  1. Hi, thanks for your input on this. I've had a reply on Steve Hoffman forums which explains the confusion - my CD which I was comparing to, the 1994 Joe Gastwirt remaster (and the boxset) has the channels narrowed, so the right channel is not silent. The new hi def digital mix is correct.
  2. So it appears this album was originally a pono exclusive last year and released along with the CSNY 1974 digital downloads. Pono no longer being with us, it looks like other retailers now have hold of it. There's a discussion of its release on Steve Hoffmann forums. No one seems to have noticed the missing channel on the first track. http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/deja-vu-24-192.517335/ The album was remastered at Bernie Grundman remastering according to pono music's facebook. They also did the 2005 vinyl release, so it may be the same source, although the track timings differ considerably. https://www.discogs.com/Crosby-Stills-Nash-Young-Déjà-Vu/release/2408262
  3. Hi. I don't think I was particularly tactless, I was just pointing out that given the record company don't seem to have paid that much attention to the first seconds of the very first track, I am not confident the rest of the album has been mastered to a high standard. I understand that they didn't produce the item themselves. Any bricks and mortar retailer who supply physical goods, or even online only such as Amazon wouldn't just say, oh, the supplier supplied a bad product, tough luck, they'd offer a refund or replacement. But given it seems this digital album is identical across all vendors, comparing my own Dynamic Range Meter analysis to that on the loudness wars database, a non faulty replacement doesn't seem like an option: http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year?artist=Crosby%2C+Stills%2C+Nash+%26+Young&album=Deja+Vu foobar2000 1.3.12 / Dynamic Range Meter 1.1.1 log date: 2017-05-07 16:30:54 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young / Deja Vu (1) Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young / Deja Vu (2-10) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Duration Track -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR13 -1.35 dB -16.80 dB 4:28 01-Carry On DR12 -2.24 dB -16.93 dB 2:54 02-Teach Your Children DR12 -3.55 dB -18.11 dB 4:30 03-Almost Cut My Hair DR11 -5.32 dB -20.75 dB 3:40 04-Helpless DR11 -1.66 dB -16.79 dB 3:54 05-Woodstock DR11 -3.84 dB -18.05 dB 4:13 06-Deja Vu DR13 -2.55 dB -19.25 dB 3:00 07-Our House DR13 -3.52 dB -21.33 dB 2:08 08-4 + 20 DR10 -3.03 dB -15.97 dB 5:13 09-Country Girl: A. 4. After seeing an HD version of one of my favourite albums was available, I had a look around on the various HD sites, accessible from the UK, namely qobuz, HDTracks, 7Digital, 7Digital worked out the cheapest so went for them. With eager anticipation, I put in my original CD, downloaded the album, unzipped, and opened in foobar. At first, I thought, hmm, it's OK, but nothing amazing. But listening a few times on the first track, something seemed off. Eventually I got it! The first 14 seconds on the right channel on Carry On are silent! So I sent off an email to 7Digital saying, that basically this isn't really what I expect from premium high definition music, so I'd like a refund. 2 working days passed, absolutely no response or refund. Anyone else have trouble with 7Digital with faulty products like this? Attached below musicscope analysis of three of the tracks:
  5. Thanks I have had a look into this, but I don't think it can take the vinyl or CD audio from the amp downstairs and stream it to other speakers though?
  6. Thanks . I think, but am not certain that they have all the iPod and iPhone content on network drives so that might not be as important issue as I thought. I hadn't thought of that, so I can basically merge the amp and the network player into one? Thanks, I'd never heard of this Google thing, I'll have a look into it . Thanks very much for your extensive reply . I think Sonos might well be the way to go. Having a look at their website I could use a Sonos Connect and connect this to the aux in of their existing amp, allowing them to use their present hifi setup. I could then setup Sonos Play speakers in their office, connected with thin Ethernet cable to the router or maybe a separate switch? The Sonos apps certainly seem to be well developed and user friendly, although I may look at some of the AV receiver options above and see if they can compete!
  7. A bit of a hodge podge Downstairs they have old 80s separates amp, tuner and turntable connected to wall (top corner) mounted speakers, and a Sony mini CD hifi with DAB tuner and ipod input. The downstairs is fairly large and open plan so more than one set of speakers may be preferable. They prefer the idea of stereo speakers rather than the all in one types. Upstairs in the office they use their laptop as the 'controller', and play music through iTunes or Spotify with this, through the aux input on a mini hifi system, with the speakers mounted in the corners of the room.
  8. So, I am helping someone out get a new music setup for their house, they presently play mainly from iTunes accessing music on networked drives or Spotify in their office, or plugging an ipod or iphone into their stereo setup (with vinyl) downstairs. Ideally they want a stereo speaker setup in possibly two areas downstairs, and upstairs in their office, with an easy way to control which speakers the music is coming out of using their iPhone. Is a system such as Sonos best suited for this, or would it be possible with separates i.e. a Marantz network player in each room, or would that be a bad way of doing it?
  9. With qobuz, you get the best available I think, it seemed the cheapest for me here in the UK, HD Tracks UK does not have it available, 7digital is a bit more. I see there is a SACD release just come out from analogue productions, but not sure if it is 11 or 22 tracks (it says both mono and stereo)? Would it be likely they would eventually release this as a DSD download? The Beach Boys-Smiley Smile-Hybrid Stereo SACD|Acoustic Sounds
  10. Attached a couple more spectrum analyses from the stereo & mono versions of She's Goin Bald, the stereo version does seem to have something above 22 KHz, most notably after 1:15, but I'm not certain whether or not these could be upsampling artifacts Stereo Mono
  11. Just purchased this from Qobuz.com (seems same as 7digital and acousticsounds), and was rather disappointed on using Spek spectrum analyser to see that there doesn't seem to be any real data above 22Khz, possibly indicating a CD upsample? I'd appreciate if people could take a look at the screenshot and clarify one way or the other!? Thanks! Dynamic range info using foobar2000 Album details - Dynamic Range Database
