  1. Yes I have tried upsampling to DSD in the past using HQplayer and an iFi iDSD DAC. Didn't like the analytical sound. I am using a NOS DAC now and really enjoy the natural sound of it. If you want to try the i7 be sure to pick one with a low TDP like the i7-6700T. This will avoid that you'll have to use a fan in your Streacom FC5.
  2. The i3 has more than enough processing power. I think the i3 will only be a problem when you want to upsample to DSD quality. I have disabled 2 of the 4 cores of my i5 and clocked down the clock speed as much as possible. In my setup this leads to a better soundstage, less noise and lower power needs.
  3. For me, one the key features of Snakeoil is that is makes running the OS from RAM so easy. I also assume that is one of the reasons why it sounds so good compared with for example Vortexbox which was installed on my HD. Will installing Snakeoil to another USB stick still give me the opportunity running the OS totally from RAM without the USB stick plugged in?
  4. I have planned to do a SATA cable shoot-out in the near future. So I can't give a good advise at this moment. I've tried a couple of different (cheap) cables in the past and they all sounded very different.
  5. Yes, SATA cables are very important. Regardless whether your SSD is externally powered or not. However that doesn't mean that expensive ones like JCat etc are always better.
  6. I tried running Snakeoil software as I wanted to experiment with Linux environments on my audio system (after using Win10/Fidelizer/ProcessLasso/JRiver). Snakeoil really surprised me by the sound quality it offers! In my set-up it definitely beats other Linux based solutions I tried so far like the latest versions of Vortexbox 2.4 and Daphile. Although the software is intended to be used on Atom based processors it also worked on my i5 processor out of the box without any problem. Eazy peazy to mount my NAS where my music is stored as well. The provided on-line manual is clear what settings should be used. Personally I think this software really deserves a better name. I can advise everybody to give it a try. As it can be run in Live mode using an USB stick it’s without any risk. (especially if you decouple you existing hard-disk first like I did) One of the features I would like to have most is some kind of configuration file containing the basic settings like IP-address, mounts etc. that can be loaded in the Live environment so I don’t have to go through this set-up every time.
  7. Nice photo's Øystein! Quite an interesting project you have started here. Very curious how this solution will perform compared to a 'traditional' PC based streamer set-up. It doesn't need noisy SSD/HD's and fans and also the power requirements are relatively low. Besides that, you don't have to invest in a separate USB card and expensive USB cables. :-) Keep us posted!
  8. Very interesting threat!!! :-) Can we expect the same kind of 'quantum leap in SQ' if the SSD in our streamer is already powered by a separate low ripple power regulator and playing the audio files directly from RAM using JRiver?
  9. Hi Alex, Thanks for the link! I guess we only need the +Vin part of that board for our purpose? Why is this 'JLH Add-on Shunt Regulator' so much better than the 40mV regulator Tboooe and I are using? Doesn't this board require a heat sink?
  10. Correct that's why I ordered a regulator on Amazon. The same one as tboooe is using. Your super regulator might even be a lot better. Only problem is that I will probably have to create my own PCB right? I have no experience with that and also missing the tools. Is it possible to order some kind of a kit online?
  11. Hi Tboooe, do you have a spare battery available? Maybe it's wise to try to run it from that as well so that you have some kind of a good reference point? In my case running the SSD from battery was clearly a big improvement in a sense that the music sounded more 'analog' and realistic.

  14. Simply buying a commercial streamer in a store will save you a lot of effort and time! :-) However building one yourself gives you the opportunity to gain a very good knowledge and experience in computer audio technology and will save you a lot of money.
