  1. which music and video server are you using ? none of my beeswax , but where did you buy it and how much did you pay ? my dac is the behringer src2496 which has been around for years but is still a current model and is also cheap for about 100 dollars at guitar center . i am hoping that i can find a decent new music and video server that will output a spdif ( optical or coax ) stereo signal that i can plug into my src2496 . anybody know about the micca mplay hd net ? here is a link : http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MPLAY-HD-Net-Streamer-Internet/dp/B0042J9BQE?&camp=213293&creative=387917&linkCode=waf&tag=dealrow-20 thank you . also there is the zinwell: http://www.amazon.com/Zinwell-ZIN-5005HD-Networking-Ready-Multimedia-Downloader/dp/B003L0QD6G/ref=pd_cp_e_2 who knows what works ? aside from lousy tv screen software commands , what else is really bad about these bargain units ? then there is the masscool which has room for a built in hard drive : http://www.masscool.com/product_detail.php?pid=&id=162 does anybody know about the masscool unit ? thanks
  2. may i please make a suggestion ? there needs to be a comprehensive survey -- on this thread or on computer audiophile -- which covers the bewildering array of new music ( and video ) servers which are now sold on line for around a hundred dollars . perhaps there is less interest about these units here in computer audiophile because they are cheap and probably will never advertise on the site . also these units probably have mediocre sonic potential compared to the megabuck audiophile grade stuff that is discussed in computer audiophile . but these are the pieces of equipment that i am presently shopping for because i have very little money to spend on this kind of equipment . i just have to laugh when a five thousand dollar dac or eight hundred dollar cable is discussed in computer audiophile . they look nice and i am sure they sound good -- but only one out of ten thousand readers will ever actually buy any of these overpriced pieces of equipment which will be obsolete in about twelve months anyway . the units i am looking at will be obsolete in a year also ... but they are all i can afford . so what can i do ? i am talking about units that take a signal from a computer or a hard drive or a usb pen drive or a sd card or a home network and produce a video movie in several formats and also deliver a stereo audio signal through spdif or analogue outputs which i can then plug into my cheap dac and self powered monitors . the brand names are micca , masscool , zinwell , brite-view , and many others which are sold from hong-kong and the usa -- mostly from amazon and ebay and specialty sites . some use internal hard drives and some use external hard drives . some take usb pen drives and a few use sd cards . some of these units can hook up to your main computer using a ethernet cable and some can even hook up to your main computer using 802.11n wireless dongles . these pieces of gear are priced around one hundred dollars . i would like to hear something about how well they actually sound . is the spdif signal which comes from these units acceptable for use as a cheap alternative music server ? does anyone here actually use one of these units ? thanks in advance for your feedback .
