Chris and gang,
Terrific job on this site. I'm completely new to this but have been reading the site for that past few months and developing a game plan. Just about have all my gear and want to check a few things so that I don't get off on the wrong foot. For background, my IT knowledge / skills are rather modest.
I'm trying to set up two systems (one for a weekend house):
1. Reference system (computer will be main music player of my HT system). All equipment will be in my audio closet so noise is not an issue.
Thecus N5200PRO (USB cable)
Dell Inspiron 546 - Video connected to Pioneer Elite Plasma in theater room
Windows 7 Home Premium
J. River (possibly Media Monkey - see below)
Lynx AES 16 (XLR cable)
Berkeley Alpha DAC (XLR cable)
Classe SSP-600 pre (XLR cable)
Krell Theater Amp Standard
Audio Physic Virgo Speakers
i) What settings and/or add-ons do I need to get bit perfect playback? I keep reading about ASIO, WaveOut and WASAPI but I don't know what these are and the necessary changes seem to vary by OS. This is where I need to most help and any assistance here would be much appreciated.
ii) I plan to use J. River and attach a WMC based RF wireless remote in conjunction with the Pioneer screen (since the Dell will be in audio closet). Is this something that would work as I haven't seen any other posts about this? Is WMC something I should avoid (not sure if it affects sound quality or if J. River + remote does not even need it). I actually prefer Media Monkey but would have a remote issue.
iii) Any hardware suggestions or observations would be welcomed. So far as I can tell, it should work (but it's not set up yet).
2. Mid-fi system
Seagate HD (wireless)
Apple MacBook
Itunes (wireless)
Airport Express (Toslink)
Benchmark DAC1 (coax)
B&K Ref. 30 pre (coax)
Bryston 9BST amp
Sonus Faber Concertinos
I plan to rip / download all files to my Thecus and then copy them over to the Seagate HD for other system. BTW, my wife is a Mac and I'm a PC and hence the mismatch in computer equipment. Unfortunately, this cannot be changed.
iv) What file format (if I don't want to convert files) would work best will both systems? I was thinking of using .wav files. The second system does not need to be bit perfect. J. River and I-Tunes both seem to play .wav files fine.
Thanks for any advice. This site is an amazing tool for someone getting started (although it's given me migraines with everything I've been trying to keep straight).
