  1. It is a misconception that stereo means (in audio also) 2 channel. It describes the spacial aspect. Stereo sound (meaning spatial sound) can be achieved from 2 sources to many more..... One of the main aspects of sound qualitiy, namely tonal accuracy, is vastly improved by surround set ups with more than 2 loudspeakers, if the recorded material is made with the playback situation in mind. After more than 40 years in audio and music recording it is clear to me that even among people who enjoy music listening also for the sound aspect of it, they are mostly unaware what is possible and not really trying to achieve it.
  2. This recording was done by my colleagues and me in the Dresden Kultur Palast, and we used a set up that we also use for our classical recordings (there). Our experiences with recording and mixing to atmos 7.1.4 are very positive indeed and make us enthousisatic about the "added" quality we can achieve. Almost like when we were part to push SACD (with Philips) to encorporate surround. The 5.1 after 24 years is finally joined by a commercial distribution format that can be accessed widely by the listneners. We have a lot of recordings made in this format that are not released by our clients (labels) (yet). So general awareness still needs to grow. Trying to achieve a more realistic impression of a recorded ensemble in a real acoustic via loudspeakers is potentially a real step further than before atmos and auro 3d.
  3. Maybe the same in functionality as the 501, but big difference is that the analog outputs mute when you plug in a headphone. At least with the UD501 there is a setting to by pass this mode and then it is possible to have signals on analog outputs as well headphones. I presume in the 503 it has to with how the volume control is organised, something the 501 does not have for the analog outputs, only hp.

On my B&W 804 it sounds marvellous and the interval is going shortly to finish. Looking really forward to hear Tchaikovsky sym 6 "Pathetique". This same programme will be played on tour by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Japan in couple of weeks and will also be streamed by Primeseat. Very interesting to also listen to and discover the differences in playing and venue. Only 2 microphones are used and the sound is clear, with great depth and resolution. It sounds very natural and beautiful.
