I would suggest getting something that measures well. Here is a site that shows measurements of audio great, including DACs: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/master-index-for-audio-hardware-reviews.2079/ If you don’t mind gear from China, the Topping D50 received very good marks: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-topping-d50-dac.2403/ It does DSD, and was selling on MassDrop for $199: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/topping-d50-dac Most audio chips in regular PC computers do not support native DSD. So the software converts your DSD file into PCM and then plays it on your PC. The signal from your DAC must be fed into an amplifier, then to your speakers.

Recommendation for $<800 DAC with remote

Here is a handy list of DACs. Many are under $800: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/master-index-for-audio-hardware-reviews.2079/#post-114509 -
Schiit Yggdrasil Vs PS Audio Directstream Junior
duxservit replied to Roy724's topic in DAC - Digital to Analog Conversion
Subjectively, there is no comparison between DirectStream Snr and Yggdrasil. The DS Snr is a great DAC, and each firmware upgrade pushes the envelope a bit more. If you don’t like a particular upgrade, you can re-install the previous version. But, a new DS Snr is about 3x the price of the Yggdrasil. On the plus side, there are lots of used DS Snr in excellent condition for up to half-price. It’s a well-engineered DAC done by a very knowledgeable engineer (Ted Smith). FYI here are some measurements of the Yggdrasil: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-schiit-yggdrasil-v2-dac.3607/ -
Let me try giving a more serious (partial) answer: (a) The market in the US has become small, for the type of gear you are talking about. (b) Mobile devices (i.e. mobile phones) are the main consumer platform. (c) Demographics and population high mobility (i.e. if you move a lot, less need of large audio gear). (d) Expansion of engineering disciplines. The last one (e) is just my theory. A freshman college engineering student today in the US has a broad range of choices of subjects/topics across the EE/CS spectrum. A student might find solving the self-driving car problems or the Bitcoin/crypto-currency mining problems more rewarding/cool/job-promising than solving a 50-year problem of better audio gear.

A proposal: the Objectivist Audio Review magazine
duxservit replied to christopher3393's topic in General Forum
Agree. Amir is already making significant contributions to the audiophile world. One way to help is to loan your gear to Amir to measure. -
I also have a large collection of FLACs, ALACs and DSFs. Been using JRiver MC and Audirvana. Started using Roon a year ago. All music files are on an external drive. No no issues with installing Roon core on my main Mac. Roon took a couple of hours to “index” my music, but no glitches. Been running there almost 18 months. I’m now experimenting using an old MacBookPro as the Roon Bridge that connects to my DAC. Works beautifully.

OpenVPN vs. IKEv2?
duxservit replied to classfolkphile's topic in Networking, Networked Audio, and Streaming
This is an apple vs orange comparison of two VPN technologies at different layers of the IP stack. IKE is the cryptographic key establishment protocol (RFC2409) used for IP/IPsec layer (at layer 3, or better “layer 3.5”). OpenVPN is an SSL-layer VPN established above the TCP layer. (RFC5246 for TLS1.2). For home use (short TCP bursts, tear-up, tear-down VPN), I suggest using OpenVPN. If if you want a long-term VPN (e.g. home to office) that’s up 24x7, then you would use an IKE/IPSec VPN. -

How’s about this one: “Your speech offends me, has triggered a biophysiochemical change in my brain, and has thus caused me physical harm... “ (etc, etc, blah, blah, blah). ? Kidding aside, for you lawyers, would this hold up in court? -
The PS Audio DS does not need any “cleaning” devices for its USB input. It’s one of the best engineered DACs out there. It does have a $6K price tag for a new one. You maybe interested in this ASR measurements of the ISO: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/uptone-iso-regen-review-and-measurements.1829/ For me the moral of the story is that there is a price-point for DACs, above which “USB cleanliness” is expected.

There was a thread a while back mentioning a vendor selling a power cable for USD$28,000 per meter.
