This may well be the lowest price ever for one of the very best DACs out there at any price. For sale for $3995, it is well under half price, and in perfect working order.
It is the same fully loaded SE that you can read about on the famous Audiogon thread called “Absolute Top Tier DAC For Res Redbook CD,” in which the Overdrive SE is compared to a veritable gauntlet of the best DACs currently available in an extensive, beautifully described shootout, and beats all comers, even some that are very well known and much more expensive.
One of the participants in the thread, a seasoned audiophile, insists that the Overdrive SE sounds better on ordinary redbook recordings than other DACs sound playing DSD files. Yes, it is that good. He has since upgraded to the SX, though he maintains that the SE is better than those other top tier DACs sound using DSD.
For anyone interested in upgrading to an SX, you could work this out with Steve Nugent, but once you hear how good the ODSE is, you probably will not want to part with it!
This Overdrive has the Paul Hynes regulators, upgraded CUTF coupling caps, a 1 meter Polestar USB cable, and the Short Block USB filter. You can read all about it on the Empirical Audio web site, or in any number of glowing reviews. A fully loaded SE with all the extras would run in excess of $9,000. This one is in perfect working order, but will be sent to Steve for a full check up before being sent on to you.
