1. Another point that I have not seen brought up is that the S/PDIF output being used by the coax cable directly from the computer may be very limited in its ability to reproduce anything more than a 44.1/16 signal. A lot of laptops max out at 48/16 whereas a lot of USB to S/PDIF converters will max out at 24/96. Just a thought. Chuck
 2. Thanks, Chris!

This might be promising after all. I appreciate it.

Chuck
 3. "Hi Chuck - The best way I know to accomplish this requires a computer on and connected to your NAS. I use Asset UPnP on a PC with my files stored on a NAS. Playback isn't the issue, it's metadata support as you likely know." Agreed, but I am really trying to get it done without a computer at all. If I could use only flac files I would have it done easily, but right now I need to use AIFF files for my above 96K music selections with the PWD. Eventually this will work with flac files all the way up to 192K but while the software is being worked out, aiff files are a workaround. I also have an 8TB linux server that holds movies, music, photos, etc. and I have been 'demoing' various DLNA/uPNP servers on that to no avail. I have found that just because something says it is DLNA compatible or certified, it doesn't tell you enough to know what it will serve or how it will serve it! And most companies do not go into any detail at all about the nuances of what there DLNA device will do or not do. It is kind of buyer beware and make sure you can return it when you find out it won't do this or that.
 4. I am trying to find a NAS unit that has a DLNA server built in (like twonky, minidlna, etc.) that has the ability to serve to a media controller like an iPhone or Touch both aiff files and flac files with all tagging and album art available. I am trying to not use a computer in the setup. With a NAS unit, a wireless router/access point, a PS Audio Perfectwave DAC with a bridge, and an iPhone I can play all of my music hi and lo res, aiff and flac, without needing a computer running. Obviously I need a computer to get the files to the NAS in the chosen format, but once copied to the NAS a computer is not needed. Right now I am able to do it but I have to use 2 different DLNA servers because I cannot find a unit that will serve both with all tagging intact. Any ideas? Chuck
 5. Chris-

I have read the owners manual and cannot find any reference to the ability of the Synology DS 411 slim to playback aiff files through the menu system of the DLNA server. Will this unit playback aiff through the dlna server with tagging, i.e., Artist, Album, Title, and cover art?

From Page 157 of the PDF Manual

Audio: AAC, FLAC, M4A, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, PCM, WAV, WMA, WMA VBR, WMA PRO, WMA Lossless

From Page 160

To enable transcoder Settings:
Tick the following checkboxes to enable transcoders if your DMA does not support the following audio formats:
FLAC, APE, AAC, OGG, and AIFF.
 6. I am planning on being there and would look forward to some kind of event, gathering, etc. Chuck
 7. If you don't have to have an iPpad, iPhone, or iTouch remote app, go to jriver and pick up a media center remote with infra red/usb sensor. Can browse by just about any item you choose to setup and works quite well for handling large collections. Chuck Look here http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Media_Center_Remote
 8. Chris:
You need to come to Miami or at least Fort Lauderdale and give your presentation. Beaches, warm weather, sand, basketball players.

Chuck
 9. I know that 3 of us will be there for RMAF this year and would almost certainly be willing to meet before, after, or during the show. Not too early to plan something. Chuck
 10. Lewis: I just sent the driver. Chuck
 11. I posted in that thread that the 141 driver would not produce sound with WASAPI. I had no problem at all with ASIO4ALL or DirectShow. Now that I have gone back to the earlier driver it all works perfectly. One thing I have noticed and I don't know if it has anything to do with anything but people running Win7 seemed to have the 141 driver work for them and mostly Vista users have the problem. Nothing scientific but just a trend I have noticed.

Chuck
 12. I sent the file off to rtankm and Leo1311 this morning and they have emailed me back saying that they had received it. The file I received was named 'Win7Vista103.zi_'. Once you have copied the file to your hard drive it must be renamed Win7Vista103.zip in order for it to unpack and be usable. If you need the file, let me know. Chuck
 13. I uninstalled the current 1.03.141 driver from Hiface and installed what appears to be the original 1.03 driver. It all works now. Every resolution between 44.1 and 192 and all in between. Sounds pretty good, too. I have to thank dtc here at CA because he must have read my post and sent me the driver he had that worked for him. It was the same one that Marco sent me this morning but it was a very nice thing to do. Thanks dtc! All is working well now and it is time for some serious pleasurable listening. The wife and daughter will be out at the Heat basketball game tomorrow night so I will have uninterrupted time to listen. My preliminary judgement is that the Hiface is much better than the Musiland 01USD I previously had. And the Bryston BDA-1 is not too shabby either. Chuck
 14. I have received a driver from Marco at Hiface this morning. It is not a new driver but an older beta driver. I will load it up tonight and see whether or not WASAPI come to life. I will post back when I have results. Chuck
