    The Toshiba specs are 10 meters for the best transmitters and receivers, most do indeed only 5 meters. Found this cool solution which uses Cat5 cable to run up to 300 meters (TOSLINK In->Cat5->TOSLINK Out): http://appsys.ch/products/digitalaudio/toslinkextender Looks pretty good for anyone who does not like compression...
