Hi, will one unit alone reproduce mono (...), or just "compact" stereo (i.e. both channel outputs close together)? Why the need for two? Reviews are unclear to me on this point.

Hi Pelo911, try the NAD D3020 with Dynaudio bookshelves plus sub woofer (it has a line out) or Monitor Audio Silver 6 tower speakers. That is my setup and works great on higher volume settings. Haven't tried the new NuPrime Ida-8, they speak wonders about it too. They both have bluetooth so you can stream whatever you want to them, or also connect with USB, optic, coax or analogue.
