1. O(OOps. My deepest apologies…. Sorry I missed a more timely reply as my subscription button apparently is/was off for this thread… Huh. I thought it was automatic. 2.5 drives only in the 413J? I thought I read it used only 2.5 TB drives… not the smaller notebook drives… keeping it at 10TB overall internally. And it has only 2.0 USB for external storage add on’s. Otherwise, and besides software on board, I thought it too had hot swap capabilities. Hmmm. I noticed too, the step above the entry level 413J, the “413”., has better connectiveity and thru put with 3.0 USB and ESATA interfaces for outboard storage along with it’s Gig a GBit interface. It’s DC CPU seems marginally faster than the J’s 1.67GHz, if Dual core means effectively two CPU of the same speed. Doubling the RAM sure is a better notion though. Guess I’m showing my shallow pocket syndrome again… griping about the higher cost of the standard version, versus the entry level “J”. version. It hurts to pay the added $125 for the 413, but the added thru put, RAM, and I believe more media software ability and greater storage via 3TB or 4TB drives suits the price diff fairly well. The idea of surveillance camera attachment is attractive too. I’ve had issues this past year with need of such an option but haven’t followed up on it due to it’s expense. Maybe now… ?? I sure hope a 413 will run on just one drive at first.. a 3TB. Looking at drive costs lately, and I thought they had dropped severely, the 4TB models are astonishing me with their expense. Wow. Hopefully, I’ll manage to insert two 3TBs right off… then trickle them down to it’s outboard interfaces…. Hopefully. Q: Can anyone say for certain if the TOTAL RATED STORAGE CAPACITY for any of the DS413 Synology units being discussed herein mean INTERNALLY, or OVERALL? I’m betting the rated cap is for an internal application…. And NOT an overall total. Q: What Raid setup is working for your Synology? The Synology Hybrid? Thanks much.. Guess I'll order the DS413.
 2. I’m ready to buy a large (-er) NAS. I’m thinking Synology but not sure as to which one. The PLUS models seem like overkill to me and they have features I’ll never ever use I don’t think. And the above units, the 413J entry level, or home user, and the 413 seems pricewise to fit into my budget. I thought the 411 SLIM would do, but I don’t think it comes with the media software these other units have. Any thoughts on which to go with or other notions at this point are tremendously appreciated… and I’ve got to pull the trigger on this ASAP. I’m seeking a not too difficult gizmo to operate/setup, and something which I can insert drives of unequal value at will into, and of course, reliability. It will not be running 24/7…. But as needed…. I’m fairly sure. I’m looking to spend between $300 - $500 (or less) for the storage unit, and then add drives as I’m able. Probably get two 3TB units to begin with. I store lossless music, and both compressed & uncompressed ripped DVDs. At 5GB on avg. movies suck up space quick. Even converted to MKV they’re around 1 – 1.5 GB with uncompressed audio. The plan is to be able to stream music and movies from this storage unit to various PCs & or Blu Ray players (oppo & Panasonic) then into HT systems. My most sincere thanks for all input.
 3. my bad... what about the article written by Chris on how to rip Blu Rays & hd dvds.... i guess we ought to have him delete it, huh? FYI.... DVDFAB's DVD Ripper. FYI.... Avoid DVD Clone 9 entirely. there's more to life than merely music... as important as music may well be, it's not the end all be all. BTW... ever heard of Concert or Musical Performance Videos/DVD/Blu Rays? personally, I like to watch concert videos from time to time.... where ever I am. I figured I wasn't alone in that affliction. Perhaps I am.
 4. I’m stumped! Using JRiver MC 17 latest ver… All of my video playback on my PC is just fine but it comes across upside down and backwards! It’s inverted completely as if maybe… just maybe it was set for a PJ or something. It’s killing me. DVDs, video files… etc. all develop the image itself reversed and upside down…. Why? Power DVD doesn’t do it playing the same files on the same machine. Is there some setting I need to check or uncheck somewhere? For the person who solves this issue, I’ll put them into my will. Many many thanks,
 5. It’s always good to see how helpful folks can be online. Always willing to share their exp with others to save those others some time and money, or merely mediate some frustration for another member. Soooo, no one here rips or converts DVDs to other formats huh? Is it because no one knows how? Must be. …..and the folks at CA seem to be asleep.. or ignorant on this particular topic. Sheessshhh.
 6. C'mon man! How about some input here on decent software which will rip and or convert ripped DVDs to other image formats. This is a computer oriented website isn't it? Info here showed how to rip Blu Rays, DVD audio & HD DVD.... so now is no time to be shy or reclusive on this topic. Or is it no one but DChris knows about such things? Sure would appreciate some help. Thanks for any help. Very much so.
 7. Hello all. I've been using 1 Click and DVD 43 as ripper and decrypter for archiving and duplicating my DVD library. that combo turns all ripped files into Video TS and VOB, and a few other sorts all in one or more sub folders... The problem with this approach is I can only play these files back using Power DVD, or an older WMP version and on my PCs. No DLNA device I've yet tried will play them. These DLNA devices do however play AVI, DIVIX and other assorted formats. Consequently, I'm in the hunt for a quality result from a simple to use software converter and ripper/burning application. What are you using for this concept? Price isn't so much the thing as is it's simplicity of use and having an optimum final product. many Thanks... j
 8. ...from Paul Allen's Tech TV years ago. "The Screen Savers"... 90 mins of all you ever wanted to know about PCs and then some.. tweaks.. apps.. some Mac stuff too. Eventually it fell away and that channel now is all about Gaming. G Force I think they call it.

I don't watch G Force network.

Thanks for the heads up on the Leo network podcasts. I'll definitely do them ASAP.
 9. Pandora... or do Pandora alone wherein you can choose your fav artists and Pandora mixes in similar but different musicians.

But you are right.. quality will keep suffering along... although, given these notes here about online storage, it seems it's not the space that is pittiful, but the thruput, and mastering accessibility of OEM masters, and their final mixes.

Whenever the major lables and that is where the focus should be aimed at, Sony, BMG, etc., open their eyes to simply enabling what they already have on tap for use in streaming content or downloads.... it's gonna be the same old, a bit better than FM maybe, as the commercials are less frequent online.

Why the major labels don't take advantage of their hi res masters being privy to the buying public astonishes me routinely.

Talk about another revenue stream just waiting to be exploited? C'mon! Stack 'em up, and serve 'em out!

sheeesshhh.
 10. Paul, thanks for the kind words

I agree we can always disagree... on anything. That's what mature, intelligent, self motivated audio nuts do.... albeit not usually without flames or passion, and sometimes without any notion of political correctness. The latter currently causes me enough irritation to reach for the Pepto. I've had my fill of the stayed, hypocritical and superficial posturing so many avow as a social platitude. I could just retch.

I’d be more than remiss too if I did not congratulate Chris for yet another insightful discertation of modern man seeking an esier softer route to selfish concerns. Enlightening. Thanks Chris. I would personally never have known about such matters and am glad to become apprised regardless my own sentiments on the subject.. it is a sincere effort and I congratulate you for it. Really.

Audio nuts IMO are and will remain the middle children at best, and often they are dismissed far too handily, and as well, quite poorly treated on occasion... even by the vendors we subscribe to!

If economics has a lot to do with this new cyber range fire, and it likely do, please remember the Golden rule!

He who has the Gold... rules.

Owning the digital acreage and it's apparent abundance or pittance per square yard doesn't mean it translates to that value being streamed along to those who would have it so…. Or in other words… ‘us’.

This is how $$$$ are made. Think about Andrew Carnegie. The steel magnate. His efforts drove down the cost of steel far below it's then selling price, but he out produced everyone else, becoming 'THE' primary source for steel.... in the world! he therefore could call the shots as he deemed fit.

Likewise when America became the worlds top producer of oil! It was at $3 per barrel. During the Texas oil boom in the early 1900s, the price dove to mere pennies per barrel.

Although the prices in vastly diferent markets were forced to receed initially, the entire of the globe was altered. The fashion and methods previously routine, were vacated and the new princes of these industries were able to demand eventually their own terms to those who were now on board with these industrial giants, and commercial avenues affecting their lives. Albeit in a far more positive manner than remote storage and immediate access of mere data. This resource is available now to anyone who owns both a laptop and a desktop… or stores data redundancy online.

This new ‘let us rent back to you, your own stuff’ approach is the height of mindless self serving idiocyncratic logic. But it will generate cash flow. Substantial cash flows I’m sure.

What statement does that make about us?

The most major and duly considered difference from a century ago to today is much simpler a discovery. It’s us.

Indeed it is our own society. People. Innovations, new technologies, and a vanishing geography which forces us to live on top of one another strangles any iota of innocence away from us. Cultural changes have redesigned us all . our values primarily, and our concerns for security, privacy, and we now are more an isolated people. A considerably different atmosphere lays heavily on us all in our present age.

Doors which were left unlocked are locked today. Streets that were once safe and familiar are no longer. Children that used to walk to their schools or stops alone, now require chaperones, and guards. Even Halloween wears a mask that can cause grave concerns.

These current business trends of predatory practices veer wildly away from the benefits, donations and contributions a former age of people have provided to us all. As time erodes mountains, ceaseless selfish concerns for immediacy have eroded ourselves, our vision, and our ability to grow towards a more enlighten mankind.

what can be quite attractive initially can turn out to be something else in due course. Something drastically poor in concept and deed. Especially if it goes without scrutiny. Certianly if it is allowed to be a negative draw on resources, versus a contribution to them, or a replenishment for them Renting cyber acreage once appropriate redundancy is attained, is superfluous. Laughable. Serves little and solves little more.

I find it quite doubtful and definitely dubious, to entertain the vendors of these online 'you store it you lock it and you keep the key to it' affairs are happily eyeing any subscribers with Terra Bit lossless content huge file type aficionados and their voluminous libraries.

Rather, their looking towards the ipod plug & play crowd as that sectors buying dollars control both the majority and electoral college votes… in every state in America, and now, the the world.

The devoted and enthusiastic audio hobbyist will continue to be left out in the cold. Ignored and disenfranchised as the world moves on merrily without him. He and she, stalwart in their own affairs, diligent, and erstwhile, are the enigmas of modern times. Those perverse souls who aspire to honesty and purity in the content which sets their hearts afire and lifts them aloft. Yep. We’re the duckbill platypuses. The Doe Doe of the 21st century. The curious side dish, never the entre.

Our major problem? Past the we’re really nuts, bit?? Democracy.

The world has gleaned one thing from the democratic ideal… if nothing else… the ayes have it! Or, the majority of the buying demographic gets favored and intended treatment, first and foremost.

Watch as these cyber streaming lockers, explode on the scene right off, but are absorbed, dwindle, and are summarily extinguished in due course.

I thinkit’s just another hoola hoop. The presence will linger on a mite longer than the big round tubes, given the sheer vastness of the numbers of possible clientele, but the fire will soon become embers People will figure out eventually, they can do this for themselves and at much less cost.

The Bose crowd are a target I suspect. They are into a less personal, and uninvolved approach to entertainment where content reigns. A place where quality and effort are less than after thoughts. People aren’t people any more…. And the term ‘user’ has acquired an anonymous but ever present dread when it is thought of.

The times they are a changin’…. Too true Bob. Way too true.

Would have been nice were it all for the better… and much has been for the better, but it’s time to start ripping open the curtains, and peering straight into the face of ‘what’s really back there’…. And at ourselves.

Global warming? Too bad.. but look! There’s a Terra bit iPod!

Religious Gihads terrorizing the worlds population indiscriminately? Hey, how about those new 3D Tv’s?

Sweat shops and enormous hikes for medicine as our health is being ransomed back to us? Gee… Check this out! I can stream Netflix on my Who-zit!

We’ve gone from being the worlds richest country, where manufacturing saw no peer, to being one of it’s largest debtors and one that shoves it’s production onto distant shores. Oil manufacturers hike up the price on fuel at alarming rates and then reduce it partly back down to appease us while the end result is an unconscionable and unjustified rate increase, the world over.

But it’s OK… Look! I can stash my music files online and pay for the privilege to surround myself with my very own music where ever I go!

Wow… Lucky me. This took way more thinking than the Mu-sak fella ever came up with… but it took a lot of listening to Mu-sak to muddle enough minds so much so, they would not see this new tact for acquiring their hard earned $$$ as anything more than fun or a necessity. It isn’t and it isn’t.

Now and then there’s a lemming that doesn’t leap off the cliff with the rest of the herd.
11.
some web service on a pay per storage/time/event, via a cell phone, or smart phone…. But I just don’t get it.

I often wonder why? And, just how smart is that practice?

There is a time and place for everything.

I believe it is true.

Can-Heads can have their cake and hear it too by carrying along only a small notebook size case which includes a HP dac/amp, HPs, and a HDD.

A fair sized laptop bag could fit into an overnight bag or surely a backpack, with quality active speakers, and a laptop with a 1TB drive, loaded with music and flicks too!

2500 CDs fit onto a 1TB drive in lossless formatting.

BTW… my HDD charges me nothing for this and will go wherever I want it to go.

Were I to drive? Plug in my iPod to the car’s audio system! Again, no charge!

Truth be told, if I’m going to pay for storage or subscribe to hear my own stuff at my very whim… I believe I’d care to pay to hear something I DON’T OWN INSTEAD.

Pandora comes to mind.

Vudu sells a brand new Blu Ray movie! Well, virtually anyways, you can watch it as often as you like via their site… as you get no hard copy sent to you… and oh yeah… from anywhere! Anywhere there’s a pc or a Mac you can log on with! Oh, and you have the priviledge to pay full retail too!

I suppose there are reasons why anyone needs constant contact with entertainment, although I feel it a spin off from the addicted to texting, smart phone apps, etc., than it is anything else. It underlines the overt need for immediacy our culture THRIVES UPON.

Exactly how meaningful a relationship does one then have with listening to music? Having my fav music on all the time, wherever, and whenever, would lessen my appreciation for it, and could undermine or distract my attention to where it should be… my work.. my family.. my friends… my ability to further safe driving practices… etc.

Isn’t that why we quit listening to AM/FM radio? Didn’t they just play our favs to death?

On construction sites I recall boom boxes being allowed from time to time… but no one listens to them, except maybe during lunch. Not if you want to keep your fingers, or framing nails out of your boots.

If music is your ally at work. your tunes are on tap and you’re taking out time for digging them… deduct that time from your paycheck on payday. Unless you’ve made some arrangement with the employer you can devote your attention to outside things while on the clock.

Casual music is abundantly prevalent, at every location. When I have developed the absolute need, or perceived desire for editorializing playlists for all of my life activities, and must be surrounded by it at all times… I’m figuring something is dreadfully wrong with me.

Whatever the initial motive is within this endeavor, I’d say it likely is not the prime mover in truth, and only a smoke screen foor the actual instigator… quite probably it is my own ego, or some insecurity manifesting itself.

I want what I want, when I want it.. and I will because I can. Purely childish behavior.

Keeping music special, devoting special times for listening to the new disc or download… Well, now that has considerably more merit and continues my musical appreciation in a higher regard.

It seems the more material and electronic conveniences bestowed upon us, the more we want of them, and there lies a darker truth. An eroding of our social strata. A lessening of our own tolerance and paitience levels. It lends itself too an undermining of our moral fiber as well. For us to side step traditions and their inherent charms and take the fast track to gratification at each and every turn, leads to a dismal and sordid destination.

TIVO lifestyles have virtually implanted surgical blinders to our focus and our vision as human beings, and aids the reduction of our society to merely becoming human doings, and little else.

Loving anything intimates an appreciation for it, not an unrelenting need for it’s presence .

When one can’t do without a thing… isn’t that a dependency? An addiction?

I’ll continue to appreciate and adore music, but I’ll not strive for co-dependency. I don’t feel I’m that crazy just yet. A couple more years perhaps.

I’m actually looking forward to senility so I can cary my complete musical collection anywhere, and anytime on one CD!

Well, it works for Goldfish!

Lastly, I’ve enough exposure of my personal info online as it is… so one has to think about security too. Not just the venues access and security, but your own. It appears more and more these media giants, are more concerned with gaining subscribers than they are with protecting them! The list grows daily as to which website has been compromised. Meaning? You are compromised.

A simple matter of paitience severely limits your own exposure with online music storage sites. It’s free too requiring only a pinch of fortitude.

Such a deal!
12. ...and come housed in really big boxes surrounded by tuners, switches, interfaces, etc. and get called processors.... but 90% of what they do goes thru the on board DACs.

The funny part of this is right off the bat, Chris said this should not be considered a review fo the Marantz proc... in his first paragraph.

how one can not preview this article without drawing some ideas from it as a review of sorts however does strike me as being funny given the statement opposing that notion early on.

Maybe it's just a spec sheet check for errors, and on the spot config setups.

Whatever the case it actually is... it has revealed some important items.

OK to Good was the subjective quantiziation of the sound quality, as stand alone, or fed by outside sources.

So buy one or don't. Wait and see for more Networking and streaming solutions, or scoot on n and dig this bill of fare.

All in all... for $1500 cold hard U.S. duckets.... wadda ya want?

I've spent half that much on my proc and don't use it for any extraordinary decoding of streaming audio or video... and am well pleased.

Facts are so far from my perspective, none of these DLNA passports are ready for every file... every bit rate ... or prime time.

So let the personal confusers do what they do best, and maybe someday the home theater processor will indeed be a home theater processor which can process all aspects of home entertainment.

Even Computer Audionuts, own stuff besides their confusers... and if I see a couple things that are not connected I like to connect them, when feasable....just to see what's up.
13.
So far, all my rips of DVD as archival info are direct to the on board hard drive… IF I feel it is a ‘Keeper’ (7/10 or above rating) I’ll copy it to another drive, likely a NAS so any machine can access the file. Unless it’s a BR disc. I’ve not yet found a suitable method for copying BR formats…. Nor will I likely bother to.

All the machines I have but one, use Cyberlink. The laptop uses a combination of either Windows Media, or JR MC 15. Depends primarily on which one likes the copied content. I say it that way as sometimes despite the decryptor the software can be stubborn.

90% of the time, playing movies I’ve placed onto the NAS work fine… wirelessly, or by Ethernet. Once in a great while I get a error message indicating the dVD is the wrong region …. I don’t use zoned material outside of my region. Ever.

So that flag is erroneous. Albeit, playback is refused.

My real ire comes from the DLNA declaration on some appliances that simply do not support TS or VOB files per se… and want one to convert them into avi, Divix, wkv, etc or some other format… and have them on a particular formatted disc… FAT; FAT 32; and just lately, NTFS.

Archiving DVDs for my purposes is an exemplary method for cataloging and selecting films for playback. Playing these films back on my Panic sonic TCP 50C2 720p Plasma, I’ll use my oldest pc with the aTI Radion 1.3 HDMI card, which oddly enough I can not elicit Blu Ray playback from although I have a very recent Plextor BR drive installed…. That issue seems to revolve around the Cyberlink software which of it’s own accord says some issues exist in the environment preventing BR playback… although each reported instance of non compliance can be refuted properly. So.. all the hardware and so forth meet or exceed the DHCP standards, but the software says “Sorry… No dice!” as it does with errant or untrue flags in other instances.

Amazing.

So SD DVD playback off my personal confusers is all I can expect currently. No Blu Ray. I’ve given up on achievinfg BR replay from a confuser… within or out of, it’s environment.

I’ve given up on DLNA too other than streaming online video and audio from joints like Slacker, VuDu, Netflix, and a couple others.

All of which, I must often administrate via a desktop or laptop then select from the OSD presented by the display. Otherwise, go set up the queue by pc, and then merely pick from the existing lists as shown by the player on the plasma display. Naturally these measures are the result of my own personal physical challenges and not the limitations of the hardware.

Lately I’ll merely view what ever content over or off of my comfusers. I won’t bother to fire up the projector and main rig for sure or even the second system… if it’s just me …. It’s too much bother and and a waste of energy.

Such is life in a world where people reside on the bleeding edge of technology…. It is frought with pittfalls. Blazing new cyber trails one can indeed, wind up with a butt full of arrows.
14. Couple things right off… what is your definition of High Res files? Up to 24/96? Up to 24/192? Or anything over 16/44?

Mac interfaces with anything are not my particular slice of cake…. I understand they have an Optical out jack. TOS. How much info can be streamed or passed via that interface I suspect in part at least depends on the software being used, and the OS to some extent…. But don’t quote me on that.

I’m a Windows owner only… so far.

I’ve found regardless the bridge, USB ASIO driver, etc., the better the signal which can be transmitted, the better the audio. USB 2.0 has it’s limitations without a bridge or converter in the mix. 24/96 I believe is that limit… straight from pc to DAC via just a wire. Some DACs do not enable bit depths and smapling rates above 16/48 on their USB interfaces… this is rapidly changing though so do look into it on which ever unit you think you like going in.

IMHO… on the gear I’ve owned outright in my home… AES/EBU or xlr seems so far as the top nut in the high fidelity rodeo. BNC is right there too… then RCA, and thereafter TOS and USB.. again… IMHO.

so if you aim to do all the rates up to and including 24/192... a card might be needed to passs those higher rates out of your confuser.

The BC D3.5 MSRP = $3500…. Likely one can better that figure.

I’d investigate one more thing however on the BC side of the coin… your output impeadance of your phon preamp… as the input imp of the DAC 3.5 is 12K I think and it’s not a phono preamp per se either.

I’m thinking this set of RCAs are intended for PASS THRU HT duties… not as an phono pre, or analog pre as a matter of course.

I’m also very very lucky to have a quite special line stage active preamp. Every source I’ve connected to it so far, and every amp I’ve connected to it so far the quality of the audio was improved upon… and often dramatically…. But always the audio gains. Upstream and down.

So utilizing any DAC as a preamp is just a bit of fun for a short time to see another perspective on the music. I always revert back to using my Thor MK II preamp with NOS tubes.

Otherwise, as Chris said in his article, the BC dacs are virtually plug & play items, … and do remember too… in the 3.5 BC dropped the USB connection… and put a Glass Optical in it’s place. Glass opt is indeed different from standard optical as the connectors are slightly different… but it has the other TOS so you should be able to get going immediately.
15.
Until Some serious consolidation and considerations on some chosen formats occurs, the industry will stumble along offering semi solutions… here and there… now and then.

A meeting of the manufacturing minds MUST take place. Plain and simple.

I archive my DVDs with 1 click Copy Pro. And DVD43. The resultant file types are the Video and Audio TS, and ‘Vobs’.

No so called DLNA appliance I have tried so far will replay these file types. These are native file types already on and imbedded into the DVD disc itself.

Why must these native files be converted and/or compressed, at all?

Cyberlink usually will play them back… I’ve mixed results with JR MC 15 playing them. I’m not real fond of the JR MC interface during video playback in terms of operation. … Cyberlink enables direct key access to DVD on hard drive or disc operations.

Some users have mentioned Divix and ‘Wkp’ ?? and some AVI video files were successfully replayed over these BR disc players which stream video and are DLNA labled…

Not having on hand, nor wishing actually, to convert or compress my DVD on hard drive titles, I’ve been unable to have those experiences first hand.

With a couple hundred movies uncompressed already on a NAS drive, I’m probably not going to want to do a whole lot of converting either.
