  1. So, I bought a Cambridge Audio CP1 phono preamp, hooked everything up, AND... it doesn't work It's not the preamp, as it works totally fine when I pipe it through my Yamaha AVR (I use the CD input to bypass the receiver's built in phono stage).
  2. Actually, Jason from NuPrime has been really patient with me and after I received a new unit, I am very happy with it. I could not agree any more that it's the best value for money proposition. It's been working just splendidly. Setting up a music server is my next step.
  3. I poked around and perhaps I just need a phono pre-amp. #noob
  4. Unfortunately, I am back to resurrect this. I purchased a record player, Rega P1. I eagerly plugged its RCA out into the A5 input, instead of where I usually plug in my CD player, but no sound came out. I made sure the input is set to A5 and the volume turned well up. Nothing. Just to make sure it's not the Rega, I plugged it into my Yamaha receiver, and it worked perfectly fine. Plugged the CD RCAs into the A5 and it works fine. The only thing I can think of is that the inputs on the Nuprime are set in too deep, so the RCA plugs from the Rega do not go all the way into the A5 input. Could I be missing something else?
  5. The NuPrime does not have a wired connection (you need to buy a $99 Wireless/wired adapter, but sadly it does not support AirPlay), but it has a B-male USB port. I finally did the ultimate test by downloading FLAC version of the remastered NIN Pretty Hate Machine onto my laptop, and played that through the USB port and it does sound as good as my remastered CD version. So, probably NAS through USB is one way to go. I'll look into Raspberry as well, as I am completely unfamiliar with it. P.S. About my other issue - NuPrime did fix the TosLink input.
  6. Ok, so I moved a few files over to my MacBook and installed Fidelia, connected to the USB port. The sound is marginally better for sure. Next step is to download FLAC of an album I know sounds amazing on CD in my set up (Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine or Nirvana Unplugged or Daft Punk Random Access Memories) and test that. Basically I am trying to figure out what's more worthwhile in my set up - continue buying CDs or get a dedicated music server. More soon.
  7. I would need a very, very long USB cord to find out :-) Though I suppose I can move some files onto a laptop. On a side note, in my BMW, the audio from my phone sounds clearly inferior via BT than USB. Though I would like to stick to my original question, if I may :-)
  8. Thank you for the reply. The files I have now are mostly 44kh (CD Quality?), but some are 192kh. I have wi-fi with AirPlay, but I don't know how to get the NuPrime to support it? Is there a way? This is a temporary solution, as I am considering buying a Mac Mini as a dedicated music server and plugging it into the NuPrime via USB. But if I could somehow get the same quality from my iMac via AirPlay, I'm all ears.
  9. Hi everyone - as stated in the title, a pretty simply question. Any specific one I should buy? I want to stream music from my iMac, but it's in my bedroom and the amp is in my living room, so the reception is a bit spotty. I want to get a BT extender, but just wanted to make sure they don't compromise sound quality. I use the Fidelia app to stream FLAC to Nuprime IDA-8. On Fidelia I set the output to Device Sample Rate - Match Song Converter - Goodhertz Filter Type - Linear Phase Quality - Better Let me also know if you spot any weaknesses in this set up. Thank you!
  10. I am using the RCA connectors, but the amp digitizes that input. I want to make sure I am not misunderstood - the only thing I swapped out was the Yamaha CD changer for the OPPO - everything else in my system stayed the same but my CDs sound duller now. Again, perhaps it's the "right" way, and maybe it works better for jazz or classical, but I don't like it.
  11. Hi all, I know this is a primarily audio streaming forum, but looks like you guys are quite knowledgable and passionate about music overall. Quick story - I gradually upgraded my audio/video system last year. The last upgrade was the OPPO BDP-103, and the aim was to replace two boxes (BD/DVD Player + CD changer) with one. I read all the rave reviews about the OPPO's CD playback capabilities. I installed it expecting a nice sound improvement over my 15-year old Yamaha CD changer. Well, guess what - I don't like it! I know it's supposed to sound "neutral" and Yamahas are knows for sounding "bright," so I guess I like the "bright" sound better, where I can hear the minutia of the high notes, such as the high hats of the drums and those tiny sounds at the end of the acoustic guitar chords (think Nirvana Unplugged). I listen to mostly rock and industrial music, some electro (trip hop, etc.), so I guess that's why I like the bright highs. I will leave the OPPO to play other media, but now on the hunt for a good CD transport with the "bright" sound under $1k. Or perhaps I've got the nomenclature wrong and I am looking for something else? Rest of audio set up - Focal Aria 926 front towers and Nuprime Audio IDA-8 A+D amp. My go to testing album is the remastered Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails. All leads appreciated - TIA!
  12. Coming back to this thread. After multiple careful listening sessions, nothing sounds as good as it did before I sent the unit to be fixed to link up with my old ATV - not CDs nor MP3s from my iPhone via BT. The highs are not as crisp, the bass is less punchy, the overall sound is more muddled and the sound stage smaller. I talked to NuPrime and they refuse to do any further fixes or replace the unit. It's a shame. The funny thing is they are now saying that they did not change the DAC, even though they originally said they did. I am waiting for further reply, but here is the original support ticket. You have a new message from Jason Lim. Re: TosLink Input Not Working Message: We have received the amp and here's the problem (there is still a solution we can try) - we can only change the impedance of the coaxial input and not the optical inputs (the engineer didn't tell me this until we asked for parts). So he suggested that we replace the DAC board on IDA-8 just to give it a try hoping that it will work with the noisy Apple TV. Apparently we are not the only one with connection issue with Apple TV or Airport Express. Airport Express optical digital output | Naim Audio Forums Audiolab M DAC and Airport Express problems https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1837487 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6853159https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4276807 https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4104819?start=60&tstart=0 https://discussions.apple.com/message/20314917#20314917 Actually it is the Apple TV that should be replaced with luck that you get a new one that has less jitter. We have tested some Airport Express that work and others that don't. Regardless, we are getting a replacement DAC board as spare parts just in case you want to give it a try - i.e. wait another week for us to replace the board. There is no guarantee that it will work. Have you tried Apple TV with all the optical inputs of IDA-8? You have a new message from Jason Lim. Re: TosLink Input Not Working Message: I found a better way: We can update the coaxial input with different impedance to handle more jitters and then you can purchase this Optical to Digital converter to work with the Apple TV: http://www.amazon.com/C2G-40019-Optical-Coaxial-Converter/dp/B0002GV876/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1454276102&sr=8-3&keywords=optical+to+coaxial+converter What do you think? We can still replace the DAC board anyway so if the digital input works with Apple TV, you can return the converter to Amazon. It is a pretty cheap and good gadget to have around anyway. Let's replace the DAC board and update the coaxial input. I will try the optical input first. I worry whether the converter from digital to coaxial will compromise sound quality. Thank you, Eugene
  13. Appreciate the cuntiness, but all good :-) Sorry for the delayed reply, all - finally tried streaming Syro by Aphex Twin FLAC from Fidelia via Apple TV connected by an optical cable to the Supreme with disappointing results. And you know THAT recording is top quality. The same album sounds better streaming AAC from my iPhone via the Nuprime's BlueTooth adapter. All in all, I still think for $1k it's a brilliant machine, but not quite perfect. Perhaps it's time to rebuild my CD collection :-)
  14. Well, I finally got the amp back with the new DAC board and now I can stream audio from computer to my ATV to the NuPrime through optical audio. Can't say I am impressed with the quality (streaming FLAC from Fidelia), but I am not sure it's the amp's fault, as there are so many moving parts now (also, I only tried a New Order album, and those are not the best records to test sound quality). Will play around more and report. The audio via BlueTooth from my iPhone sounds great.
