  1. I should have been more thorough : As Bimby is plugged, windows has access to the chip's firmware (under USB 1.0?). This one reads "Schiit USB (LOL) Audio Gen 2". Nothing has been installed at this point. First install to be performed (automatic or forced : right click "Schiit USB Audio Gen 2" / 'update drivers' then 'search automatically') should add you a "USB composite device" under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Then the 'real' install can take place. I've used my micro iDSD with a 16ft cable + a 4ft extension, both low quality (no more than 10€ for both combined) without a problem. That can't be the problem install-wise. Sound wise, it could. (but a Regen or Wyrd at the input of Bimby should remedy that if needed)
  2. I've encountered some problems too... (same ones under XP and 7) What worked for me : Let windows search for and install a driver : this way the Bimby should be recognized as a USB composite device. After that the C-media/Schiit installer sees the USB chip inside Bimby. Good luck!
  3. I'd be shocked if a USB chip couldn't be accessed by a computer because of a 5m cable, even if said cable was of poor quality. (we're not talking audio performance here but basic digital communication...)
  4. Nope, never been a fan of upsampling I might say... (only ever tried with foobar)
  5. Took me too long to edit (got lost in music for 1 1/2 hour, searching for illustrating tracks ), so here it is : space (Meira Asher - Vio Smear), instruments/sounds placement (Lucretia Dalt - Esplendor) and bass rendering (The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - Patra (Saint Vitus cover)) Battery sounds in particular... really nice. (The Desert Sessions - A#1, various rock and metal bands \m/ )
  6. Bimby (day 5) and Micro (14 months) here... Using speakers, expectation bias aside (well, trying to), and comparing the comparable (micro in direct mode (=> no 3D and/or Xbass)), space, instruments/sounds placement and bass rendering are the biggest differences for me in favor of Bimby.
  7. Their website's product page only has REgenerate® Only on the Head-Fi thread appears REgen®... just a typo I'd guess
  8. Yup! I'll do comparisons when (and if) I succeed. At first sight, 20dB attenuation is not the same thing between the two OS, using the same piece of software (Winamp 2.91), everything else being equal, 7 seems (is) much louder
  9. Well... deleting the usb device in the device manager didn't work... Still gonna try and deinstall all usb then reboot. Meanwhile I've installed Win7 and, even though there are some differences here and there with some audio utilities and software, the combo Regen+idsd micro is working like a charm. Tried it with a Project Ember and AKG K712 at first and sensed some benefits but a few hours later, on the speakers the difference between before/without and with Regen is clear! Don't know how to express it except that the sound seems much cleaner and fluid. I was waiting for soundstage improvement and it looks like it's happening but the limiting factor in my case I guess are the speakers (old Altec Lansing (THX certified! ) 2.1 system). They'll be replaced very soon now! Many thanks to all of you who tried to help and/or got in a semi-heated argument over microsoft technicalities
  10. Using XP but the motherboard and PSU are only 2 years old, running a Core i7... only the OS is old. I'm gonna try BobSherman's advice re. deleting the device before reboot
  11. Thanks for the reply! I've tried it all unfortunately... every time, the last step gets the windows 'system' process running at full speed on one processor but no access to the idsd. Tried letting it run like this for 15 minutes then decided it was more than enough
  12. Hello guys, New here and new to the Regen (received it today) I got a small problem, computer won't recognize the association Regen + iFi idsd micro So the question is : Is there any idsd user here that is running this combo on Win XP (sp3)? (tried it on Win 7 on another computer and it works, but if I could stay with good old and trusty XP, I'd be delighted!) (looking now for an image of 7 to install in dual-boot ) Thanks!
