  1. Ditto. I absolutely LOVE my A1, but unless I win the lottery my trusted A1 will be there for the immediate, and probably long-term future. Not that I’m dissatisfied. Not at all. I recently went down the Roon/Nucleus route, and the A1 integrates absolutely perfectly with the Roon ‘system’. I just want to say a MASSIVE ‘Thank You!’ to Peter @wklie and everyone else at Lumin for the constant firmware updates to my now (relatively aged) A1, that keep it relevant, and keep me listening! My Lumin has seriously been the very best investment I’ve made in audio, probably since the time I purchased my Linn LP12 over thirty-years ago 😀
  2. I use a Roon Nucleus as the Roon Core, which feeds my A1. I have integrated my local (USB) HDD music, with both Qobuz and Tidal within Roon to ‘feed’ my A1 as an endpoint. Don’t get me wrong - I think the Lumin control app on its is the absolute best there is. I have used this, with two L1’s on its own for the last year or so with absolutely sublime results. The ‘game changer’ for me was Roon 1.6, with Qobuz integration. I have subscribed to Qobuz Sublime+ for a couple of years now, and whilst ever Roon failed to integrate Qobuz, I wasn’t interested in it. But with 1.6, I could now integrate everything within Roon. And whilst the cost of a Nucleus, plus a lifetime subscription to Roon ain’t cheap, it’s certainly worth it IMO. The level of integration, and the sophistication of the GUI is sublime. And whilst I’m not ‘driving’ the A1 using the Lumin app, being Roon Ready, the A1 functions perfectly, and sounds as sublime as it always has.
  3. Using/engaging Roon’s DSP will make changes to the digital stream, and therefore may change the way it sounds at the endpoint. If Roon’s DSP is switched off/unused, then Roon will stream everything natively/unchanged, so Roon will have no effect at all on SQ.
  4. This assertion does not make any sense whatsoever. As I have posted above, Roon relies on being bit-perfect from Core to endpoint. Roon will have no impact on the SQ of files, unless you use/engage Roon’s DSP.
  5. Roon is built on the premise of a ‘bit perfect’ transfer of data from the Roon Core/NAS, to the Roon endpoint. If that is indeed the case, then Roon should sound no worse, and no better than any other control app/software that you use for your Lumin/network player.
  6. As someone who uses Roon with my A1, I can attest to the fact that Roon does not degrade the SQ of streamed Tidal files, compared to when using Tidal within the Lumin app. They sound identical. I think the reason for that is Roon’s RAAT. In essence, Roon default’s to the Lumin’s master clock, so Roon doesn’t ‘add or take anything away’ from the streamed files (unless you engage Roon’s DSP, of course). When you use Roon, the Roon Core (operating in either a PC/Mac/Nucleus, or in a NAS) directs the digital stream to a Roon endpoint, of which your U1 is one. There is NO degradation in SQ when using Roon, IMO.
  7. Alan Sircom has just reviewed the X1 in the latest issue Hi-Fi+. Predictably, he loves it 👍
  8. What about Tidal & Qobuz? Spotify is lossy, and the other two are lossless. And the point I’m trying to make, is that streaming is the future. Anything that lacks the ability to stream lossless files from a streaming service has limited appeal, and therefore a limited lifespan. And don’t get me wrong - I also have 3TB of local music on my NAS drives, and love it all. But looking forward, that won’t satisfy the music lovers of tomorrow, who attach a diminishing desire to own a digital copy of a recorded work. And that’s not just me talking - the stats prove it. Sales of CD - plummeting. Sales of digital downloads - dropping. But streaming is on the up and up.
  9. I don’t want to ‘hijack’ this thread. BUT a stand-alone music player like the HAP-Z1ES is now very much a ‘niche’ product. I was having a similar discussion with some Linnies on a different forum, but streaming in the very much the future. AND the present! Downloads will always sell, in limited quantities in the future. But streaming will effectively replace downloads. And any player that cannot stream is obsolete IMO.
  10. I was very ‘Roon resistant’, especially with the Lumin control app being so good. But a week-in with a Nucleus, and that’s all changed. I just absolutely LOVE Roon. Like with you, I’ve spent more time listening in the last week, than in the preceding month. No, it’s not cheap. But it’s worth every penny IMO.
  11. I’ve just bought a Roon Nucleus, and can echo your experience using it with my Lumin A1. Nucleus + A1 + NAS + Tidal + Qobuz is the PERFECT audio player IMO!
  12. Roon 1.6, and the ability to integrate both my Tidal and Qobuz accounts, together with the library on my L1, has literally transformed how much I’m listening to my A1 now. However good the Lumin app is, once you integrate everything with Roon, it’s just a joy to use and listen, and this combination keeps me listening well into the early hours 😀 I invested in a Roon Nucleus, and would heartily recommend it. It’s very much ‘plug ‘n play’ like the A1, and they just work perfectly together over my network. But however much I love my A1, I still hanker after the X1 ☺️
  13. This might not be of much use, and you negate/bypass the excellent Lumin DAC’s/output stages, but I have my A1 connected via XLR to my preamp, and use the BNC digital-out from the A1 to connect to a Chord Hugo TT headphone amplifier. It works a treat, and the Hugo is a cracking DAC/headphone amplifier. Not much use if you’re using an analogue only headphone amplifier though...
  14. I think you’re misguided about the benefits of LPS vs SMPS, and IMO you present an oversimplified picture. My Linn Akurate Kontrol preamplifier, my Linn Chakara power amplifiers AND my Lumin A1 are all powered by switching power supplies. And they all sound absolutely fantastic. The situation isn’t as ‘black and white’ as you make it out to be.
  15. Ermm. No, I don’t think so. I think what Peter was trying to say, was don’t go modifying the bloody thing internally in the first place, if you want to keep your warranty! Why would anyone want to dismantle a beautiful unit like the Lumin, and bypass/disable the power supply? Apart from being dangerous, does it really make all that difference? I would say leave well alone, unless you want to risk your life and/or see your beautiful Lumin go up in smoke.
