  1. Very sad news. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Gilbert’s articles and discovering new (old) music through them. Thankyou for publishing them Chris.
  2. This is the kind of advance we needed in audio. I await developments with interest.
  3. Sonore - microRendu says DSD 512 and either DoP or native DSD. The kit I am considering is at Mshow DSC1 DAC decoder DSD SMD KIT DIY Compatible with Amanero and our XMOS usb
  4. Hi all, Am thinking of building (oh alright, having my Chinese supplier build) the DSC1 in order to try out 512 DSD. Has anyone built it and fed it from an mR NAA ?
  5. Thanks Gilbert, I've been a lifelong fan of The Captain Matchbox Whoopie Band in Australia. This article exposes their influences. Time to get listening !
  6. Very interesting DAC and reports. I've been counting up what I could sell in order to justify acquiring one. It seems as if a good tweaked PC and a direct USB connection to the DAC is currently needed to realise the potential benefits. I think I will wait for mR compatibility and see if that displaces (or lowers) the need for a fully tweaked computer. If so then this is the kind of kit I was thinking of: Gigabyte BRIX Gaming UHD Mini-PC Review | KitGuru - Part 19 The GTX 950 is CUDA capable and would reduce the workload on the CPU. It isn't silent so it would sit in another room, run Roon Server and HQP and connect by Ethernet to the router and then the mR.
  7. Thanks for keeping interest in this end of the market alive Chris. It opens the door for young hobbyists and keeps manufacturers honest.
  8. This was the response I received to an enquiry to the Auralic distributor in Melbourne, Australia: I am at a loss to understand why the unit must be returned to China to perform a firmware upgrade and why even that process cannot be started for a "few months".
  9. Hi Miska, Very exciting to see the integration of HQP with Roon approaching release. I think it will be hugely synergistic for both products. I was most impressed with HQP SQ when I used the Windows trial. Only reason I haven't purchased is because I intend to run it on the same machine as the Roon Core, and that will eventually be their Linux RoonServer, so I am waiting for that to be released. At the moment I understand the planned integration will see HQP handling the output distribution, which is the simplest way to do it and a logical first step. Eventually, however, I would hope to be able to control all zones in the house using Roon and be able to send an HQP processed stream to any RoonReady or RoonSpeaker device. The Roon folk tell me that in order to do that they would need to have access to a version of HQP which exposes control surfaces but leaves I/O up to Roon. I think of this as HQP operating as a DSP module that can be implemented in an FX loop way. I suspect that there are other applications also that would be very pleased to integrate with HQP as a DSP module while controlling I/O themselves. So as a feature request I would like to ask for a "DSP module" version of HQP. I think HQP now has a sufficient reputation that it could open up a whole new market.
  10. It looks like Roon's integration with HQP is going to leave audio distribution to HQP (at least at first). That makes the Aries as an NAA very interesting.
  11. Just a heads up for everyone here at CA. Last week Roon released it's much awaited Software Developer Kit to a first batch of undisclosed hardware manufacturers. We should start seeing firmware to make network devices RoonReady in a month or two. I'm going to make a wild guess that Auralic will be among that group.

Edit: Squeezebox support is coming (probably before Christmas) but in the hunt for the cheapest cutest network zone device this one (running Android) is going to take some beating: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/android-remix-as-a-roon-endpoint/5108
  13. Hi Richard, I'd love to try Amarra with Roon, but I think it's still OSX only ? Have you heard of any plans that you can tell us about as regards Armarra Windows or Linux ?
  14. I found HQPlayer upsampling to be clearly better than Roon. Why am I using Roon and not HQPlayer ? Only someone who hasn't used both could ask that question ! The upcoming HQPlayer/Roon integration is one of the most highly supported Feature Requests on the Roon forum, exceeded only by iPad support I think. I thought Shinyc said it best "HQPlayer deserves Roon front end and vice versa".
  15. Something something Luis Borges ... But as regards up sampling, I preferred HQPlayer up sampling to 192k to the Vega alone, but suspect the Vega was still up sampling internally. I don't know why the filters in HQPlayer make a difference if it's all still filtered in the Vega, but I think they do.
