  1. Purely speculating here: To what degree, if any, does anyone believe, (Mitchco included) that the reported experience with the HP 50 is applicable to the HP 20 (IEM) and HP 30 (on ear) NAD 'phones? Thanks.
  2. This has been going on for many years. Don't remember how it started but one focus of the competition is to generate the loudest, lowest frequency possible. Some competitors fill the vehicle with concrete to absorb/dampen vibrations to get the "clearest" possible result. Car audio companies provide sponsorship, promotion and prizes. Some years ago either the History Channel or Discovery did a program on this following a couple of teams and their "engineering" to achieve the lowest and loudest.
  3. I've owned a couple of pair Koss Porta-Pros and they are great for the price. Definitely two-dimensional sound stage and they are open-back so outside sounds get in. The thin foam ear pads wear out quickly but some online vendors will toss in an extra pair gratis when you buy from them. Biggest caveat is the VERY thin speaker wires which can break too easily. Check out https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-koss-porta-pro-x-headphones. Although the "drop" has ended this is an "upgraded" Porta-Pro that addresses the cable issue plus other "enhancements". Unfortunately this version is not available through Koss directly. Also try their KSC 35 & 75; same drivers as the Porta-Pro in an earclip design.
  4. Does anyone on this board have any experience/familiarity with Edifier’s products, especially their powered/active speakers? They appear to be attractive technologically and definitely price-wise. The company seems to have relatively recently entered the US market (via Amazon) and appears to be popular in Asia (based in China) and Europe. They seem to be well liked among posters on HeadFi. In addition the blogger Digital Stereophony http://digitalstereophony.blogspot.com/ has performed some interesting speaker comparisons where Edifier speakers came out well. Based on his recent test (vs. JBL LSR305, Klipsch R15 - PM) of Edifier’s S2000 Pro (incl. DAC/DSP) this seems like a serious performer for the price. Not reviewed is the lower priced S1000DB (w/o DAC). However, except for good reviews on Amazon I’m reluctant to take the plunge despite what otherwise seems to be the real deal. Other speakers in the running: Vanatoo T0 (w/a sub) & T1; Audioengine HD6; Peachtree M24; JBL LSR305; Klipsch R15-PM. Any insight would be appreciated.
  5. I have read about the "noise" in reviews of the R-15PM as well including on Klipsch's own forum. It seems to vary from annoying to rendering the speakers unlistenable. One audio blogger http://digitalstereophony.blogspot.com/ praised the sound quality but recommended against using the R-15PM in nearfield/desktop applications (<1.5m away) where "noise/hiss" was very noticeable. He did give them a strong recommendation for use as "normal" standmounts with a sub as he felt they needed low frequency help.
  6. RE: "The Sixes"; my need is for something for a living room of (LWH) of 19x12x9 fed by a Pi3 based server/blu-ray/phono. Also considering audioengine HD6 at this price point. Me/wife's music tastes: R&B, jazz (traditional, fusion) pop. Volume from mid-day loud to late night soft. Your opinion. Thanks.
  7. Klipsch seems to be moving in the "right" direction of late regarding sound quality of its mainstream lines. Has anyone heard "The Sixes" yet or the R-15PM? Regarding "The Three", no TOSLINK and no stereo paring leave me out.
  8. What software would be appropriate given the limited RAM? My current laptop uses JRiver which is probably too much for the Compaq. Would any of the Linux distros (Moode, Volumio etc) work? Stick with iTunes? Music (FLAC/WAV) on external HDD. Ease of use and SQ paramount. Thanks.
  9. I have an old HP/Compaq laptop I was wondering if it could be repurposed as a music server. Here's the basic specs: Compaq Presario V2410US (Win XP) AMD Turion 64, ML30, 1mb L2 Cache 2G Ram , 333Mhz DDR, Maxed It probably can't be, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks.
  10. Is anyone familiar with these folks: https://audio359.eu? Based in Belgium they're selling a system composed of a Raspberry Pi 2/HiFiBerry DAC plus Audioengine A5+'s w/speaker stands. Price, current euro/dollar conversion, is ~$765.00/$831.00 depending upon the speaker cabinet type.
  11. On May 11th in Munich, Dynaudio presented the succesor to the XEO 3/5 models with the 4/6 models. According to the press release and the web site the primary differences are 24/96 capability; direct controls on the speakers and a wireless range extender. No word on release date or pricing
  12. Any one aware of any high audio quality alternatives to iPods that do FLAC? I've only seen the Samsung Galaxy's and the Sandisk Clip+. The Sony's don't do FLAC.
  13. Try this: Laptop; Audioengine A2's; NuForce UDAC2 (as pre-amp & DAC) + V-Moda M-80 headphones. Control the volume with UDAC - turn on first, then the A2's, set the A2 volume to prefered max level; control overall volume from the UDAC.
  14. For my miserly budget the NuForce uDAC2 is excellent @ $129.00US. I'm using it as pre-amp for my Audioengine A2's as well as driving my Koss Porta-Pro's. NuForce's more upscale yet inexpensive boxes have had excellent reviews. Samsung laptop (new)w/AMD A6 processor, Win7 Premium and JRiver MC. All music on external Western Digital USB HD.
  15. IMO it makes sense to do both. In other words archive/backup your music (WAV) on an external drive with a compressed copy on your C drive. Thus if (when?) your internal drive goes south you have preserved your music full sized on the external unit. This also enables you to more easily sync with your iPod. There's no one "correct" bullet proof way of doing it. It's what you feel most comfortable with. I use an old Compaq laptop (Media Monkey) with a Western Digital Passport Essential external (250GB)HD, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 slot card DAC and a pair of Audioengine 2's. For portable: Sansa Clip+, NuForce Icon Mobile, Koss Porta Pro 'phones. Not SOA by a long shot but does it for me for now.
