  1. I have a Stello U3 coming. I'm currently using a Weiss AF1 with the DAC8. I'm curious how the newer XMOS technology compares to the Weiss.
  2. Is it safe to say a vinyl version of an album (old original or new remastered) won't be a victim of the loudness wars (compressed and clipped) ?
  3. rom661, Thanks for clarifying. As-soon-as I get some more bass in the room (thinking of adding a Rel B3 to the ProAc's), I'll have to unplug the Dac8 from the IsoTek mini Sub. -michael
  4. Did I miss something, is the DAC8 stock power cable something special? I not sure I even looked at it. Out of habit I threw it in the stock power cord bucket and plugged in a Furutech Evo II.
  5. Erwin, my 125 albums pale in comparison to your 2,215 albums, and I couldn't even estimate the combined listening hours of the contributors to this thread let alone the forum, so I believe this is a great place to get advice for building a music library. BTW thanks for your contributions. Blownsi, I would agree AC/DC - Back in Black can sound compressed. It scores an 8 on the Dynamic Range Meter, but Red Hot Chili Pepper's - Blood Sugar Sex Magik sounds good to me and scores a 14 on the DR Meter. I attached an example of the DR Scale and the meter readings for three albums. Here's the url for the database http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/. Here's what I've added so far; Jazz At the Pawnshop The Who - Who'e Next AC/DC - Back in Black Guns'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction Perl Jam - 10
  6. Thanks everyone, keep the lists coming. I added a few to my collection today while I was out Christmas shopping, I need a little more Rock Appetite for Destruction - Guns'n Roses Back in Black - AC/DC they were out of Pearl Jam 10 and didn't have Who's Next, and it looks like Antiphone Blues might take a little internet searching.
  7. jackrinse, That is the same tube I'm using. Sorry I can't help with the sample rate issue, I setup the Havana to run 44/16 through the Legato.
  8. Jackrinse, you may also want to look into using an USB to SPDIF converter. I have a system running the Havana fed from a Legato USB to BNC converter, the converter uses Gordon Rankin's Streamlenght asynchronous code. The Legato only operates at 44.1 kHz, but then the Havana is a NOS dac. I believe the combo sounds great. Also, I believe upgrading the tube in the Havana I makes a positive difference.
  9. Time to take a break from purchasing equipment and to start building a music library. So what is your opinion on the 10 cd's/album's that every music library must have.
  10. The Legato is an asynchronous converter with it's own power supply and comes with a BNC cable. If you want solid state move down the MHDT line to the Constantine+ ($399) or you can move up the MHDT line to the tube based Havana ($854). All three DAC's are non-oversampling and the Legato only operates at 44.1 kHz, so if you want HiRes this doesn't work. I have a system using the Havana and love the music: Macbook --> Legato --> Havana --> Leben CS300xs.
  11. like the Weiss AFI1. As an example, Mac (firewire) -->(firewire) Weiss AFI1(AES) --> (AES) DAC and the DAC work clock out (BNC) is connected to the AFI1 word clock in (BNC). Does the whole chain synchronize from the DAC back to the Mac, or does the firewire connection run asynchronous and the AES connection run synchronous while the AFI1 buffers data?
  12. I checked with Esoteric in March and they confirm their dual mode accepts 44.1. Here's their response; "The D-05 will accept 44.1 kHz on the "Dual" XLR input setting. If it is receiving a dual XLR data stream, the left and right channels are separated into XLR1 and XLR2 inputs. In other words, If the output device is set to "DUAL" and the D-05 is changed to "XLR1", you will only get left channel data, the right channel will be missing completely. Switch to "XLR2" and you will only get the right channel. If the output device is a single XLR, then that XLR is sending a stereo signal. If you set the D-05 to Dual, you will get a stereo image at 44.1 kHz. " -michael
  13. I also believe Mani is correct. I have a Weiss AF1 connected to an Esoteric D-05 using Dual AES cables. With sample rates below 176, the AF1 auto switches to single mode. When this happens I need to manually switch from Dual mode to XLR1 on the Esoteric, otherwise all I hear is the left channel. I asked Daniel via email about this and he informed me the Dual XLR standard is for 176 and up and that the AF1 is operating per the standard. I'm sure that is correct, but when I queried the Esoteric folks, they informed me the D-05 will accept 44.1 on the Dual XLR input setting. They explained when the D-05 is receiving a dual XLR data stream the left and right channels are separated into XLR1 and XLR2 inputs, hence the reason it doesn't auto switch from Dual to XLR1 mode. I don't know, but maybe your Chord operates in the same fashion. If so, no additional cable needed, just a manual switch from Dual AES to Single AES mode- however that is done on the Chord. I agree it would be nice if the Weiss interfaces sent all sample rates in Dual mode, than I won't have to get out of my chair
  14. You may also want to audition the Weiss DAC2, I think the retail price is $400 more than the QB-9 and it's Firewire not USB.
  15. If your DAC budget is limited to a $1000 or under, you might want to try the Wavelength Proton (Async USB). In my office I have a MacPro and entry level NAD/PSB setup. I didn't a/b the Proton and DLIII because the DLIII was already on it's way back, but my memory likes the Proton better. I don't have a soundcard in the MacPro so I only tried the DLIII via USB.
