How many are still using their PonoPlayer?
beetlemania replied to Doug A's topic in DAC - Digital to Analog Conversion
I have a 200 GB SanDisk in my Pono. My wife’s Pono has, I think, 100GB. Both take about that long to boot as the OS scans the library. Not ideal but worth the upgrade over the 60GB internal memory. -
What will be some of your first post lockdown concerts, guys.?
beetlemania replied to sphinxsix's topic in General Forum
Brandi Carlisle coming to SLC in August. Love to see her but she’s playing at a massive arena, so probably pass. Kate Wolf music festival is featuring Bruce Cockburn, Ani Difranco, and Taj Mahal. Outdoor venue so might do that even if COVID is still going. I’ve decided I really want to see Ray LaMontagne or David Gray so will keep an eye for when they get close enough to catch a show. -
Did You Watch Part I of The Beatles: Get Back? What Did You Think?
beetlemania replied to Jud's topic in Music in General
Geez, so complicated 🙃 I cheaped out and bought the standard length version of the Giles Martin remix from HDTracks. I mean, I already own the effing album on LP, cassette, CD, and 24-bit thumb drive 😂 But I see the Glyn Johns mixes on the Qobuz super deluxe. Thanks for the tip. -

Absolutely. I regard Abbey Road as the GOAT rock album. Imagine replacing Maxwells Silver Hammer with All Things Must Pass or Isn’t it a Pity. 🔥 -
Did You Watch Part I of The Beatles: Get Back? What Did You Think?
beetlemania replied to Jud's topic in Music in General
Yes, I did see the tension and it was not fun to watch. Plus, the music pretty well sucked, thus the fast forward. But it looked all repaired in episode 2 with McCartney seeming to support Harrison’s song crafting. The enjoyment of creating together looked genuine and deep. Maybe their “best behavior” was because the cameras were on? And the arguments over business were evident in episode 3, other than the bit about Linda’s dad. Maybe it doesn’t fall apart if Epstein had lived? I would love to hear Beatles versions of stuff like All Things Must Pass and Beware of Darkness. -

Right, I know Martin is the one who brought in strings to so many songs and have read that he helped create some of the new sounds on Sgt Peppers. I was expecting to see more direct involvement. -

I finally watched this series over the weekend. Even as a hardcore Beatles fan, I think this could have been edited down a lot. I fast forwarded several times, especially during episode 1. It was interesting to see the interactions between McCartney and Harrison that led Harrison to quit the band. But otherwise episode 1 was a yawner. Episode 2 was super cool. Fun to see how much they enjoyed working with each other, all the more after Preston joined the effort. Just wild to think they broke up for good just a couple of months later. I was really surprised to see how little a role George Martin played. I need to rethink the amount of credit I’ve given him for the Beatles creativity and sound. It was almost shocking to see how quiet Ringo was, perhaps contributing to the creation of the final sound even less than Martin. And, wow, did they smoke a boatload of cigs! Finally, it was jarring how little the cameras focused on Preston during the rooftop concert. Was it because he was not officially a Beatle or was there some racism going down? -
Article: An Audiophile On Vacation
beetlemania replied to The Computer Audiophile's topic in Article Comments
Oh, how fun! We planned a trip with our adult daughter to Maui and Molokai, April 2020 and . . . welp. Be sure to try snorkeling. Kauai was my first real snorkeling and I immediately fell in love with it. -
Are power conditioners or filters needed?
beetlemania replied to Marcos Mazur's topic in DAC - Digital to Analog Conversion
I added the Ayre L-5 line conditioner to my system ca. 2010. My ears/system/room, it removed a subtle “hash”, produced silent backgrounds. In turn, resolution and intelligibility seemed improved. Worth it to me. YMMV.- 14 replies

@The Computer Audiophile Thanks for the reply. Yes, I wrote that you didn’t write that particular article. But there *are* many Roon articles that you did write. Am I wrong to assume you don’t share the opinion that Roon “sounds terrible”? I get that Roon support might not be top shelf. Roon 1.8 would crash with 24 bit Qobuz files and it took them many weeks to fix it. I even started to remove 24 bit Qobuz from my library before they addressed the issue. I suspect they are understaffed as are many high end companies during this time of uncertainty and chaos and dwindling customer base as the Boomers retire and die while younger generations care not for quality audio. But this thread has drifted from “Roon support related”.

There is a LOT on this website and, especially, forum that I don’t read. But I’m wondering what I missed that you would write this. Over the years you praised Roon and interviewed them earlier this year. You didn’t write this one but it is from a featured article: SOUND QUALITY This one’s the tough one! Both JRMC and Roon sound wonderful, and it’s not easy to choose between them for SQ alone. Curious why you seemed to have soured on Roon. I mean, clearly it’s not that the SQ is “terrible”.
