  1. I have some questions about digital interface limitations and am hoping that the more knowlegeable among you might correct any misunderstanding I have. I just upgraded my DAC, making the connection from my computer the weakest link in my digital audio chain. I am looking for the best solution that maximizes the capability of the new DAC while minimizing inherent down-sides of the different interfaces. My currect set up is: iTunes library on an external USB 2.0 HD -> MacMini (early 2009, 10.11.6) -> TOSLINK output -> Gefen Digital Audio Extender sender -> Cat6 cable -> Gefen DAE receiver -> TOSLINK Cable -> Schiit Bifrost Multibit. The MacMini is limited to 24 bit/ 96 kHz over TOSLINK. The Gefen DAE has the same limitation. The goal is to restore 192 kHz sampling rate ability for the DAC. The distance between my computer and DAC is currently 6 meters, but I hope to move my computer farther away in the near future. Here are the solutions I am considering. I'm not set on the linked products; they are included just to give a better idea of the proposed solution. MacMini -> Active USB 2.0 extension -> USB cable -> DAC: lowest cost, 25 m limitation, higher jitter MacMini -> USB cable -> USB-over-Cat6 extender -> USB cable -> DAC: 50 m limitation, higher cost, higher jitter http://www.gefen.com/product/gefen-usb-20-sr-extender-over-one-cat-5-cable-EXT-USB2.0-SR MacMini -> USB cable -> USB-S/PDIF converter -> S/PDIF cable -> DAC: higher cost, more suceptable to interferance https://wyred4sound.com/products/dacs-converters/%C2%B5link MacMini -> USB cable -> USB reclocker -> USB cable -> DAC: 10 m limitation, higher cost https://wyred4sound.com/products/digital-converters/recovery Switch to Roon, ethernet -> Roon Endpoint -> S/PDIF Cable -> S/PDIF Reclocker -> DAC: lower jitter, highest cost, most effort https://www.hifiberry.com/shop/bundles/hifiberry-digi-bundle/ https://wyred4sound.com/products/digital-converters/remedy-reclocker Thank you for your help.

  3. Update for those interested. Release date is November 2015. https://www.facebook.com/Peachtree-Audio-159840707959/timeline/
  4. Sorry to resurrect the thread. I'm late to the party but have been playing this album nonstop this week: first on my home stereo, and then through my mobile headphone amp. I immediately heard the very off-putting vocal quality mentioned. Yeah, when overdone, it's a pretty darn cheesy facsimile. And, perhaps, it's made worse by starting the album with what is probably the harshest example: "Coming Home." On some tracks, though, it works so well with his voice. Rather than a time warp to 60's soul, like I think they intended, I found the harshness of the recording pushed me away while the smoothness of his singing pulled me into the song. As a result, I was more engaged than I would have been otherwise. Listen to "Lisa Sawyer" again and see if you hear it, too.
  5. Just watched Interstellar and HAD to listen to the Hans Zimmer's soundtrack. Thank goodness HDTracks was there for me, even if only at 44.1. http://www.hdtracks.com/interstellar-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-deluxe-version
  6. I'm considering a Oppo HA-1, but their website lists no dealers in the US. I know it'll be too much to ask for a dealer on Oahu, but does anyone have a source? Where to Buy OPPO Products - OPPO I tried here, too Let me google that for you
  7. Very true. It's a used market with some new CDs being sold by the company. The business model makes it not worth it for those higher prices albums, but the few I have bought were older than a decade and not well distributed anymore. It's a good option for the "right" album, but I wouldn't shop there first.
  8. I hear you. What would be your suggestion to look at for a $2k total budget?
  9. I'll double check but both of those pre's were listed at > $2k without DACs. I'm not settled on Benchmark but they go offer 30 day trials on their new units, which is why I didn't buy the older clearance DAC-1.
  10. Both the Auralic and Jeff Roland pre's look awesome but don't leave room for an external DAC in the budget. I hear you about a tube pre, but I'm partial to the one box solution (integration is always hardest in system engineering and I can't shake those habits). I like what the 240 does for the sound out of my Decco. I guess with this move, I'm looking for a DAC and pre that don't need as much help...in the $2k range. Looking at the Bechmark page the other day, I almost pulled the trigger on that DAC-1 close out. Such a good deal.
  11. I can't believe I forgot about Benchmark. DAC2 is definitely on the list. Also, good call on the jitter from the AEx. US prices for the DSPeaker would blow the budget, but a Wyred 4 Sound Remedy might be necessary for some of the less robust DAC options.
  12. I haven't seen anyone else talking about Murfie as another source for lossless (standard res) downloads. Murfie - the lossless download store you've probably never heard of | Digital Audio Review by John Darko I read the above last week and tried it for a couple of albums (early hip hop in this case that didn't need to be hi-res, availability was limited and overpriced for new CD, etc.)- instant gratification, ALAC, bargain-bin prices...it's definitely on my list of stores, for the "right" album.
