  1. Just a heads up for forum members. Minimserver is moving to a two tiered subscription model as of late October this year. A basic (free) package with Minimserver and a enhanced package (yearly subscription) with Minimserver (more features) and Minimstreamer. Minimserver/Minimstreamer has served me well for the past few years wherein I was able to use the remarkable streaming abilities of Minimstreamer to transcode on the fly (dsd included) and to enable internet radio m3u playlist streaming. Minimstreamer will expire as of late October and to reinstall will require the enhanced package. I have found limited success with respect to internet radio m3u playlist streaming using Linn Kazoo Server. Streams show up in Mconnect Lite and Droidupnp controllers but ironically are absent in Linn Kazoo (used as an Openhome controller). rmel66.
  2. Fantastic article. Just informing fellow readers that the best value proposition (in my opinion) is the use of x86 thin clients, whether NOS (new old stock) or used. Most allow for the use of Linux ( I use Lubuntu 12.04) and Foobar2000 with the UPnP component works extremely well as a renderer under WINE. Thin clients can be had for as little as $30 CAD. Those choosing to remain fully Linux can choose between gmediarender and MPD (or Mopidy)/Upmpdcli combination. Happy addendum. Tried to use vst addons successfully with FB2K under WINE. Just add Foo_vst to the components folder on the WINE c drive and it should find any other vst addons placed in the components folder. Rmel66.
  3. Foobar2000 with upnp component shows up as gapless when openhome renderer created in BubbleUPnP server; so does gmediarender (linux). On the other hand chromecast devices do not show up as gapless and the other portable renderers (Audiocast M5, ggmm portable speakers) also do not show up as gapless, if at all. Just my two cents worth. Rmel66.
  4. Foobar2000 (Linux, wine) with the upnp component for two of my thin client streamers. In my estimation the cheapest way to build DLNA/Openhome streamers (thin clients can be obtained for as low as $20 CAD). rmel66.
  5. The question to ask is if the DDP-2 is a upnp player or renderer. If the latter is true then the DDP-2 could be configured as an Open Home renderer using the BubbleUPnP server application/program. This is the method I employ for my four (4) upnp renderers with the BubbleUPnP server app running on an android set top box (Wetek Play 2) and Linn Kazoo as the control point on a cheap android phone. rmel66.
  6. Good news. I have one of those boxes that I took out of video/KODI circulation because it was getting long in the tooth (720P video lagging audio etc). On a whim, I did some checking and found a linux version ported to the MXQ S85. I wrote this to a microsd card and after updating the box was able to boot into linux from the card. Once logged in I tried to use the MPD/upmpdcli combination for DLNA rendering, but could not effect volume control from my control point. Suffice to say this attempt was abandoned and gmediarender was installed (with all dependencies) and now works almost flawlessly (slight hum from toslink converter). rmel66.
  7. One of my renderers is an atom mini-pc (x8300) and did give a bit of hassle in finding a Linux flavour that would boot from thumb drive. The more important point is that the Wine method I have described only works with X86/X64 aka AMD, Intel processors but I am in full agreement with you in the flexibility of X86/X64 chips with respect to Linux. rmel66.
  8. I have indeed looked at upmpdcli with MPD. I believe I had tried it with one of my Linux boxes but could not get internet radio streams to work. Additionally, I was getting garble with higher resolution streams and uninstalled it. The Wine layer is not a bother for me and this method has proven most reliable for me. One small issue I have is the inability to get streaming to work over wifi. One of my renderers is successfully connected to wifi (internet, network shares etc) but just will not show up as a renderer with wifi. Additionally, if both ethernet and wifi are enabled then same problem. To get the renderer to show up I have to disable wifi and sometimes restart Foobar2000. Any ideas on how to solve this? rmel66.
  9. I recycle old thin clients. I write a persistent version of Linux (Lubuntu, Linux Mint) to thumb drives and boot the clients from these thumb drives, and then after updating the repositories (necessary with old Linux versions) I install Wine, then Foobar2000 and finally the FooUPnP component. This method has worked consistently for me. The real beauty is that old thin clients can be obtained for as little as $20. Additionally I have two Chromecast Audio dongles ($45) that I use in conjunction with BubbleUPnP server to create OpenHome renderers. These work fine with networked files (MinimServer, Minimstreamer) but falter with radio streams. I must add that all renderers are connected via OpenHome with Linn Kazoo as the control point.
  10. As far as I know it is not possible to roll addins together. That being said, FB2K is extremely flexible where addins/addons are concerned, even allowing for VST effects. I use several of these in my W7 FB2K instance. rmel66.
  11. Correction. The W7 pc is the server. Network share not necessary. rmel66.
  12. I do DSD but transcoded to 88.2Khz PCM. This is to ensure compatibility with all streamers. FFMPEG coupled with Minimstreamer is fantastic in what it can do. If I want to listen to DSD natively I do so via a simple network share on my W7 pc.
  13. FB2K. I have created four DLNA renderers using FB2K and the UPnP component. One is a native Windows device and the other three (Asus EEEpc 2g surf, Dell Fx160 thin client and Cenovo mini pc) are running various Linux versions in persistent mode on sdcard/thumb drives with WINE. I also have two Chromecast audio devices and an Audiocast M5 (chromecast lookalike). Everything is tied together with Minimserver (with minimstreamer enabled and transcoding performed by FFMPEG), BubbleUPnP server (to create Openhome renderers) and Linn Kazoo on a dedicated smartphone as the controller. The FB2K devices perform flawlessly in this setup and play everything thrown at them including internet radio streams (incorporated in several M3u files separated by genre). The chromecast devices will play all static files served up by Minimserver but balk at the internet streams; some will play, while others will not. The Audiocast M5 has DLNA built in, and plays all formats just fine, but volume control with Linn Kazoo is non-existent. I have to use the companion app to effect volume control. rmel66.
  14. You could install TightVNC server on the computer to be controlled, and TightVNC client on the controlling computer. I use this method to remotely control computers running FB2K. There is also an android VNC client app (Remote Ripple - look for the free version online as the playstore only has the paid version) that I use on my tablet and phone. Android app works even better if you use a mouse with an OTG adapter. rmel66.
  15. I have resolved to using the chromecast device with LMS/Whitebear as this combo is proving more stable. Thanks for all the advice and happy 2018 to all. rmel66.
