  1. I agree on classical being a better (apples to apples) comparison. Comparing the Petrenko - Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 1, last movement; MQA vs. regular Tidal, the start of the fortissimo bass drum sounds like someone is hitting a big cardboard box on the regular file. The MQA sounds more realistic. Also the trumpet fanfare that follows sounds much more focused with obvious dynamic shadings that get lost on the standard file. This with the un-decoded 48hz mqa file.
  2. I had a similar problem with my previous dac metrum. It was during conversion of dsd to pcm. I saw buffering at the beginning of the track, but afterwards played fine. AURALIC said it was my network speed. You may try with a USB drive to see if that's the cause. Good luck! Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  3. Never heard Hex or Mojo, but I liked the Octave's sound. However, to my ears 2Qute is in a different league to Octave.
  4. My issue is playing sacs rips (dsd64). It's only a small issue. I don't think there is anything wrong with the DAC. BTW, the Chord replaced a Metrum Octave Mk2. I think you'll like it
  5. Yes, I read a comment by Rob Watts in the Dave thread on head-fi. If that is the case, then the Aries may not be ideal for DoP playback. Thanks
  6. I should add that the problem is not consistent. Sometimes the dropout happens at the beginning of a track for one second and the rest of the album plays fine, sometimes it plays the whole album fine or it can happen several times during playback. When it happens the white light on the dac turns blue.

I have never gotten dropouts using the mini. Library is on mini over minimserver (latest version, but I did experience the same on earier versions of minimserver). Any ideas? Hi, I'm having a similar problem with my new 2Qute on DoP DSF files. My Aries is wired. I wonder how you solved it. I posted this on the Aries thread. Any idea as to the cause of this (Aries, 2Qute, network)?
  8. Hi, the files are sacd rips (DSD64). I don't have another DSD DAC but already tried the DAC delay settings to no avail. Will try a usb drive tonight. Thanks

  10. I'd like to add that for someone like me, with zero interest in becoming a computer expert, the Aries, or something similar (Moon 180, etc.) makes perfect sense.
  11. This little story might help. I always thought cd's sounded better than a file. After all, how can a copy be better than the original? One day out of curiosity, I tried a flac from a pen drive to my Oppo 103. (The Oppo as transport to my DAC). The file sounded noticeably better than the cd. In this case, all things being equal, the copy was better. The reason? Possibly lower jitter from not having a noisy drive with moving parts involved in the process. Who knows. I thought the difference in SQ was enough for me to go to the trouble of buying a NAS and ripping +2,000 cds. Sometimes, for fun, I compare the Oppo as a file transport to the Aries. The difference between them is much greater than the difference between the Oppo as cd transport/file transport. The Aries might not look like much, but is gooood.
  12. Ditching a source component before trying minor adjustments seems drastic to me. In my system, changing speaker angle even by a little, makes a big difference in terms of focus and treble perception. I agree on your take on the new firmware. Much more resolving and better for good and not so good recordings.
  13. Thanks. Will keep ripping w/o adding gain. The lower volume may give more control over the volume range
