  1. You're correct about the price on the KLH model 5s, my mistake. In place of the KLH Model 5s, I would substitute a pair of used Zu Omen Dirty Weekends. They can be found frequently on the used market for $1200 a pair.
  2. Here is an option for a sub $2.5k system that I think has some great potential. KLH Model 5 speakers - $1250 BluSound Node 2i - $599 IOTAVX SA3 Integrated Amp - $547 TOTAL - $2396
  3. Due to a leaking pressure valve at my water meter, my basement which is my main 2-channel listening room is in the middle of a remodel and repair. My equipment was far enough away from the plumbing that no damage occurred to my equipment, thank god. But I am having the padding and carpet replaced in the entire room. My basement is solid slab concrete construction. Has anyone experienced a change in sound and system synergy after having carpet replaced in your listening room? Or maybe I'm thinking about this too much? The fact I can't just sit and listen to music has me wondering to this topic, among others regarding my system, while I wait for my room to be finished and I can set my system up again and get back to listening.
  4. I have to caveat my comment by saying that I have yet to audition a tube DAC in my system, but my current system is very similar to what you're proposing in your second system option so I can speak to that part of your question. I currently have a Chord Qutest into a Linear Tube Audio Microzotle MZ2 into a FirstWatt Aleph J power amp and Klipsch RP-600M speakers. I have never been happier with my system at this point. and I find the palpability and imaging to be pretty fantastic.
  5. I have been an audiophile for a number of years but I have just completed the first frequency response recordings for my current main 2 channel system. I have very little knowledge of how to read or analyze these frequency response curves so any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated. I do stream Roon to this system so I do think I will take the next steps and generate DSP convolution filters in Roon but figured getting some thoughts and input on my system's raw frequency response curves would be beneficial as well. Recording were done using a miniDSP UMIK-1 usb mic with the REW software and utilizing a moving microphone method to record across the central single listening position. My system is as follows as well: Roon ROCK NUC to wired cat5 BlueSound Node 2i Chord 2Qute Linear Tube Audio Mocrozotl MZ2 First Watt Aleph J clone DIY Klipsch RP-600M I would love to hear any thoughts or feedback you might have. LEFT CHANNEL RIGHT CHANNEL
  6. I think the Node 2i would be a great place to make your next upgrade. Getting the Onkyo out of the chain and running the Node 2i into your Yamaha would be a nice improvement.
  7. My current system is streaming via Roon Rock - BlueSound Node 2i utilizing the internal dac - ModWright MWI SWL 9.0 AE pre amp - First Watt Aleph J clone power amp - Klipsch RP-600M bookshelf speakers. Im thinking of making an upgrade and my first instinct was to add an external DAC on the back end of the Node 2i, the Chord Qutest intrigues me. But I stumbled across the idea of implementing Dirac Live via a miniDSP DDRC-24. Now I'm thinking that implementing the Dirac Live room correction into my system would realize greater sonic improvement and listening enjoyment, and at a far less price tag. I cant rationalize both components right now, so its an either or scenario for me. Am I wrong thinking the room correction is the way to go right now?
  8. So I have been working through my CD collection to rip my collection to FLAC for my new streaming setup running Roon ROCK and and NAS. I am using dbpoweramp so I can see when the software needs to re-rip a track because of issues. My question is, is there a way to identify the quality of a track rip after I have closed out a specific rip report and moved on to other discs? I had a handful of issues like this but I did not think to document or keep notes on which tracks came up with the red X warning in dbpoweramp. These tracks still ripped though. Is there a way to identify suspect tracks after the fact?
  9. My work and home life has changed very little, the biggest change being working from home instead of going into the office but I have an office in the house so its not like Im working from the kitchen table or anything. My social lifestyle has changed significantly however. I am a Pittsburgh Penguins season ticket holder and I also run/play on two rec hockey teams, so from those aspects my life has changed significantly. Luckily I have a couple of hobbies in addition to being an audiophile to keep me occupied and those would be woodworking and collecting vintage baseball cards and memorabilia.
  10. I appreciate all the replies, thank you. A detail I forgot to include in my OP is that the couches and entertainment center/TV are setup in this fashion because the room has a ceiling mounted 5 speaker surround system oriented in this direction. I suppose I could still flip everything around and simply use a stand alone center channel along with the ceiling surround sound speakers. That might be an option. The WAF (wife acceptance factor) is playing heavily into my decisions here. CJF, I do not have the rest of the room available to me, a corner fireplace, the wife's sewing desk the mud entrance are over on that side of the room. If I had options over there then I would have utilized those options instead of this conundrum I find myself in now. Summit, I'm aware of the back wall influences on the listening position and those are factors I will address regardless. I have some shallow shelving to install behind the couch as well as some artwork to help diffuse those deflections. Moving the couch out from the wall is not really ideal, they dont lend themselves to being easily moved. thanks again for the comments, I think I just need to decide on speakers and get them in place and go from there.
  11. Thanks for the thoughts. The wall the entertainment center is on now is where my cable tv wall plate is located. I would have to run cable cord over to the couch wall if I wanted to flip the layout, and this room has 5 in-ceiling speakers for built in surround sound that are oriented for the current layout. My Hope was with the speakers in position B that the I would eliminate the early reflection of the mids and highs and that I could put some bass absorbers in the corner position to address the base reflections. But from your comments it seems that corner is going to give me more trouble than what I assumed using position B.
  12. I know these speaker placement questions get asked frequently, and maybe too much so for some, but Im looking to get back into the hobby after I sold my last system when I sold my old house and bought my new one. I am going to be going with a 2 channel system with stand mounted bookshelf speakers but I'm locked into where I'm permitted to have my 2 channel system. The geometry of my room though is giving me fits trying to think about how to best place the speakers and if I will need any room treatments or corrections to help as well. Maybe this is an easy and straight forward answer but knowing ahead of time and getting some opinions will aid in my speaker and stand decision I think. Here is the layout of my room. Will I have issues if I place my speakers at position A? Or might most speakers probably benefit from moving them out to position B? Is this an case where digital room correction might really benefit me?
  13. The recent thread discussing the costs of photography equipment, and some posts about cycling as a hobby, got me to thinking about hobbies that board members here have beyond being audiophiles. As for myself, I am a part-time/hobby woodworker. The majority of my projects are for myself or friend and family. I do accept commissions all as a result of word-of-mouth referrals, but I do not make much money on any of them and it usually serves to supplement my woodworking hobby further as more often than not any profits I make with a project get turned right back into tools or upgrades to the shop. A few examples of my work are attached here for your viewing enjoyment. Close to 95% of my work is all done with traditional hand tools. The 4th picture is of my work bench as I was in the middle of flattening a white oak panel for my last project. Only about 5% of the work on a particular project is done with power tools, and usually just my 14" bandsaw for breaking down rough stock and my 16" planer.
  14. My current system consists of a MacBook Pro controlling a Raspberry Pi 2 running Rune Audio that pulls music from an NAS and sends the signal to my Schiit Bifrost. I am currently in my free trial period for Roon and I connect my MBP directly to the Bifrost via USB when I want to use Roon but its not ideal so I want to fully implement Roon into my system but I'm debating which of these two options would be the better implementation. Option 1 Run Roon through an HQ Player/NAA implementation utilizing my Raspberry Pi 2. Option 2 Install RoonServer on a headless Mac Mini to replace the Raspberry Pi 2. Cost is a determining factor in my decision which is why purchasing a RoonReady device at this point in time is not feasible for me. I thought about trying both options out for a period of time and making a decision then, but I really do not want to waste money on purchasing a license for HQ Player only to decide I prefer the Mac Mini option, and the same goes for dropping money on a Mac Mini that I would have to try to resell should I prefer the first option above. Any thoughts on these two options or perhaps there is another comparably priced option available that I am over looking?
