  1. @PepsiCan - You may be right in the sense that I'm doing a lot of nervous handwringing, but some of the thing holding me back are practical. The largest concern that's keeping me from signing on Roon's dotted line is their long-term viability. If I sink $500 into this, will Roon be around for 4-5 years? Also - I'm not 100% sure it will work on my somewhat antiquated Mac Mini. It runs Yosemite, but it just barely meets the minimum requirements. The long and short of it is, I'll probably hold off until Christmas time. What's magic about that time of the year? Nothing - but it gives me enough time to figure out if I'm going to **** or get off the pot. Thank you everyone for your input...
  2. I've looked at J River a few times. I don't think it's as intuitive as it needs to be for my wife to enjoy using it. Sonos, on the other hand looks like something she would use. I'm so torn! Room looks like something that would really help me find new music - a major goal of mine. But you've got to pay for that functionality. I'm stuck - at least for the moment...
  3. @Jud - Thanks for the quick response... Wow - this Roon looks fairly close to what I'm looking for. The only pain point of course, is the price. Don't get me wrong - I'm willing to pay for quality (hence the Tidal subscription), but the $449 lifetime subscription (the only way I'd do it) is a bit tough to sign up for. Especially since I'm reluctant to pay ~$300 for Sonos. Roon does look like a darn good product though. I'm a fan of Meridian stuff too. Any other options I should consider? J. River?
  4. I’m a newb to the site, and despite my best efforts with the forum’s search function, I haven’t found a clear answer to this question. If it exists in a FAQ somewhere, please forgive me. I need help - I’m trying to put together a simple “music appliance” that my wife can feel comfortable using without me. I’ve got an old Mac Mini (2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 120GB SSD) and a gen 4 iPad that I can dedicate to this task. The Mac Mini is connected to my home’s HT system via an external DAC. All the music files we have are stored on an external USB drive connected to the Mini. What I’m trying to put together is a system that will allow my wife to simply pick up the iPad, find whatever she wants to listen to, and press play. That means the ability to listen to: - an iTunes song stored on the Mini, - a station on Pandora, or - a stream from Tidal or Spotify (we use both). All by simply selecting it from an iPad menu. Selfishly speaking, I would also like to use this system to play Hi-Res Audio (FLAC, ALAC) and DSD files in the same manner. The critical piece here is all this needs to be done within the SAME APP. I’ve tried explaining to my wife that she can use the Remote app to listen to iTunes, and use the Tidal or Pandora app to steam directly from the iPad, but it’s too involved for her to want to use regularly. Honestly - it’s kind of a pain for me too. She is good with a Harmony remote, though. Is there software out there that will allow this simple, brain-dead, pick-up-an-iPad-and-press-play operation? I think a Sonos system would accomplish this, but it seems like I’d be paying $300 more dollars to do something that I should be able to do with what I already have. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated...
