  1. I place an order on Saturday (for a number of digital discs) and it too added a $5 charge for freight. Since it's a not-for-profit I considered it a small donation and proceeded anyway. Melba did call on Monday to refund the $5 but this isn't practical for O/S buyers and shouldn't happen to start with. But regardles... Now some of the tracks are failing with 'key' errors. I think best to avoid this until all is resolved. Since I'm in Australia I'll give Melba Recordings a go and try and get this resolved soon. It'll be great if it worked smoothly! Kind regards Adrian (sorry for the errors in my message, my glasses aren't on and I'm going in 'blind')
  2. Good day all I've just become aware of Melba Recordings who are now offering Studio Master 96/24 files of their recordings. They have one of the most highly-regarded recent Ring Cycles (from an audio and performance perspective) on offer and plenty of other amazing classical music from great Australian artists including Simone Young, Cheryl Barker and plenty more. I don't believe there are region restrictions. Good luck! Adrian
  3. Linn Records (www.linnrecords.co.uk) has no region restrictions (and has some good stuff!). 2L (Norway) - http://www.2l.musiconline.no also offers some good stuff (especially if you enjoy Grieg).
  4. Peter Garbiel's "Scratch My Back" is available in full 24/48 FLAC to B&W Society of Sound members. If you needed a reason to join, now might be the time!
  5. Dave Moulton of Moulton Laboratories (who has published papers in AES - albeit not the following): http://www.moultonlabs.com/more/taking_stock/ http://www.moultonlabs.com/more/high_resolution_audio_and_standards/ http://www.moultonlabs.com/more/little_bit_more_about_dither_and_bits/
  6. The results at the Computer Audophile Sumposium are not surprising. If what I read is correct, before each was played it was described what was playing and this will provide an inherent bias. Repeat it without this information and results will be very mixed. The human mind is far too a powerful beast to have any results from a group sighted test as valid in my opinion. If you have a group of people experiencing the same ailment, divide them in two and give half a placebo (glucose tablet) and the other half the actual drug that'll solve the problem - almost all generally will report a significant improvement. Does the body actually improve because the mind believes it has consumed the drug? Why then can the body seem to improve as much as when it isn't given the drug? Are you happy because of what you do you enjoy or do you do what you enjoy because it makes you happy? Are you even happy? My tip of the week: GET OFF THE INTERNET AND TRY IT YOURSELF! If you can hear a difference (placebo or not) - live with your decision. Others will agree and others will disagree. There is a path for all. I personally don't think a 0.1% higher CPU utlisation from using NAS vs playing from local disk can make a difference. I can not subjectively tell a difference nor objectively understand how there could be one. For me, there is no difference except the cost of SSD is too high for my music storage. Your milage may vary... Remember that this and other audio sites are funded by advertisers who are selling boutique and exotic products. Apple Mac has more marketing $$$s than 'PC' - therefore Mac will sound better. SSD is more expensive per GB than a typical HDD - therefore SSD will sound better. I am not implying Chris (owner of CA) is misleading music-lovers- but it is easy for us all to be misled by unqualified experts (including me!).
  7. I use a NAS for storage of my music library. The PC music server I use runs a SS disk. On playing a file from the local SS disk vs NAS I can hear no difference in sound quality. I'd like to see a double blind ABX test and see if those that claim a difference can perform better than merely guessing.
  8. Hello all I'm thoroughly confused - I swear I can hear differences between two separate playback applications on my Windows XP based music server. Both programs are using "DirectSound" -> Lynx AES16. Even using "ASIO" the differences remain. There seems to be a distinct difference in clarity of sound and balance between instruments when comparing playback between MediaMonkey and JRiver Media Centre playing the same FLAC files. All EQ / DSP / volume control etc. is off / neutral. I have verified the DAC is receiving the correct sample/bit rate. What could be going on? Is this just placebo or can there be differences? It's difficult to conduct a blind ABX test with two different software programs - does anyone have suggestions on how this could be done?
  9. Thank you for everyones helpful suggestions. I settled on a Brystone BDA-1 and am sucessfully using the pass through and it works brialliantly. Currently setup is now: - PC (XP with JRiver Media Centre) with Lynx AES16 via AES/EBU to BDA-1 - TV/PS3 via Optical Toslink to BDA-1 - Blu-Ray via Coax/SPDIF to BDA-1 - BDA-1 passes through digital signal to digital speakers All working wonderfully... It's a bit of overkill perhaps but the BDA-1will still be sweet should I need it's analogue outs in a modified config.
  10. And a free track can be downloaded from: http://www.tonepearls.com/download-tprcd1.html Chopin Waltz in C sharp minor Op. 64 No. 2 Enough to make up your own mind? I'll be grabbing this later today.
  11. Good day all I own a pair of active digital speakers which accept up to 96khz/24bit word length. However they only have one digital input. They do also accept analogue input but it goes through an additional A>D process to accomodate the DSP. At this stage it is a stereo only setup - but multichannel may come in the future. What I'm seeking to connect to the speakers is: > Music server (Mac OSX most likely) > Blu-Ray Sony BDP9000ES) for DVD/Blu-Ray and occasional stereo from CD > Digital TV (SPDIF coax out) > PS3 (SPDIF coax out or HDMI) I'd like the flexibility of having a DAC in addition to just a way to conveniently connect and switch the digital inputs for future possibilities. What would be the possible ways of solving this? > Music server acts as switcher - Mac OSX with Lynx AES16e could in theory accept the digital inputs and act as the switcher I think - but can this be done via remote? Is it user-friendly? > Meridian G61R Surround Controller - this accepts multiple digital inputs, outputs digital and also will do the DAC. As a bonus it will do the surround decoding in future multi-channel system. Is there any alternatives or other suggestions?
