  1. Thanks for the reply. I am utilizing the 10db pad on the focusrite and line is selected. 12 o'clock on the gain knob is too hot even with the pad enabled. I have it set between 7 and 8 o'clock and the ring will not reach orange even with the amp dimed and a very hard attack on the strings. Its more than loud enough. I have experienced clipping when the gain knob is set too high and the sound I'm hearing is definitely not clipping. I listened to some flac files to see if I could hear the sound but again its very hard to tell when its not something you control and can recreate the sound easily. Im 90% sure its the earbuds. I dont think that they are able to translate what the amp/focusrite are offering. I ordered a pair of HD 598s off amazon. If nothing else it will be a good troubleshooting tool and then i will have a nice pair of headphones. Should be here in a few days and i will comment back if I have a positive experience.
  2. Hey guys i'll try to keep this short and sweet. The setup: Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 18 guitar amp head --> Focusrite Scartlett 2i4 --> Apple earpods via Scarlett 2i4 headphone jack. I am not using an amp cabinet. I actually don't even have a cabinet to test the audio of the amp without headphones unfortunately. The amp head is connected via a DI out directly to the Scarlett 2i4 input via an XLR cable. The problem: Crackling/fizzy noise in the headphones. The crackling/fizzy noise can be heard if i dime the master and gain controls on the clean channel of the amp. The crackling/fizzy noise can be heard after 25% on the master and gain controls on the lead channel. The crackling/fizzy noise seems to be beside the guitar tone rather than in the guitar tone. I believe the problem is that the apple earpods are simply not good enough to monitor the amp output and are starting to break up when the volume is increased. Listening to audio from the PC via the Scarlett 2i4 is fine at any volume but im thinking that mp3 audio from the pc is a bit different than monitoring the guitar amp. Anyone have any experience with monitoring guitar amps and can confirm that this is a likely culprit for the issue i am hearing. Im definitely not an audio pro. I just know what sounds good and what doesn't. Any help, suggestions, or advice you can lend is of great appreciation. I was considering buying a pair of senheiser HD 598s regardless but I'm hoping someone can confirm that the characteristics of apple earpods are not really designed for what i am trying to do and thats likely why i am getting this unpleasant breakup. Thanks!!!
