speaks to sonic impressions, and the reviewer favorably compares it to $40,000/pair amps paired with high quality speakers and front end. https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/opinion/1420-purifi-audios-pint-sized-powerhouses There are other builders that offer Purifi based amps with additional features, like tube input boards and more elegant case work like Apollon, Boxem, Nord, Audiophonics, VTV...and some offer stereo versions. Important to note that each of the Purifi high current units needs its own power supply for it to deliver its full performance, particularly into low impedance loads.
  3. Probably should consider the high current Purify based units like a pair of these: https://www.buckeyeamp.com/shop/p/purifi-1et7040sa-mono-channel-amplifier
  4. Was wondering if new Studios provide any HQP related significant enhancements versus the previously released M2 Minis ?
  5. Hi Jussi - Anything special in new Mac releases with positive impact for HQ Player? Looks like there is a new Studio with new chips. Anything significant versus the M2 Minis?
  6. Spending more than $450 to $1K will not get you better sonics than this: https://apos.audio/products/topping-e70-velvet-desktop-dac-digital-to-analog-convertor?variant=43549274833132&gad=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0wgLRRmFK9nquPS8qhRInSVLqkjmqlJh9fvaa59t8pWrabZBPF7RGEaAqrVEALw_wcB Features DAC chips know for smoothness versus ESS versions. Read one man's impression here, says one might need to spend 9X more to get better sound: https://positive-feedback.com/reviews/hardware-reviews/topping-e70-velvet-dac/
  7. Asked if the Director D to D or the Ref Doc was upsampling/converting...both MSB guys said nope, CD was being played all the way at Redbook. Display showed this as well, which is what made me ask.
  8. Attended the Florida HiFi show this past Sunday, and while I didn't get the chance to hear this DAC in action, did stumble into the MSB room and hear their Reference DAC (two big slabs of aluminum, one for DAC and second for power supply) fed by a D to D called the Director; @$79K of digital front end...and it sounded pretty fantastic, not just a little bit better than some of the other digital that was on display or my Mytek Brooklyn plus. Has anyone heard this set up and the Apex? Have always thought of dCS and MSB as British and US counterparts in the quest for cost is no limitation exploration of this technology. FWIW, the Ref DAC with a pre amp module drove a couple of mono MSB amps that powered some Magico tower speakers...another $100K of gear. Voices floated in the air with they are in the room quality, nuances like fingers on the keys and saxophone valves and drum kit hardware rattling...mesmerizingly good, like live music, my reference. Was also a bit surprised that the neither the D to D nor DAC performed up conversion of the data, which played at CD or SACD resolution on a transport that was an MSB product, but looks to be out of current production. It sure sounded like it was HQPlayered... One additional observation, this was my first HiFi show, been to plenty guitar shows, and I was astounded that so many rooms played music with heavy electronic instruments, massively over-processed percussion and vocals, bass heavy stuff...nothing that would relate to live music played by musicians in a room or stage. Then a couple seemed to be playing movie soundtracks, I guess for the home theater gear. Had to request some piano trio or acoustic guitar music to be able to "hear the gear".
  9. Had a chance to listen to a few systems at the Florida Audio show last weekend here in Tampa. Was at a hotel less than mile from home, which was pretty convenient! Never been to an audio show before, plenty of guitar shows, but no audiophile one. Was intending to check out some speakers, particularly the Perlisten ones that have gotten pretty good reviews. Had also never heard the much reviewed Magico speakers nor the Joseph Audio ones. All very nice in their own way with the Jospeh Pulsar2 Graphenes (whatever the hell that is) sounding like big towers or monitors with big subwoofers and they were small making big, dynamic, 3D music in a decent sized room...like to hear the bigger ones of that line! Happened to see the MSB room and they were playing music I like to listen to when auditioning speakers, acoustic jazz as my reference as musician is live music (many rooms had weird electronic music with over processed vocals or movie soundtracks, which I thought was odd). So I stopped in and was hoping in a kind of perverse way that the sound would be nice but nothing special given the mind numbing pricing of MSB gear. Was disappointed in this regard as the system (Reference DAC with two slabs of aluminum because it has a separate power supply and another slab that was a D to D converter/filter) sounded fantastic and in they are in the room moving around, fingers on the valves and keys noise, drum kit hardware rattle and squeak...everything! The digital source > MSB CD/SACD transport, amps > MSB and speakers > Magico towers. $150K in MSB electronics (not including the transport, which I guess they don't make anymore) about what my best vintage guitar is worth...I'll keep the guitar, for now.
  10. Just reviewed/tested by ASR with strong recommendation, FWIW.
  11. Bought Mac stuff, external HD and other stuff from theses guys: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/external-storage/ssd Lots of options.
  12. What caught my eye was the spec of this amp module's ability to deliver 1,000 watts into 2 ohms. The Orchard Audio amps are lower output/current designs.
  13. The GAN amp in link above looks to be a module, like the Purifi ones. Are there any amp builders who are making amps out of them? Imagine they will need a pretty serious power supply and decent input stage.
  14. For @$1,400 I'd replace the Bryston with one of these: https://boxem-audio.eu/en/stereo-amplifiers/10-164-arthur-4215e2.html#/1-faceplate_color-satin_black/8-body_color-textured_matte_dark_anthracite/9-mains_voltage-180_264v https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/power-amplifier/audiophonics-hpa-s400et-sparkos-edition-stereo-class-d-amplifier-class-d-purifi-2x400w-4-ohm-p-15715.html https://www.marchaudio.com/product/p422-stereo-power-amplifier/?v=7516fd43adaa https://www.nordacoustics.co.uk/product-page/nord-three-se-1et400a-dual-mono-stereo-amp Features and builder location would determine alternative. All of them will outperform the 25 year old, repaired Bryston.
