    Pure Music

I discovered Pure Music Player when someone mentioned it on another forum. Thing is, I don't really know if it will benefit me. I'm trying to figure out what it is and what it does but there's so much written about it here, and pretty technical it is too, that I can't figure it out. Could someone summarise what it is and if it could help me? I have a Mac playing (mostly) ALAC tunes through an Airport Express directly into an Audiolab 8000S amp (no DAC as yet) Thanks oh, I meant to say, if the website is anything to go by, then I won't get my hopes up. It's like something a kid at school would do.

  4. Well, I just tested my AE through the analogue out (playing ALAC files with iTunes on my iMac) Vs my Audiolab 8000 CD player. I couldn't really tell a difference.
  5. Very interesting iamimdoc, very interesting. I've read stuff along the lines of 'bought an AE? Get a DAC' etc etc, but does it really make THAT much of an improvement I've thought to myself. Maybe my ears, and or equipment are not good enough to reveal the differences, subtle as they may be. Thanks
  6. That's interesting, I shall have to do a test. Maybe it depends what gear you have and what software you're playing it through.
  7. Thanks for all your comments. I don't think the analogue output of the AE is all that bad; I use it myself between my Mac and my hifi (see my sig), but I may add a DAC later. Personally, I would go with the A5 speakers over the A2's for their size and extra features, but I haven't heard either. I chatted with my FiL today and he is 'thinking about it'.
  8. Are you saying that adding a DAC to this system is pointless?
  9. Hi, My father in law would like to step into the world of computer audio. He has a laptop, but nothing else and his budget is very small. I've suggested he go with some sort of streaming device, such as the Airport Express and a pair of active speakers. I know little about active speakers at any price range though, but I have read good things about the AudioEngine range. I think for a relatively small outlay of around £3-400 he could get a pretty good system and control it all from his laptop. Any thoughts on the AudioEngine's or any other gear, or even any other method? Thanks
  10. I cannot seem to get the overwrite function to work either. Has anyone had any success with that? My main issue is that I'm re-ripping a load of stuff that I previously ripped with itunes, and some of the tags have been modified. If I re-rip with iTunes the tracks are replaced and the tags remain the same, but XLD will not replace the tracks, so I have to delete the originals and add artwork and fix tags to the newly XLD ripped tracks.
  11. How do I replace previously ripped tracks in iTunes with XLD so that I retain the tags like artwork and such?
  12. I would've thought you could just stick something on repeat with the volume down/off just so the signal is going through. Do that every time you're not actually listening to it.
  13. Connecting a DAC to the Mac is my preferred option but I have recently discovered that the cable length required is over 5m which is the USB limit (I've heard). Can I use USB over 5m's in length using active repeaters? I would really appreciate some opinion on this. Thanks
  14. How long is the cable? I can't find this info anywhere.
