  1. Back in August I had exactly the same problem. After much search it looked like some BDP-80FD are defective right out of the box. I ended up returning mine to Best Buy and bought an Oppo 103. Couldn't be happier.
  2. Agreed, that's why I returned it. Seems some BDP-80FD have this issue right out of the box.
  3. Nothing to do with the script. My BDP-80FD could not recognize the SACD layer of most hybrid discs even as a stand-alone blu-ray player.
  4. My Oppo 103 has no problem reading hybrid discs. First I would check the initial set up and make sure the default is to read the SACD layer, Setup menu -> Playback setup -> SACD priority -> Multichannel If it still cannot read the SACD layer it is possible that the laser head may be aging. When a SACD player fails to read hybrid discs, usually it is the laser head issue. How old is your 103D ?
  5. In my case, no matter how many times I eject-close the tray on the BDP-80FD, and press the CD/SACD button on the remote, most hybrid discs were recognized as "CD" only. For the 3 or 4 hybrids it read, it always displays "SACD" first time closing the tray though. I returned the BDP-80FD for an Oppo 103, couldn't be happier. My Oppo has been working flawlessly since it arrived.
  6. First of all, I'd also like to thank the people who made SACD ripping possible and provided the tools and instructions. I followed Jorg97's footsteps, returned my Pioneer BDP-80FD and bought an Oppo 103 instead. I decided not to exchange for another Pioneer mainly because of the bad experience Jorg97 and me had - failure to read most hybrid discs and occasional freezes up. The latter has been reported before in the Amazon reviews so we are not alone. These, coupled with the poor packaging and mediocre build quality, do not inspire much confidence in its long-term reliability. Moreover, the BDP-80FD is reputed to be just a re-badged version of the BDP-170 (they share the same service manual). The selling price of BDP-170 in Asia is about US$150-180, while the current price of BDP-80FD in the US is approx $260-300. Not too sure what Pioneer had done to the player to justify the extra $100+. My Oppo 103 arrived today and is now ripping the hybrid discs the Pioneer failed to read. All I did was went into set up and disabled autoplay, connected the player to my network, copied down the assigned IP address into ISO2DSD, plugged in the USB flash drive containing AutoScript, clicked 'execute' in ISO2DSD and, bingo, it worked in the first attempt ! The packaging of Oppo is much better, day and night from the Pioneer. The build quality is also better. I like the player itself wrapped in a re-usable shopping bag, and the accessories are placed together in a nice box. The Pioneer remote control just sits loosely inside the box and rattles around when moved. I'm a happy camper now.
  7. Good to hear that. The manufacture date should be on a label in the back of the player and also in the box outside.
  8. The trouble with my (and Jorg97's) BDP-80FD is its failure to read most hybrid discs, even as a standalone blu ray player. I would suggest you to try a few more hybrids and see whether the display shows "SACD" upon closing the tray. Also, what was the manufacture date of your player ?
  9. Single layer or hybrid discs ? My BDP-80FD has problem reading most hybrids.
  10. Thanks to Fitzcaraldo215, MikeyFresh, Obtuse and tmtomh for your opinions. I have 10 more days to return/exchange my BDP-80FD to Bestbuy. So far I have seen a mixed success with BDP-80FD/BDP-160. I would be interested to hear more from other Pioneer users. Interestingly almost every OPPO user reported no problem with their players.
  11. So from your 10 years experience what do you think about the reliability of OPPO players and the after sales support (including out-of-warranty repair) ? I'm currently debating whether I should return my Pioneer BDP-80FD for another one, or just buy an OPPO 103. Like you, I'll be using the player for ripping SACD only. Not sure it justifies the extra cost.
  12. Thanks to those who contributed to his thread. After trying the various suggestions still have no luck in getting my BDP-80FD to read hybrid discs. - the online firmware update feature confirmed my player is already up-to-date. (Manfactured date Jan 2016). - unplugged both the ethernet and HDMI cables, no difference. - "loaded a hybrid multichannel SACD that the player can recognize as an SACD, selected the multichannel SACD area, then tried to play/rip a problematic hybrid disc". No good, once the tray was opened/closed it cleared the multi-channel setting. Agreed with MikeyFresh that the packaging is junk and the laser might be very slightly knocked out of alignment during transit. To avoid the shipping issue I already drove 25 miles to buy it from a Bestbuy store instead of taking advantage of their free shipping. Most likely I'll return my player to Bestbuy soon. Wonder what my next move should be - either try to exchange another BDP-80FD or just order an Oppo 103. The Oppo 103 at $500 is a bit expensive for my sole purpose of ripping SACD.
  13. Thanks. It looks only some BDP-80FD and BDP-160 are having problem reading hybrid discs, even as standalone blu ray player.
  14. Just to make it clear, when you operated the players as standalone blu-ray units without connecting to the Ethernet and no USB flash drive attached, one player recognized the SACD disc and the other didn't ? If so, I would think it is likely a defective unit.
  15. Jorg97 and me have the same problem for hybrids, the display only shows "CD", the player didn't read the SACD layer. But no problem for single layer disc, it always shows "SACD" and I ripped a few already. I'm inclined to think that it is a hardware issue, but would like to have the opinion of other BDP-160/BDP-80FD owners.
