  1. Yes, been done before. See: https://www.jackvandijk.nl/hifi_review.php?Id=206&fbclid=IwAR0jrboV8w0WsXGp-uUTQqgLGvaY9U5lQnpC9uidXq2weQ4FPdI2J4aGGJw On the Facebook Melco Users Group (above blogger is also a member there), there are others who have swapped for 2 x 5TB (appears that the 5TB HDDs were from Melco but no further details were provided). The loss of warranty is unavoidable but that may depend on your dealer. As for SQ, some say that different HDDs / SSDs sound better. Hard to say until you try.
  2. @ flkin, thank you for sharing this. I am using the Melco N1ZH at the moment but have always been curious about Pink Faun (as well as the Innous servers). As you have mentioned, they have an individualistic, sometimes unusual approach to issues but appear, to me at least, to have done it methodically. Besides the Trifecta and those that you have listed, what other "high end" servers have you tried?
  3. Thanks. Do you measure before using the Zeros PEQ? Might try Acourate but that requires another box (PC server) and cables...
  4. Am using the same speakers. Very flexible and useful. A 2dB cut at 30 Hz hinged at 100 Hz helps to tame excessive bass. Have you tried any microphone based DRC with it?
  5. +1. When the Atlantic was launched, it was declared that there would not be any options/upgrades available for it. And now, there's the bells and whistles Golden Atlantic. It's all good for one who is patient and is willing to wait for the final iteration before buying. Buy too early and you need to send it back for upgrades.
  6. Do you prefer no upsampling or oversampling?
  7. On WBF, MikeLavigne compared the Aqua Formula, Nagra HD and Lampi Golden Gate using the SGM server and HQP. The Aqua Formula was preferred in the end. If its not against the forum rules, http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?22299-GG-Nagra-HD-Aqua-Formula-and-SGM-server Wonder how close the La Scala is to the performance of the Formula?
  8. Joe, wait for the Melco series 2, which has been introduced in Japan, where it is marketed under Dela. See https://www.dela-audio.com/2016/09/30/n1-新ラインアップ発表/
  9. Thanks, newton. Good to hear from an actual owner. What else did you listen to before making the move from the La Scala II to the Formula? Could the fact that the Formula uses a SS output stage instead of the tube/MOSFet in the La Scala account for the difference in the sound? The Formula, of course, has a better implementation (and apparently better quality resistors) of the R2R ladder compared to the La Scala II (Optologic). Not sure if the Telefunken NOS ECC81 are now standard but they are not too expensive at Eur84 per matched pair - http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/de/shop_Sonstige_Markenroehren_Vorstufenroehren_Doppeltrioden/ECC81_Telefunken_RFT_NOS_4493
  10. Thanks, BJP691. I was able to get a good grasp of what you experienced with the various DACs. Like you, I expected much from the Devialet 400 and PS Audio but was struggling with what I heard.
  11. Thank you for thoughts, which was one of the views that led me to choose the SU-1 over the Mutec MC3+ USB, as well as the fact that the SU-1 does output I2S. It is interesting to note how different the SU-1 sounds via its SPDIF and AES/EBU outputs. Through the AES, the sound is a bit more "airy" and spacious but less defined, with perhaps a slightly smoother sound. Bass appears to go deeper and with more bloom but less impact. Via SPDIF, the sound has more focus and is more detailed and resolved, with better definition, especially in the bass, with a slightly punchier mid-bass. The "wood" sound of string instruments is also clearer and more sustained, with string vibratos wood being more defined too. The "sheen" of bowed strings is more obvious without quite tipping to being strident. With the AES, the overtones/harmonics are slightly diminished. Given that AES/EBU is supposed to be the better option, I was quite surprised at this finding, but I suppose it is all system dependent. Digital cables used were the DH Labs D-750 and D-110.
  12. Thanks, Kimo, for your thoughts. The La Scala seems to fly under the radar but has been very well regarded by those who have heard it, including reviewers. Have you heard from Aqua as to how the implementation of the Optologic R2R in the La Scala differs from that in the Formula. The 6moons preview gives some hints but not quite enough detail. I am wondering if you have heard other DACs like the Chord DAVE, TotalDac or the Ayre Qx-5 Twenty?
  13. Read somewhere that a Golden Atlantic is rumoured to be in the works.
  14. Reading between the lines, it appears that he is saying that it is better, but whether the incremental difference is worth the additional $8000+ is up to the individual listener. Michael's statement, "I very seriously doubt that anyone who spends real time with the Ayre will feel regret" is interesting. Would there be regret with the D1-Six? Who knows? Btw, I understand that the D1-Four is out - similarly priced as the D1-Dual.
  15. Thank you for sharing this. Very helpful. I was wondering about the possibility of going direct too, should I get the QX5/20 in future. Did you ever have a chance to compare the AX-5/20 vs the KX-5/20 + VX-5/20?
