  1. Thanks all for your recommendations and comments. Collectively, you've driven me to consider why I use Audirvana+. An important reason is that it isn't iTunes/Music and although I am a "Mac guy," I'm not wedded to everything in the MacOS ecosphere. Second is my understanding is that Audirvana+ offers by way of upsampling the best opportunity to improve sound quality for the low bit-depth and -rate media (AIFF and AAC) that I hold by way of up sampling, although I have a few high-resolution albums. Playback is an issue of course as well. There is a discernable and pleasant improvement in sound quality when using the Audioquest Dragonfly Red DAC with either my headphones or Earbuds. Significantly this system is very transportable (OFFICE SYSTEM and MOBILE SYSTEM) and at a reasonable price-point. I'll assume the DAC in my Audioengine A2 speakers is providing a sound improvement as well and I've found it "good enough" for the moment. The HOME STEREO won't be improved as it is "good enough" for my wife's use and any other additions would add more unwanted technology for her consideration.
  2. Thanks for the recommendation and it’s oN the todo list. Am having problems installing on the Catalina OS and will look into an older version.
  3. Thanks for the comments. The MacMini and 2008 MacBook Pro can't update past their current configurations, so worst case, you are right, stick with Audirvana 3.5 and remain happy. That being said, since I'm looking around, are there other viable software solutions?
  4. BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT - I'm seeking recommendations for software to use on my systems SYSTEMS: OFFICE: 2018 13" MacBook Pro, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, MACOS 11.4; DAC Dragonfly Red; Earbuds - Etymotic E4R; Headphones - Sennheiser 280 Pro; Software - Apple Music, A+ HOME OFFICE: 2011 MacMini, 1TB HDD, 16GB RAM, MACOS 10.15.7; Speakers - Audioengine 2+ w/integrated 16bit 44.1/48 DAC; Software - Apple Music, A+ HOME STEREO: 2010 13" MacBook Pro, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, MACOS 10.13.6; NAD 106 Preamp, NAD 208 Amp, Linn LP-12, Realistic Optimus speakers MOBILE: iPhone 10 Max; DAC Dragonfly Red; Earbuds - Etymotic E4R; Software - Apple Music, Onkyo HF Player, A+ Remote PROBLEM DISCUSSION: I've been entirely satisfied running Audirvana+ (now 3.5+) for over four years. However, Audirvana announced it's new subscription licensing policy to move to the upgraded version. Add this to the plethora of now licensed software (Office 365, Adobe Products, etc.) and it soon becomes too expensive to license, rather than own software, albeit at an initial higher cost. Easiest course of action is to remain at A+ and migrate it to my home system as well. However, if A+ becomes untenable, what other options are considerations given my humble systems? Thanks for your considerations.
  5. I had to ask as I had the same issue, and it was solved using that method. Have you tried a different music source, such as someone else's computer? Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  6. Did you try the technique discussed in Message #72 above? I found where you control volume has substantial effects. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  7. Damien, For your consideration: Albums images 'refresh' when transitioning between tracks. By this I mean that they briefly disappear and then reappear when one track finishes playing and the next begins. More specifically, it appears that albums yet to be played 'refresh' while those that have already played, such as in a play list, remain without 'refreshing.' System: MacBook Pro 13', 5,1; 16GB RAM; 1TB SSD. MacOS Sierra 10.12.1 Audirvana 2.5.99.19 Thanks, Art Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  8. I've had the same problem as well with 2.5.4 and the 2.6 beta. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  9. Bottom Line: Volume Range is reduced. Maximum volume reduction remains unchanged. -48 dB entry yields range of -64 dB to -57 dB -54 dB entry yields range of -64 dB to -60 dB
  10. To clarify my last post due to iPad autocorrect goodness... "In example, the full range of loudness at -36 dB restricts the loudness Range from -64 dB to -53 dB. I'd like to get a bit below -64 dB."
  11. Thanks for the recommendation. I had considered that approach, but expected the control limited the upper end of loudness. In applying the recommended changes, I found on my computer that the upper end of loudness was restricted, but without extending the bottom end. In example, the full range of loudness at -36 dB restricts the loudness from -64 dB too 54 dB. I'd like to get a bit below -64 dB. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  12. Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, maximum attenuation is still on -64dB. I'd like it to go deeper, perhaps -128db, as my system configuration (MacBook Pro to Dragonfly Red to Sennheiser 280 Pro) is as simple as I can get, but is still too loud on some tracks even at the lowest volume setting. 13. I've arrived late to the discussion, but offer that I have the Sennheiser 280 Pro as well as the Etymotic ER-4p and both work well in my environment, with the IEMs giving better separation (~40db). However, your described environment appears to be louder than that where you can use headphones or IEMs safely to attenuate the sound. One of the temptations is to use headphones and IEMs driven at high levels to defeat distracting sound. Unfortunately, high sound levels can damage hearing, but may interfere with cognitive tasks as well. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  14. Too easy! I don't know why I didn't look there earlier. Thanks for spending my money on some good Schitt. I'll order as soon as I get home this evening. - Art Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  15. Damien, Bottom Line Up Front: Please consider extending the volume control to -128dB. Discussion: Most of my workday is spent wearing Sennheiser 280 Pro headphones fed through an AudioQuest DragonFly Red from a MacBook Pro (7,1). In that application, many of my tracks are too loud even at their lowest volume setting. I'd like to be able to further attenuate the sound level. Thanks, Art Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
